NazrulPurpose: This study is aimed to determine the nature and dimensions of microfinance service and to have an understanding on borrower satisfaction level using various determinants of Grameen bank in Bangladesh. Methodology: This analysis of the study is based on primary data collected from 312 respondents who are the borrowers of Grameen bank. Five point likert scale questionnaire is used for quantification and chi-square test is used for the analysis. Findings: The results indicate that economic conditions of the borrowers, their income, and loan facilities of the bank, interest rates on the funds, insurance policy of the bank, transparent transactions, and bankers’ behavior with the borrowers have significant influence on borrower satisfaction. The study has also drawn some inferences such as reducing the interest rate, arranging training programs for their officials, giving individual borrower attention, improving customer service department etc. to foster better banking services for superior borrower satisfaction. Limitations: The research study has focused on six districts in Bangladesh. This could be extended to more areas. Time period for the study could also be extended. Practical Implications: The outcomes of the study would be helpful in formulating customer services policies and improving the quality of services to ensure much satisfaction to the borrowers for future growth. Originality: This study mainly focuses on the core customers in microfinance sector and as the prevailing level of satisfaction is very much important to sustain the market, this study has been done with direct intersection with the borrowers.Item An Evaluation of G-33 Proposal of Public Stockholding for Food Security in the Least Developed Countries: A Case Study on Bangladesh(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2022-08-01) Islam, SaifulPurpose: This study evaluates whether food security is a genuine case for public stockholding of rice in Bangladesh and whether the country should make the most of the G-33 proposal as an eligible signatory. Research Methodology: Using a qualitative research approach with descriptive statistics, this study analyses Bangladesh's food security, food self-sufficiency, existing public stockholding policy, and the potential impact of public stockholding of rice on production, market prices, and agricultural trade of Bangladesh. Findings: The findings show that Bangladesh is still positioned at the "serious" hunger level and could not achieve sustainable food self-sufficiency. At various crises, Bangladesh relies on the international market to supplement the required amount of rice, which justifies its rice stockholding for food security. Therefore, this study finds a legitimate ground for Bangladesh to exceed the current de minimis limit set under the AoA and use the provisions of the G-33 proposal only as an interim solution. Practical Implications: This study outlines the legitimate ground for adopting the G-33 proposal of public stockholding for food security in Bangladesh. Originality: This study also extends the theoretical base of the G-33 proposal for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), which are currently non-signatory of this proposal but requires more government support for food security in the country. Limitations: More in-depth research is required to quantify Bangladesh's new de minimis limit if the country wishes to adopt the G-33 proposal as an interim solution.Item Can Green Management Practices Ensure Environmental Sustainability? A Firm-Level Study on Readymade Garments Sector of Bangladesh(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2021-08-01) Hossen, Dr. Md. Miraj; Islam, Rashedul; Tumpa, Anindita SahaPurpose: The present study is an initiative to establish a relationship between green management practices and environmental sustainability in the ready-made garments (RMG) industries of Bangladesh. Methodology: The data were collected over 404 respondents covering 20 industries using a well-structured questionnaire. To analyze the data and test the formulated hypotheses statistical software SPSS was used. The study was based on a conceptual framework where green management practices, employees' sustainable behavior, and environmental sustainability were considered as independent, mediating, and dependent variables accordingly. Findings: The study findings reveal that there is a significant positive impact of developing green abilities (DGA), and providing green opportunities (PGO) on employees' intention to green and sustainable behavior. In addition, the employees' green behavior towards sustainability (EBTS) has a significant effect on environmental sustainability (ES). However, motivating green employees (MGE), and maintain green behavior (MGB) has no significant impact on employees' sustainable behavior. Limitations: The study is based on cross-sectional data collected from the primary source and covering 404 samples. It would be better if the researchers can cover vast areas with more samples and secondary data also. Practical Implication: The study is considered as a wake-up call for the related parties, decision-makers (managers and owners), government regulatory bodies, of garments manufacturing industries in Bangladesh. The findings of the study can play a significant role in taking decisions regarding any more investment decisions in green