Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at the plot of genetics and plant breeding department, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during July to September, 2007 to study variability, heritability, floral biology, correlation, path coefficient analysis and euclidean distance determination provided 30 genotypes of fine rice. The result of the experiment revealed that significant variation obtained only for genotype for the character days to 50% flowering and days to maturity. On the other hand, variation was found for both genotype and environment for the character Sterility (%) and 1000-grain weight. Panicle length (cm) and spikelets per panicle were highly heritable characters. Spikelets per panicle, plant height (cm) were highly environmentally influenced character. On the other hand, Grain length breadth ratio less influenced by the environment. The characters fertile pollen sterile _ pollen, pollen _fertility(%),spikelet fertility(%),period of blooming, starting of anthesis showed significant and positive correlation with grain yield/ha (t). Path coefficient analysis suggested that spikelet fertility(%) and pollen fertility(%) contributed maximum to grain yield having positive direct effect. Selection was effective for the characters viz. plant height, panicle length, 1000-grain weight, fertile pollen, pollen fertility (%), spikelet fertility (%), period of blooming, starting of anthesis to increase the grain yield per hectare. Highest pollen fertility was observed for genotype FR7 (Malshira) followed by FR27 (Shotormota). Highest spikelet fertility was found for genotype FR 30 (Motamota) followed by FR4 (Badshabhog), FR29 (Shitabhog). Varieties seemed to be highly successful rate to outyield were FR4 (Badshabhog), FR29 (Shitabhog), FR23 (Boldar) and FR3 (Zira). The maximum period of blooming of flowers days were noted in FR20 (Darkashail) and FR24 (Lalchicon). FRIO (Ranzid), FR 15 (Neniya) and FR22 (Rajshahisharna) possessed more period of opening of spikelets. Varieties seemed to be easy to improve were FR24 (Lalchicon), FR20 (Darkashail), FR15 (Neniya) and FR10 (Ranzid). Statistically more or less alike varieties were FR12 (Amur) and FR6 (Philippine katari); FR16 (Chinigura) and FR26(Shadamota). The highest yield (3.80t/ha) was obtained in FR23 (Boldar).
