EFFECT OF ARSENIC, NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF RICE

Abstract

A pot experiment was conducted at soil science farm ofSher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from December 2016 to March 2017 to evaluate the effect of arsenic, nitrogen and phosphorus on the growth and yield of rice (BRRI Dhan36). The experiment comprised four arsenic doses 0, 2, 4, 6 ppm with the recommended doses and with 50% more than the recommended doses of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. The treatment combinations were As 1 T 1 = As 1 +N &P recommended dose, As = As 2 +N & P recommended dose, As 3 T 1 =As + N & P recommended dose, As 4 T 1 =As 4 + N & P recommended dose, As 1 3 T 2 = As +50% more N & P than recommended dose, As 2 T 2 = As 2 1 +50% more N & P than recommended dose, As 3 T 2 =As 3 + 50% more N &P than recommended dose, As 4 T 2 =As +50% more N & P than recommended dose. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. In the experiment, increased As showed adverse effect on plant height, effective tillers per plant, non-effective tillers per plant, filled grains per plant, unfilled grains per plant, grains per panicle, 1000-grain weight, grain and straw yield of rice. During harvest, highest plant height (80.30 cm), highest tiller (20), longest panicle (24cm), highest straw yield (28.03 gm) and grain yield (30.13 gm) were recorded in controlled As level. On the contrary, lowest plant height (58.37 cm), lowest tiller (5), shortest panicle (15.33 cm), lowest straw yield (11.7 gm) and grain yield (14.2 gm) were recorded in highest As level (6 ppm). Increased doses of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers may have effect in higher allocation of As in plant parts which reduces the yield of rice with the increased level of As.
