    Aeromycoflora of Dhaka city, Bangladesh
(University of Dhaka, 2016-01-17) Sultana, Tania
The air influences every aspect of life and the activities of organisms affect the air. Sources of air borne microorganisms are everywhere. They are in food, water, on utensils and on bed sheets. The indoor and outdoor air is an important source of aeroallergens and pathogens. During the present investigation, monthly sampling of air borne mycoflora of Dhaka Metropolitan City, during February 2013 to January 2014 was recorded. The fungal colonies developed in PDA media were isolated from five different locations in the morning and evening in monthly intervals. The total number of counted fungal colonies were 6648 out of which in the morning was 3268 and in the evening it was 3380 and 156 colonies were sterile mycelia. The sampling sites were Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University, Gulistan, Dhaka Medical College, Sadarghat and DOHS, Mohakhali. The qualitative nature of the mycoflora, their mean, standard deviation, percent frequency and correlations to the total mycoflora, monthly periodicity have been described in this investigation. In this study, fifteen genera have been recorded viz. Alternaria, Arthrinium, Aspergillus, Bipolaris, Chaetomium, Cladosporium, Colletotrichum, Curvularia, Fusarium, Nigrospora, Penicillium, Pestalotia, Rhizopus, Syncephalastrum and Trichoderma under the class Ascomycetes, Zygomycetes and Deuteromycetes. Local fluctuations of the air borne fungi in relation to some meteorological parameters were also studied. The three most dominant fungal species were Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Penicillium contributing 30.71, 18.10 and 12.79% in the evening and in the morning it was 28.82, 15.78 and 11.53% in twelve months counting of the total colonies, respectively. Aspergillus was found in the highest frequency in the present investigation among the identified genera. In the present study Cladosporium was found 2nd position in term of its percent frequency. Maximum number of fungal colonies were found in Gulistan and Sadarghat in the morning and evening. During the twelve months investigation maximum fungal colonies were found in August and September as all the climatic factors were favorable for the fungal growth, their dispersal and survival. Among the fungi, found in the present investigation Alternaria, Aspergillus, Chaetomium, Cladosporium, Curvularia, Fusarium, Penicillium and Rhizopus were reported as pathogenic to plants and/or human and strongly allergenic to human. Bipolaris, Colletotrichum, and Pestalotia were reported as only plant pathogens. The present study contributes to our knowledge of air borne spores in the Dhaka City. Regular monitoring of air borne fungi can be helpful in the prevention of fungal allergic diseases in the city.

Application of the Sine-Gordon Expansion Method to Obtain Soliton Solutions of the KdV and mKdV Equations
(Department of Mathematics Uttara University, 2025-09-29) Sultana, Tania
In this work, we apply the Sine-Gordon Expansion Method (SGEM) to construct explicit soliton solutions of the classical Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) and modified Korteweg–de Vries (mKdV) equations, which play fundamental roles in nonlinear science and mathematical physics. The SGEM, based on the expansion of solutions in terms of the sine–Gordon equation, provides an efficient and systematic framework to derive exact traveling wave solutions of nonlinear evolution equations. By employing suitable transformations, we reduce the governing partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations and then obtain analytical expressions for various types of solutions, including solitary wave and periodic solutions. The derived results demonstrate the capability of the SGEM in handling nonlinear dispersive equations and further highlight its effectiveness compared to other existing analytical methods. These exact solutions not only contribute to the theoretical study of nonlinear wave propagation but also have potential applications in fluid dynamics, plasma physics, and optical communications.

Disclosure practices in Bangladesh: A critical review on Islamic insurance companies
(International Islamic University Chittagong, 2022-12) Sultana, Tania
The aim of the study is to analyze the reporting and disclosure practices in Islamic insurance (takaful) companies in Bangladesh. The accounting system is not the same for the both conventional and Islamic insurance companies as the principles and functions of takaful are different from the traditional one. The study included five Islamic insurance companies out of six as the sample organizations by using purposive sampling method. The un-weighted disclosure index (UDI) method has been used to grade the sample organizations on their disclosures in the annual reports for the period from 2015 to 2019. MS excel has been used to analyze the data. Despite their common regulatory rules, some differences have been found in presenting their reports of the sample Islamic insurance companies. According to UDI value, on the whole disclosure status of the selected insurance companies are good. This study found that the deviations in reporting in the selected takaful companies are not insignificant. The increasing trend of disclosure of the takaful companies bears the good indication.

Harmful practices prevail despite legal knowledge: A mixed-method study on the paradox of child marriage in Bangladesh
(Taylor & Francis, 2/24/2021) Akter, Sayema; Williams, Chloe; Talukder, Animesh; Islam, Muhammed Nazmul; Escallon, Juanita Vasquez; Sultana, Tania; Kapil, Neha; Sarker, Malabika
Child marriage is a globally recognised human rights violation that disproportionately affects girls, especially in developing countries. It has serious negative consequences on girls’ physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health and rights. Although well-pronounced laws against child marriage were enacted in Bangladesh, the practice remains a significant challenge. Lack of law enforcement and persistent social norms ultimately allow child marriage to persist around the country. Social norms have an impact on the prevalent attitudes toward child marriage. Therefore, this mixed-method study aimed to explore the legal knowledge, perception, and practice of child marriage in Bangladesh. This study was part of a broader evaluation of a UNICEF media programme. Adolescent boys and girls aged between 10 and 19 years and their parents were interviewed in three Bangladeshi districts. All the respondents were aware of the legal age of marriage and knew that child marriage is punishable by law. This study illuminated the reasons, including early marriage among boys, poverty, dowry, and sexual harassment. Communities and policymakers need to be engaged to trigger larger structural and cultural changes to remedy the harmful social norm and its practice
