Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a new means to enhance the speed, scalability and service provisioning capabilities for optimization of transmission resources. Traffic Engineering (TE) is the key feature of MPLS which is effectively used for managing the networks for efficient utilization of network resources. MPLS technology provides lower network delay, efficient forwarding mechanism, scalability and predictable performance of the services which makes it more suitable for implementing real-time applications such as Voice and video. In this report, comparative performance of MPLS network over conventional Internet Protocol (IP) network has been analyzed. NS-2 is used to simulate the both networks and the comparison and analysis is made based on the parameters such as Packet jitter, Packet delay, Packet drop. The simulation results are analyzed and it shows that MPLS network provides better performance than conventional IP network in implementing real-time applications such as Voice and video. Keywords: IP network, MPLS network, TE, QoS.