management practices in different sectors. Originality: The study is an original one and it has considered some specific areas of green management practices which make it different from other previous studies.Item Compliance of GRI G4 and Pattern of Sustainability Disclosure in the Corporate Sector of Bangladesh(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2021-08-01) Sarkar, Dr. Shakhawat HossainPurpose: The research is an attempt to find out the pattern and the level of sustainability disclosure as well as identify the relationship of sustainability disclosure with corporate characteristics. Methodology: The study used secondary sources of data collected through content analysis of the annual report of the listed companies in DSE based on GRI G4 guidelines. The sustainability disclosure index (SDI) is used as a measure of the level of disclosure. Data for the study analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics such as frequency, mean, standard deviation, percentile, and ANOVA. Findings: Statistical result implies that the mean SDI is poor (mean 12.19 and SD 9.61) compared to developed and developing countries where economic disclosure is five times higher than environmental and four times higher than social disclosure. Only about one-sixth of the companies prepared separate sustainability reports, and most of the companies disclose sustainability information in more than one place of the annual report. Sustainability disclosure is significantly related to category, nature, industry membership, ISO certification, multi-nationality, age, size, profitability, and leverage of the company. Limitations: The research used only quantity ignoring the quality of sustainability information from the one-year annual report of the company based on GRI G4 guidelines. Practical Implications: The research adds value to the existing knowledge of sustainability disclosure and provides a message to the policymakers. Originality: This is one of the pioneer studies that examined the level and pattern of sustainability disclosure in Bangladesh as well as showed the relationship between sustainability disclosure and company characteristics, considered as an evolving economy.Item Detecting Earnings Manipulation Practice by the M-Score Model: Evidence from the Listed Power Companies of Bangladesh(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2023-09-01) Sharif, Dr. Md. Jamil; AsfakuzzamanPurpose: The study aims to detect earnings manipulation practices, if any, and to investigate the relationship between company-specific characteristics and earnings management in the power sector of Bangladesh. Methodology: In this study, a panel dataset comprising data from annual reports of 22 power sector companies listed in the DSE was utilized. The dataset spanned seven consecutive years, from 2014 to 2020. To identify earnings manipulation practices, the researchers employed the Beneish M-Score model. Findings: The results of this study indicate that approximately 30% of the Fuel & Power sector companies listed in Bangladesh engage in information manipulation. Moreover, it was found that 64% of these manipulators received an unqualified opinion from auditors. Among the 22 selected power companies, 18 exhibited significantly higher M-Scores for at least one year during the period of 2014-202. Regression analysis shows that accrual quality has a significant positive association with earnings management, while the firm size and audit quality are negatively related to earnings manipulation. However, firm age and audit opinion did not demonstrate any significant influence on earnings management. Originality/Value: This study marks the pioneering use of the Beneish MScore model in the Fuel & Power sector of Bangladesh to detect earnings management practices. The findings suggest that having more non-cash items in the income statement allows management to manipulate, and large firms with strong corporate governance are less likely to manipulate information. These findings are valuable for decision-makers and stakeholders such as investors, policymakers, and the government. Limitations: Only one sector has been chosen for investigation in this study. Selecting more samples from each industry could give a broader picture of earnings manipulation practices by the companies in Bangladesh.Item Employee Job Satisfaction in the Banking Industry of Bangladesh: A Study on Islamic Banking in Dhaka City(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2020-08-01) Akterujjaman, S. M.Purpose: The main goal of this study is to analyse factors and measure the level of job satisfaction in the Islamic Banks (IBs) in Bangladesh. Methodology: Four IBs, Islamic Bank Bangladesh Ltd., First Security Islami Bank, Al-Arafah Islami Bank, and Shahjalal Islami Bank were selected for the study. The study surveyed 200 employees of IBs of Dhaka city to determine the key influential factors that significantly influence employees' job satisfaction. These employees were selected through a judgmental sampling method with a structured questionnaire from August to September 2019. Required data were gathered from the sample units through the survey method. SPSS version 20.0 was used to analyse the data. Findings: The findings of the paper will contribute and create new dimensional knowledge for obtaining the banks’ development, developing the service styles and processes, and