Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a prevalent metabolic disorder among domesticated cats, especially in geriatric populations, and is a leading cause of feline mortality. This case report documents the diagnosis and management of Stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a 4-year-old male cat presented to the Teaching and Training Pet Hospital and Research Centre, Purbachal, Dhaka. The cat exhibited symptoms of anorexia, lethargy, and dehydration, with a history of prior CKD diagnosis. Diagnostic evaluations included hematological and biochemical analysis, which revealed elevated white blood cell counts, increased eosinophil levels, and significantly raised blood urea nitrogen (71 mg/dl) and serum creatinine levels (3.4 mg/dl), confirming CKD progression. Ultrasonography further supported the diagnosis, showing moderately demarcated kidney cortex and medulla. Treatment involved a tailored approach, addressing dehydration with Hartman’s solution, managing inflammation with omega-3 fatty acids, and preventing potential hypokalemia with potassium citrate supplementation. Multivitamins and multimineral supplements were also administered to maintain overall health. The case highlights the challenges of managing recurrent CKD in cats and underscores the importance of early diagnosis and individualized treatment strategies for stabilizing patient conditions and improving clinical outcomes.
