Abstract

The efficacy of piperazine citrate (Avipar®) and levamisole (Neotrax®) against naturally infected ascariasis in indigenous chicken has been studied. A total number of 200 indigenous chickens were surveyed ranging from 2 months to 1 year of age from different villages of the Rowmari thana in Kurigram district. On the Basis of faecal egg count, 30 chickens from positive cases were selected and divided into 3 groups of 10 chickens each. Group A served as the untreated control, whereas groups B and C were treated with piperazine citrate (Avipar®) and levamisole (Neotrax®) respectively. The therapeutic efficacy was evaluated through determination of parasitic prevalence, body weight gain/loss and haematological findings. Fecal samples were examined to observe the incidence of ascariasis in chicken and average infection rate was found 86%. The highest infection rate 90% was found in 60-120 days (2-4 months) of age group. The anthelmintics was significantly increased (p<0.01) the percentage of mean body weight of chicken of groups B and C as 10.42% and 30% respectively on 28 days after treatment. But body weight of the control group A, the percentage of mean body weight was significantly decreased (p<0.01) as 11.36% on 28 th day of experiment. The reductions of mean EPG on 14 th day after treatment were 100% and 100% in the group of chickens of B and C respectively. There was 100% decrease of mean EPG count following administration of drugs. Total erythrocyte count (TEC/cu mm), hemoglobin content (Hb gm %) and packed cell volume (PCV %) were increased significantly (p<0.01 and P<0.05), whereas erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and total leukocyte count (TLC 10 th and 28 th ) were reduced significantly (p<0.05) after treatment with two patent drugs namely Avipar® and Neotrax®. At the end of the trial hematological condition of the all chickens were improved. The administration of recommended doses of two patent drugs namely Avipar® and Neotrax® as anthelmintics suddenly decreased 3 /mm 3 the number of ascaris parasites of indigenous chicken in groups B and C respectively. The highest reduction number of parasites was recorded on 28 day of drug dosing. From the result of this research work it is obvious that Avipar® and Neotrax® are highly effective against ascariasis in chicken. These two drugs are safe and helpful against ascariasis of chicken in Bangladesh. So,it is concluded that these two anthelmintics can be used against ascariasis in chicken without any hesitation. th
