Abstract

The experiment was conducted in the Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from July to November, 2014 to study the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus on the growth and yield of BRRI dhan57. The experiment comprised of two factors- Factor A: Levels of nitrogen (4 levels); N 0 : 0 kg N ha -1 i.e. control; N , N 2 : 120 kg N ha -1 , N 3 : 150 kg N ha -1 ; Factors B: Levels of phosphorous (3 levels)- P : 0 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 i.e. control, P 1 : 25 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 and P 2 : 35 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 . The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Data revealed that the tallest plant at 30, 60 DAT and at the time of harvest were found in case of treatments N 2 (120 kg N ha -1 ), P 2 (35 kg P ha -1 ) and treatment combination N 2 P (120 kg N and 35 kg P ha -1 ), whereas, the treatments N 0 , P 0 and treatment combination N 2 0 P (without N and P) showed the smallest plant height in each case, respectively. Side by side, the highest number of effective tillers hill -1 0 , highest length of panicle and the maximum number of filled grains panicle -1 were found in N 2 , P 2 treatments and N 2 P treatment combination. The highest weight of 1000 grains (20.85 g), grain yield (4.95 t ha 2 -1 ), straw yield (5.39 t ha -1 ), biological yield and (10.34 t ha -1 ) were found in the treatment combination N 2 P and also found highest in each individuals N 2 and P 2 2 treatments. N, P, K, S and Zn concentration in case of grain and straw were found the highest in N 2 , P 2 treatments and N 2 P treatment combination. The organic matter content (1.63%), total N (0.068%), available P (40.781 ppm), exchangeable K 2 1 : 90 kg N ha 0 -1 (0.184 me%) were found as the highest in the N 2 P 2 treatment combination and also found highest in each individual N 2 and P treatment except the highest organic matter content (1.52%) in the P 1 2 treatment. Application of 120 kg N ha -1 and 35 kg P 2 O was more potential in regarding yield contributing characters and yield of BRRI dhan57. 5
