Examining the Disparities of Anti-Malarial Drug Consumption Among Children Under the Age of Five
(Springer, 2023-12-05) Hossain, Md Sabbir; Ahmed, Talha Sheikh; Sultana, Nahid; Chowdhury, Muhammad Abdul Baker; Uddin, Md Jamal
Background Malaria is one of the most prominent illnesses affecting children, ranking as one of the key development concerns for many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). There is not much information available on the use of anti-malarial drugs in LMICs in children under five. The study aimed to investigate disparities in anti-malarial drug consumption for malaria among children under the age of five in LMICs. Methods This study used recent available cross-sectional data from the Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS) datasets across five LMICs (Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone), which covered a portion of sub-Saharan Africa. The study was carried out between January 2, 2023, and April 15, 2023, and included children under the age of five who had taken an anti-malarial drug for malaria 2 weeks before the survey date. The outcome variable was anti-malarial drug consumption, which was classified into two groups: those who had taken anti-malarial drugs and those who had not. Results In the study of LMICs, 32,397 children under five were observed, and among them, 44.1% had received anti-malarial drugs. Of the five LMICs, Kenya had the lowest (9.2%) and Mali had the highest (70.5%) percentages of anti-malarial drug consumption. Children under five with malaria are more likely to receive anti-malarial drugs if they are over 1 year old, live in rural areas, have mothers with higher education levels, and come from wealthier families. Conclusion The study emphasizes the importance of developing universal coverage strategies for anti-malarial drug consumption at both the national and local levels. The study also recommends that improving availability and access to anti-malarial drugs may be necessary, as the consumption of these drugs for treating malaria in children under the age of five is shockingly low in some LMICs.

Optimal Lot-size Decision for Deteriorating Items with Price-sensitive Demand, Linearly Time-dependent Holding Cost Under All-units Discount Environment
(International Journal of Systems Science: Operations and Logistics, 2020-08-23) Khan, Md. Al-Amin; Ahmed, Shifat; Babu, Md. Shohel; Sultana, Nahid
Due to the competitive market dynamics and globalization, it gradually becomes challenging for the manufacturers or suppliers to entice any potential customer and turn into actual one. In this connection, to attract the retailers’ consideration, manufacturers or suppliers offer an order size dependent discount policy where the per unit purchase cost is measured as a descending step function of the amount of order quantity. A profit maximizing inventory model is constructed for a deteriorating product where demand of the product is dependent on selling price, per unit carrying cost as linearly time varying and also proportional to the per unit purchase price under all-units discount environment. After examining the optimality of the decision variables a solution algorithm is suggested to achieve the optimal values of the selling price per unit and replenishment cycle length along with the optimal order size for optimizing the net profit. Two computational experiments are executed along with observing the applicability of the proposed algorithm. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is performed for the model by changing the values of all parameters and hence a conclusion is made regarding the current study.

(Centre for Research on Islamic Management and Business, 2014-06) Hasan, Md. Maruf; Sultana, Nahid
This paper examines the impacts of unethical behavior in organization through a multi-layered study of the six selected Bangladeshi organizations. By examining contemporary cases relating to ethics, we clarify the types of common unethical behavior happening within the organizations. We also describe the ethical view in Islam while working in any organization. How human resource management can be guided by ethics is the major concern of the study. The time period of studied matter is three years specifically in the year of 2011 to 2013. Observational and interview methods are used for collecting data. This report confronts the argument that ethics can act as good governance in practicing human resource management.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PLANKTON POPULATION AND THE SURVIVAL OF EPIDEMIC VIBRIO CHOLERAE IN BANGLADESH
(©University of Dhaka, 2022-02-22) Sultana, Nahid
In spite of the considerable number of critical work that has been conducted on the diarrhoea causing Vibrio cholarae bacterium, the ecological role of it’s habitat, survival and association with plankton in Bangladesh still little known. The study was conducted at twelve ponds, one canal and one river ecosystems from two geographical locations i.e., Mathbaria and Chhatak, of Bangladesh between the year 2013 and 2014 to assess the role of selected climatic and limnological parameters on the Vibrio cholarae and plankton population. Sampling was done on weekly basis during the outbreak season of cholera, while fortnightly in non-infectious period. From the coastal seven ponds of Mathbaria 86 species of zooplankton was recorded, of which 27 species of protozoa, 43 species of rotifera, 8 species of copepod and 8 species of cladocera. Freshwater ponds and river of Chhatak exhibited in total of 100 species of zooplankton of which 14 species belonged to the phylum protozoa, 58 species of rotifera, 9 species of copepod and 19 species of cladocera. In Mathbaria two peak seasons of cholera existed, summer (March-May) and autumn (September-November) where site-2 (pond), site-8 (local canal) and site-11 (pond) were recognized as suspected V. cholerae contaminated ponds due to the isolation of toxigenic V. cholerae O1 from these water bodies. The total zooplankton, specially crustacean plankton was dominantly recorded during peak season of cholera in all water bodies. In Mathbaria, crustacean planktonic nauplii were recorded in highest number in both peak infection seasons. In non-contaminated ponds ponds (sites-5, 7 and 9) protozoa, rotifer and nauplii were dominant in the peak season of cholera. In Chhatak, peak season of cholera infection was occurred only once in autumn (September-November). Three sampling sites in Chhatak as site-1 (pond), site-10 (Surma River) and site-12 (pond) were suspected as V. cholerae contaminated. During the study in Mathbaria and Chhatak seasonal species of copepod Cyclops sp., Diaptomus sp. and cladocera Diaphanosoma sp.were dominant plankton in two areas. Hydroclimatological factors like total rainfall in Mathbaria started to increase during summer peak (April) and then decrease at the end of autumn peak (November). On the other hand, in Chhatak total rainfall was highest during peak season (September-October) of cholera in the 2013. It was aided by highest air temperature during the peak seasons of cholera in Mathbaria and Chhatak. In pond ecosystem, micronutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus was found to be highest to improve primary productivity during peak V. cholerae season. Laboratory based microcosm study on copepods from three water sources inoculated with the pure culture of toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 revealed that the count of bacteria was increased with the increased production of nauplii. Direct Fluorescent Antibody (DFA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images exhibits positive association of Vibrio cholerae O1 with extracted crab and shrimp chitin. Considering the biomass, the amount of minimum nauplii biomass was found to be 94.3 g per cubic meter dry weight during peak season in the water samples. From this study, it is evident that the hydroclimatic factors in association with the limnological parameters is creating a favorable condition for the emergence and survibility of V. cholerae bacteria in the. The water temperature, crustacean zooplankton abundance with certain biomass under favourable nutrients state in the contaminated water bodies help in ensuring the maximum environmental condition for Vibrio cholerae survibility. In spite of long geographical distances of coastal Mathbaria water bodies are more vulnerable to contamination and disease spread than freshwater Chhatak waters. However, the environmental challenges being overcome by the bacterium during the infection season.

