Item GENETIC DIVERGENCE IN Corchorus capsularis L(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2009-07) Yahiya, A. S. M.; Bhuiyan, M. S. R.; Islam, M. M.; Al-Mamun, M.; Rahman, M. M.Forty two white jute genotypes were analyzed through principal component analysis. principal coordinate analysis, canonical variate analysis and non-hierarchical clustering to identify suitable parents having distant relationship for hybridization programme. The genotypes were grouped into six different clusters. Cluster V had the maximum of eleven genotypes while cluster II had the minimum of three genotypes. The highest inter-genotypic distance was found between G36 and G39 and the lowest distance between G4 and G23.The highest inter-cluster distance was observed between clusters I and II, and the lowest inter-cluster distance was observed between clusters I and VI. The highest intra-cluster distance was found in cluster I and the lowest in cluster II. Cluster with large distances were considered more diverged than those with small distances. Genotypes of cluster II had the highest mean values for base diameter, middle diameter, top diameter, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight and that of cluster V had the highest mean values for technical height. leaf angle, leaf length and petiole length. Yield and yield contributing characters such as technical height, base diameter. dry fibre weight and dry stick weight contributed more towards genetic divergence considering diversity pattern. Based on inter cluster distances and desirable characters the genotypes G36 and G33 from cluster I: G28 and G35 from cluster II: G7. G39 and G41 from cluster IV; G3 from cluster VI have been selected for hybridization programme.Item GENETIC VARIABILITY, CHARACTER ASSOCIATION AND PATH ANALYSIS OF WHITE JUTE (Corchorus capsularis L.)(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Al-Mamun, M.; Hossain, M. S.; Khatun, R.; Yahiya, A. S. M.; Islam, M. M.ute (Corchorus capsularis L.) is an important fibre crop of manifold utility. Its fibre yield and quality is dependent on component characters which are quantitatively inherited and considerably influenced by environment. In crop plants, most economical characters are controlled by many genes. Physiological and linkage relationship have been frequently observed in genes governing various quantitative characters (Dhillon and Gupta, 1975). Hence, knowledge on the phenotypic and genotypic correlations between important characters is considered useful in planning an efficient breeding programme. Besides, correlations between important and unimportant characters may reveal that some of the latter are useful as indication of one or more of the important characters (Johnson et al., 1955 a). Thus, advancement through a breeding programme depends upon the extent of genetic variability in the population and the extent to which the desirable traits are heritable. In this context, correlation and path-coefficient analysis assume special importance as they not only measure mutual association but also estimate the direct and indirect contributions of perspective traits. This investigation was, therefore, undertaken to measure the genetic variability, nature of association among different plant traits and the potential applicability of path analysis techniques in breeding white jute.Item GENETIC VARIABILITY, CORRELATION AND PATH ANALYSIS IN TOSSA JUTE (Corchorus olitorius L.) GERMPLASM(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2008-07) Islam, M. M.; Ali, N. M.; Bhuiyan, M.. S. R.; Rahman, M. M.; Yahiya, A. S. M.Genetic variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis for yield and yield attributing traits in 41 indigenous genotypes and three commercially cultivated varieties of tossa jute were studied at the Central .lute Agricultural Experiment Station, Manikganj of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (B.1RI) during April to September 2007. Considering genetic parameters, high genotypic coefficient of variation and high heritability coupled with high genetic advance over mean were recorded for the characters- number of nodes per plant, green weight with leaves per plant, green weight without leaves per plant, stick weight per plant and fibre weight per plant suggesting better opportunity for selecting high valued genotypes based on these characters. Fibre yield per plant was significantly and positively correlated with green weight without leaves per plant and stick weight per plant at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Path coefficient analysis indicated maximum direct contribution of stick weight per plant towards fibre yield followed by internode length, green weight without leaves per plant, plant height and green weight with leaves per plant.Item PERFORMANCE OF SOME INDIGENOUS GERMPLASMS OF TOSSA JUTE (Corchorus olitorius L.)(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Islam, M. M.; Rahman, M. M.; Yahiya, A. S. M.; Miah, A.; Al-Mamun, M.Forty one indigenous genotypes of tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius L.) including three cultivated varieties were evaluated for comparati ve mean performance against nine di fferent morphological characters and growth rate at the Central Jute Agricultural Experiment Station, Jagir, Manikganj of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) during April to September 2007. Data were recorded on fibre yield and yield contributing characters viz. plant height, base diameter, number of nodes per plant, internode length, leaf area, green weight with leaves per plant, green weight without leaves per plant and stick weight per plant. Signi ficant variation was observed among the genotypes tested in respect of all the characters except internode length. The genotypes GI (Ace. No, 1232), Gl3 (Ace, No. 2541) and G21 (Ace, No. 2717) gave higher fibre yield (8.59g, 8.53g and 8.20g, respectively) compared with the check varieties 0-9897, OM-I and 0-72 indicating the possibility of 'Using them in future breeding programs. The genotypes G41 (Ace, No. 3907), GI (Ace. No. 1232) and G32 (Ace, No. 3413) showed considerably higher growth rate (35.46%, 19.73% and 19.09%, respectively) between 90 to 105 days of emergence, which indicated that selection of fast growing genotypes between 90 to 105 days of emergence would be more effective and judicious.
