Abstract

Bangladesh's pharmaceutical industry plays a prominent role in nation's domestic demand for medicine, and export-oriented sector. However, because of its energy-intensive operations, this industry presents itself as a prominent source of carbon emissions. The industry's potential for decarbonization has not been fully explored, despite its importance on a national and worldwide scale. The objective of our study was to investigate the current state of decarbonization in Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical industry, evaluate the main factors that influence industries to implement decarbonization practices, and assess the advantages and barriers associated with broader adoption. The study uses a semi-quantitative approach that examines pharmaceutical industries depicting adoption of decarbonization practices, motivations, perceived benefits, and barriers. The results show that targeted policies, technical support, and creative financing strategies are needed. The pharmaceutical industries in Bangladesh can move closer to the country's climate goals while maintaining its industrial and sustainable competitiveness by filling in these gaps.