Taxonomy, propagation and chemical properties of selected Anticancerous plants of Bangladesh
(University of Dhaka, 2019-06-20) Sultana, Nahid
This dissertation explains the identification of the anticancerous plants of Bangladesh and their taxonomic enumeration, propagation experiment of some selected anticancerous plants and chemical and biological investigation of two anticancerous plants of Bangladesh, namely Aphanamixis polystachya (Wall.) R. N. Parker and Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz. Oroxylum indicum belongs to the family Bignoniaceae is a deciduous tree, characterized by compound leaf, long terminal raceme, zygomorphic flowers, campanulate calyx, 5 stamens, axile placentation, sword-like fruits, winged seeds. Aphanamixis polystachya belongs to the family Meliaceae is an evergreen tree characterized by compound leaf, sweet-scented flowers, reddish calyx, waxy petals, 6 stamens, 3-lobed stigmas, obovoid fruits and plano-convex seeds. Over 3000 plant species have been used in one way or another for cancer treatment. In Bangladesh, a total of 220 plant species have been identified having anticancerous properties through literature survey. Propagation experiment of 10 species were carried out. Among them, the highest germination rate (100%) was observed in Plumbago zeylanica and the lowest germination rate (10%) was noticed in Abrus precatorius. In case of Vitex trifolia, seeds were not germinated, however, this plant species was propagated by stem cutting process. Out of the five stem cuttings, all five came out to leafy branches in Vitex trifolia. A thorough and systematic study has been carried out in order to isolate compounds having anticancer properties. The study describes the isolation and characterization of compounds from the root bark of O. indicum, and bark and leaves of A. polystachya. In addition, the crude methanol extract of the root bark of O. indicum, and bark and leaves of A. polystachya and its different soluble partitionates i.e. petroleum ether, DCM (dichloromethane), chloroform, ethyl acetate and aqueous soluble fractions were obtained by Kupchan partitioning subjected to screenings for anticancer activities.

The Role of NGOs in Increasing Awareness among Vulnerable Women in Bangladesh: A Study on Two Selected NGOs in Rajshahi District
(University of Rajshahi, 2005) Sultana, Nahid; Islam, Naznin
Women can play an equal and vital role in all sorts of development activities of a country .Approximately half of the total population of Bangladesh is woman. From a long time being, religious fanaticism and superstitions are considered to be the main barrier of women’s development. Like one cannot ignore the contributions of women in the question of expansion of society and civilization, similarly sustainable and fruitful development cannot be acquired without the participation of women. Despite of the equality of man-women ratio in Bangladesh, the importance and potentialities of women have been disregarded in socio - economic developments till today. Women are suffering in every respect in this country. From a long time, this trampled situation makes women apathetic and unconscious about her country, society and herself Right from their birth, women are neglected in food sharing, education, work, independent thinking, and right to property, choice and matters of decision making. Patriarchy still controls all institutions of the society, the parliament, military establishments, judiciary, education and benevolent organizations etc. Women have inadequate access to the law, due to illiteracy, lack of legal literacy, information and resources, insensitivity and gender bias. They are also lack awareness of women's human rights in general. But now everybody realize that without the contribution and participation of women the proper development and prosperity of the country cannot be possible. So, to improve the backward and in awareness situation, Government of Bangladesh takes various initiatives. But it 1s very difficult for the government alone to aware the backward women in a short period of time. So the government helps and supports various non government organizations (NGOs) to works for these vulnerable women. NGOs are working with the government to establish the rights and overall development of women. NGOs enable their clients and beneficiaries to graduate into higher standards of living. In addition to their poverty alleviation programs, they set many motivational programs for the women at grassroots level. These programs have made women aware of their rights and the women have their platform to raise their voices………………..
