Abstract
Caught up in the midst of turbulent terrain, journalists operating in conflict and crime zones confront multifaceted challenges, where truth-seeking and exposing becomes the first casualty in warfare. Endangering their lives—not only physical injury but also psychological trauma, repression, and ethical dilemmas. This thesis commits to endeavor by taking an interdisciplinary route, blending the art of literature and journalism. The interwoven tapestry of fictional novels, The Quiet American by Graham Greene and Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, with real-life journalistic complexities, this research paper highlights the role of journalists transcending their power of reportage to bring justice. Beckoning trauma theory, media ethics, nonviolent resistance, and postcolonial paradigm—this study aims to plumb the depths by conducting a nuanced understanding of how journalists, in the face of violence and suppression, instead of engaging in defensive reprisals, they respond through creative alternative means as an act of morality and resistance. Thus, this thesis addresses the gap that conventional reporting often lacks flair in comparison to creative journalism, which uses more emotionally-charged narratives, empowering journalists to showcase their defiance in conflict zones. Anchoring the fictional novels with journalistic issues, with a magnifying lens on Gaza and Bangladesh, displays the contemporary concerns that need to be addressed. The double homicide case of the Bangladeshi journalists, Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, is a grim testament of the jeopardous duties performed by journalists. Each standing as a pillar in the infinite storm, leaving behind a legacy of adherence in steadfast pursuit of justice toward a just tomorrow.
