Perceptions of University Students in Bangladesh towards the Challenges and Benefits of Online Classes: A Qualitativ e Approach
(East West University, 2023-12-31) Bhadra, Samir; Uddin, Md. Shawan; Ali, Mir Mokaddesh; Sheikh, Md. Imran; Sultana, Niger
The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions of students regarding the challenges and benefits of online classes based on their online classes’ experiences particularly during pandemic COVID-19. Following the interpretive research paradigm and cross-sectional design, this research is qualitative in nature. Using a semi-structured questionnaire the researchers conducted 30 in-depth interviews of the 23 public and private university students who are attending their classes virtually during the pandemic. The collected data was analyzed following a content analysis approach to evaluate the relationship among the ideas, the interview data, and the theoretical context. This study finds that in developing countries like Bangladesh, the online class system is a relatively new concept, so the participants face some difficulties such as low internet connection, electricity support, teachers’ capacities, and lack of institutional support as well as their technological engagement. As such participants face challenges that they do not learn as well as they would in regular classes. Moreover, the participants must comprehend the contrasts between traditional and online classrooms in order to improve their competence. However, participants are taking e-learning for extra advantages due to COVID-19 pandemic in order to reduce detachment from education and session gap. This study will be helpful to the policy-makers to develop proper rules to cope with such difficult situations, particularly when it comes to delivering communicative education to students particularly in a crisis situation.

The Determinants and the Magnitude of their Effectiveness on Online Learning during Covid 19 Pandemic in Bangladesh
(East West University, 2024-11-16) Uddin, Md. Shawan; Islam, Md. Rakibul; Oridi, Faria Islam; Rehena, Mst. Zinnat; Miah, Sapan
The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors and the extent of their effects on the effectiveness of online learning in Bangladesh during the COVID 19 pandemic. Moreover, this study intends to examine the mediating role of students’ online learning motivation by observing and comparing information and communication technology infrastructure, competencies in information and communication technology, and students-teachers interaction as predictors of students’ online learning motivation and effectiveness of online learning. Following the positivism research paradigm and cross-sectional design, the researchers adopt a quantitative approach using the survey method through a structured questionnaire covering 408 responses of undergraduate and graduate students from more than 23 public and private universities in Bangladesh. The 6-point Likert scale was used to measure the extent of effects of competencies in information and communication technology, competencies in information and communication technology, students-teachers interaction, and online learning motivation on the effectiveness of online learning using partial least squares based structural equation modeling. This study investigates three exogenous, one endogenous, and a mediating factor. This study finds significant effects of independent variables on effectiveness of online learning and a significant mediating role of online learning motivation between the independent variables and effectiveness of online learning apart from the direct effects of information and communication technology infrastructure on online learning motivation and competencies in information and communication technology on effectiveness of online learning. In addition, this study finds nonsignificant direct effects of competencies in information,

The Rights of Women Employees under Bangladesh Labor Act: The Case of Ready-Made Garment Industry in Bangladesh
(Faculty of Business Studies, BUFT, 2022-08-01) Bhadra, Samir; Ali, Mir Mokaddesh; Alam, Md. Mahabub; Rehena, Mst. Zinnat; Uddin, Md. Shawan
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the reality of practices of Bangladesh Labor Act (BLA) in protecting the rights of women employees in the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) industry in Bangladesh. Moreover, this study finds the barriers in romoting gender equality in the workplace particularly in the sector under study. Methodology: This study follows interpretative paradigm, qualitative in nature and cross sectional in data collection. Using convenient sampling technique 20 women employees from different RMG factories are interviewed in Mirpur, Dhaka. Through the content analysis of the data obtained from the interviews, the reality and accuracy of constructs, sub-variables, and items are examined. Findings: The findings of the study depicted that most of women workers have limited educational qualification and they also have the limitations in the knowledge regarding different provisions of BLA. All provisions specially related to women rights in the working place are not fully applied in RMG sectors. Gender discrimination is very common here in case of supervision, wages, and overtime facilities. Maternity leave, which is not enforced according to the law, was one of the major violations of rights mentioned by all of the women workers interviewed. Practical Implications: The practical implication of this study is to make awareness among the women employees regarding their rights according to the BLA and fill up their discrepancies by the stakeholders (i.e. management, owner, government agents). This study fills the gap in the literature regarding the reality of gender inequality practices in the working place particularly in the RMG sector in Bangladesh. Originality: The researchers focus on the provisions of BLA, 2006 and their practices in women employees’ rights protection in Bangladesh in workplace particularly in the context of RMG industry in Bangladesh along with the barriers hindering the practicing of such provisions which are not earlier studied so far. Limitations: The implicit assumption that the study’s conclusions would not be applicable to all industries because data were collected solely from small RMG industrial zone. In this study only women employees were included its sample. Moreover, quantitative or mixed-methods is absent in this study.
