Abstract

This study investigates the economic feasibility and profitability of backyard Deshi chicken rearing in Rangunia Upazila, Chattogram District, Bangladesh. Deshi chickens, being indigenous to Bangladesh, play a significant role in rural livelihoods and contribute to sustainable agriculture practices. The research focuses on assessing the financial aspects of Deshi chicken farming, including income generation, cost analysis, and overall profitability metrics. Data was collected through structured surveys and interviews with local backyard chicken farmers across the upazila. The study faced challenges such as limited time and resources, as well as varying levels of cooperation from farmers, impacting the completeness and accuracy of data. Despite these challenges, the analysis provides valuable insights into the economic dynamics of backyard Deshi chicken rearing in the region. Key findings indicate that Deshi chicken farming can be a viable source of income for rural households, with significant contributions to household food security and nutrition. Factors influencing profitability include feed costs, market prices for chickens and eggs, disease management, and local market demand. The study also explores the socio-economic factors influencing farmer decisions regarding Deshi chicken rearing practices. The findings underscore the importance of supporting and promoting Deshi chicken farming as a sustainable agricultural practice that enhances rural income and livelihoods. Recommendations include improved access to veterinary services, training on improved management practices, and market linkages to enhance profitability and sustainability in Deshi chicken rearing.