increasing employees' job satisfaction. The research also revealed that through implementing the different influential factors such as salary, promotion, transport facilities, insurance benefits, working environment, holidays, working hours, incentives, provident fund, and medical allowances, the overall job satisfaction of the bank's employees’ increases. So, it can be said that for practicing human resources policies and strategies in the Islamic banks both the banks and employees are benefited. Limitations: Every research work may have, in a wide sense, some limitations and the completed study is not exception in this regard. In fact, sampling is a recognized technique of conducting any research in contemporary world, specially, in social science. The study was only on 4 Islamic Banks of Dhaka city, though there are other Islamic and Conventional Banks in Bangladesh. The result of the study which is drowning by the sampling method is not cent percent rigorous and it can represent average output of a concerned fact. However, it is expected that a little variation would not affect much of the overall findings of the study. Practical Implications: The overall, job satisfaction of employees serves as input for the continuous development of human resource practices in the banking industry of Bangladesh. Originality/Value: This study will add value to the banking industry of Bangladesh, especially in the Islamic banking that will help the by policy recommendation through which the industry will be able to retain employees by satisfying them toward their job.Item Enrollment of Expatriates in the Ready Made Garments (RMG) & Textile Sectors of Bangladesh(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2020-08-01) Islam, Saiful; Islam, Tasneem NabilaPurpose: This study aims to explore the employment of expatriates in the management role, the reasons and subsequent impact on the Ready Made Garment (RMG) and textile sectors of Bangladesh. Methodology: Based on a qualitative research approach, thirty experts from three levels of management of ten different firms have been interviewed using snowball and convenience sampling. Findings: Expatriates recruited in the top and mid-level management positions are mostly from India and Sri Lanka. Previously, they were primarily employed because of the scarcity of technical and managerial skills in Bangladesh but now are substituting the jobs that could otherwise be offered to the qualified domestic managers. High magnitude of corruption among home country managers, requisite to ensure efficiency and lack of technical skills have been cited as the prime causes of expatriates‟ presence. A collaborative effort from the government, owners and various stakeholders are required to change the current level of dependency on expatriates in the RMG and textile sectors of Bangladesh. Limitations: This exploratory research requires the inclusion of more substantial datasets and more specific determinants to complete conclusive research in the future. Practical Implications: This study outlines a holistic effort from all stakeholders in the RMG and textile sectors to reduce dependency on expatriates and create opportunities for more local employment and development of their skills and competencies. Originality/Value: The findings of this research shed some light on the existing gap in academic research regarding the issues of expatriates working in the management position of the RMG and textile sectors of Bangladesh.Item Export Trend of the Leather Industry of Bangladesh: Challenges to Sustainable Development(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2020-08-01) Rakib, Md. AbdurPurpose: The principal objectives of the study are to find out the contribution scenario of the leather sector towards the economic development of Bangladesh and to know the background of the leather industry, export performance, item wise contribution, country-wise export trend and contribution in GDP. Methodology: The present study is a descriptive one and based on mainly secondary information. The data was collected from various journals, research articles, thesis papers, newspapers, online news, survey reports, and annual reports and files. In this study, a descriptive technique was adopted in tabular form, column chart, line chart, pie chart, bar chart to analyze the results and represent collected data and information. Findings: The leather sector of Bangladesh is the second-largest export earners after the ready-made garments sector. This sector contributes enormously to the socio-economic development of Bangladesh. The research findings reveal that the export contribution of leather was 8.14% in FY 1990-91, but after that, the contribution of leather sector is decreasing, one of the main reasons is the export trade had been singlehandedly driven by the RMG sector, now its share is almost 2.52% ($1.01billion) of the export earnings. The study shows that the export earnings from leather footwear were 60% growth rate in FY 2018-19 due to riding the trend of increased leather footwear exports in the United States, whereas, the contribution of processed leather and leather products is 24% and 16% respectively. The study also reveals that the leather sector is contributing significantly to the GDP. Leather items are exported from Bangladesh to about 53 countries of the world. The leather sector is also a major