Qualitative Survey on Quail Farmers in Chittagong (Perception, Socio-Economic Status, Requirements, Challenges and Prospects

Abstract
Quail farming is highly recognized and well established all over the world, it is
unfortunately not well recognized in Bangladesh. The qualitative study was
undertaken to get the perceptions, socio-economic status, requirements, Challenges
and prospects of quail farmers in Chittagong, Bangladesh. 15 quail farmers of
Hathazari and Rawzan upazilla of Chittagong were surveyed. Among them 60% quail
farmers were SSC passed, 26.7% were class 8 passed and 13.3% were HSC qualified.
60% farmers started farming 2015-2018 and rest 40% 2010-2014. 73.3% farmers did
not get any support from NGO/GO and 26.7% get support. Within the study 46.6%
farmers mentioned that they require specific feed formulation, 26.7% training and
26.7% veterinary health care. Poor marketing is the main challenge for them, 53.3%
mentioned it, 33.3% higher chick mortality and 13.4% mentioned incubator to hatch
eggs. About 60% farmers made general agreement with the possibility to expand this
farming as agro industry. Low investment requirement, short generation gap per batch
and early marketing are attracting the farmers to go for quail farming. Further study
required to adopt strategy to make quail farming as a profitable one.
