Abstract

The present study was conducted to find out phytochemical constituents, cytotoxic property and antimicrobial effect of available parts of Heritiera fomes by using different solvents during extraction. The phytochemical screening was performed following Standard Method. Presence of cytotoxicity was tested by in-vitro brine shrimp lethality bioassay with different concentrations (400μg/mL-1200μg/mL). Antimicrobial activity was tested by disk diffusion method with concentrations of 500μg/mL and 1000μg/mL. Alkaloids, steroids, resins were some of the chemical constituents identified during phytochemical screening. The plant indicated antimicrobial activity in dose-dependent manner with highest effect against Shigella dysenteriae and Shigella boydii when Ethyl Acetate was present as solvent. The mortality rate due to cytotoxic effect was observed below 50% and maximum cytotoxicity level was found in root extracts. Although experimented extract showed antimicrobial effect presence of which responsible bioactive compounds behind it was not investigated, thus further work regarding this can be done.