employer of semi-skilled or unskilled workers, directly employs around 200,000 people and around 850,000 are connected to the sector indirectly. Limitations: I faced some difficulties for collecting data. Moreover, the study could not deliberate the reflection of statistical tools for analysis of the data. Practical Implications: The export earnings from the leather industry were in good shape before the inception of tannery relocation. But the tanneries are suffering from 2017 as the relocation hit the production of leather processing because some tanneries are not yet in operation. For improving the export performance, the study will be helpful for stakeholders, industry owners, and management, BTA, BFLLGFEA, LFMEAB and buyer’s association. Originality/Value: The study findings clearly showed and explained the comparative position of the export trend among processed leather, leather footwear and leather goods.Item Factors Affecting Inducement for Organic Farming in Bangladesh(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2021-08-01) Fariha, Nuraiya; Islam, SaifulPurpose: While organic farming is quite pervading around the world, it received minimal momentum in Bangladesh. Therefore, this study aims to find the dominant factors and major constraints to pursue organic farming in Bangladesh. Methodology: Primary data are collected from forty producers, one processor, and two distributors from the Bogura district. Mostly descriptive statistics are used to achieve the objectives. Findings: Findings show that lower cost of productions, ethical farming practices, higher return, and premium prices are the primary inducement for organic farming over the traditional methods. However, losing arable land, lack of credit and technical aid, and different marketing constraints are the notable impediments to purse organic farming in Bangladesh. Building awareness, developing effective marketing channels, private-public partnerships in production, storage, and distribution could be a way to reduce these impediments and encourage more organic farming in Bangladesh. Limitations: This study considers only one particular district of Bangladesh among the few where organic farming is prominent. Few other production locations could be included in future studies. Practical Implications: This study provides practical implications for existing and potential producers, processors, and distributors of organic farming in Bangladesh. Originality: This study provides a bridge to the existing literature gap in organizing organic farming in Bangladesh, especially by identifying the factors inducing organic farming and major constraints to this process.Item Investigation on Compliance in Ready-made Garment Factories in Bangladesh(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2021-08-01) Ashadullah, Md.Purpose: The objective of the study is to examine the compliance situation of Bangladesh's ready-made garment (RMG) factories. Methodology: For the analysis, survey data was collected from 88-export oriented RMG factories in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, and surrounding districts, including Gazipur and Narayanganj. Two workers from each factory were interviewed to explore the factory’s compliance status. The interviews took place from August to September 2019. The survey questionnaire used the main questions from the compliance assessment tool developed by the International Labor Organization, which contains various issues in compliance with international standards and national legislation. Findings: The study found that Bangladesh's RMG factories' compliance situation, especially the working environment, is improving. However, a highest level of non-compliance has been found in some areas such as trade union issues, payment of overtime, voluntary overtime issues, regular working time, leave facilities, and so on. Hence, significant improvement in these compliance issues is necessary. Limitations: This study has focused on the compliance issues of RMG factories from the workers' perspective. Hence, there is a scope for further study to measure the compliance situation of the RMG factories from the viewpoint of stakeholders. Practical Implication: This study discloses significant aspects of the compliance status of Bangladeshi RMG factories. The findings will provide inputs for policy design aimed at improving the factories’ compliance situation with the international standards. Originality: This study is particularly focused on compliance issues by using ILO formulated assessment tools and one of the studies in the area of Bangladesh RMG factories.Item Is Bangladesh Competent Enough to Confront Future Challenges? MuinuddinPurpose: This study investigates the comparative advantage of Readymade Garment (RMG) industry of Bangladesh compared to other major Asian competitors in the global market such as China, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka and Turkey from 2013 to 2017. Methodology: This study applies Balassa‟s Index of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) with data from World Trade Organization (WTO) database during the stated period of 2013 to 2017 to calculate the RCA index of competing economies in global clothing export. Additionally, correlation-coefficient of the clothing export of competing economies for the study period has been calculated to analyze the export pattern. Moreover, the consistency and volatility of comparative advantage measured by standard deviation and coefficient of variance of the RCA have been analyzed. Findings: All seven competing economies display some degree of comparative advantage, the strongest display of RCA score comes from Bangladesh, followed by Cambodia. The findings exhibited that Bangladesh‟s export pattern is highly undiversified to single industry compared to other Asian economies. It is also depicted that Bangladesh has been unsuccessful in grabbing the growth in global clothing export compared to Vietnam. There has been a strong negative correlation that exists between the clothing export of Bangladesh and China whereas strong correlation persists between Bangladesh and Vietnam. It has been also identified that although Bangladesh has the highest RCA among other considered economies, the volatility remains on the higher side. Limitations: This research study has only focused on five countries trade variables. Time period of analysis of the data could also be extended. Practical Implications: The outcomes of the analysis would be helpful in formulating export policies and identifying factors of competitiveness for selecting strategic business and industrial policy for future growth. Originality/Value: This paper is one of the limited attempts to perform a structured investigation of competitiveness of Bangladesh and its Major Asian Competitor on clothing (RMG) trade to international markets as very limited previous studies have been conducted in this area.Item Mediating Effect of Employee Engagement in the Relationship between Employee Job Satisfaction and Affective Organizational Commitment: Evidence from Hotel Industry in Bangladesh(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2021-08-01) Islam, Muhaiminul; Islam, SaifulPurpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effects of employee engagement in the relationship between job satisfaction and affective organizational engagement. The hotel industry of Bangladesh is selected as the context to investigate the relationship. Methodology: Using G-Power software, a sample size of 107 respondents have been chosen, who had already passed two years of their tenure in the three-stars and above hotels in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Cox's Bazar regions of Bangladesh. Data are collected through a survey questionnaire using the convenience sampling technique. In the analysis, the partial least square-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) is used preceded by the test of reliability and validity of each indicator. In this regard, SPSS 23 and SmartPLS-3 applications have been used. Findings: The findings show that job satisfaction increases the affective organizational commitment of the employees. Besides, job satisfaction boosts employee engagement, and engagement further accelerates employees' affective commitment. Hence, employee engagement performs the mediating role between job satisfaction and affective organizational commitment. Limitations: The findings of the study cannot be generalized across the country in a larger context due to the small sample size and specific to one single industry, which could be addressed in future studies. Practical Implications: This study provides useful implications for hotel managers to boost the employees' affective commitment by accelerating job satisfaction and engagement in the organization. Originality: This study also contributes to the body of knowledge by revealing employee engagement as a mediator in the relationship between employee satisfaction and commitment.Item Role of E-commerce Practices on Business Expansion: Observation in Dhaka City(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2022-08-01) Hossain, Dr. Md. Methodology: The study used the residual method to estimate capital flight in Bangladesh as an empirical approach. The Linear regression model has been used to estimate the effect of capital flight on the GDP growth rate, which is the proxy of economic growth. The causality test between capital flight and GDP growth is conducted using the Granger Causality test. Findings: The empirically-driven findings reveal a surprising positive correlation between capital dispersal and Bangladesh's economic development, contradicting the initial hypothesis of a negative association. However, the causality test shows that GDP growth does not have any impact on capital flight in Bangladesh. Practical Implications: This inquiry imparts significant perspectives about the repercussions of capital dispersion on the economic evolution of Bangladesh. Despite the unexpected positive association, it's crucial for Bangladesh to remain vigilant about potential risks correlated with capital flight. Consequently, this research proposes guidelines for regulatory bodies to restrain the consistent rise in capital outflows. Originality/Value: This research stands out as it fills the intellectual gap overlooked by previous studies, which neglected to examine this aspect in the context of Bangladesh. Given Bangladesh's recent economic strides, understanding the impact of capital flight on its GDP growth is crucial. Limitations: This study's scope is confined to the usage of the residual technique to approximate capital dispersal. A more robust research framework might offer a wider spectrum of results and a more profound comprehension.
