Item A qualitative exploration of Bangladeshi STEM graduates’ English speaking(BRAC University, 2022-01) Sharmin, Nusrat; Ahmed, SabreenaEnglish speaking skills especially in the ESOL context like Bangladesh, STEM graduates are facing many challenges in terms of English speaking. Many of them are not proficient to speak in English well as they face many challenges. That is why this study aims to explore the challenges and identify the solutions to reduce the speaking challenges of STEM graduates in Bangladesh. For collecting data, the researcher of this study took an individual English-speaking test of 6 STEM graduates, following the IELTS speaking module, conducted observation, and semi-structured interviews for in-depth analysis. The results of this study revealed that most STEM graduates’ English speaking skill was of the “limited users” category which was proven based on their speaking test. The reason for being “limited users” in English speaking they face many challenges such as psychological, social, linguistic, and instructional. As they are from Bangla medium background students become nervous and less confident while speaking in English that falls psychological problems. On the other hand, not having an appropriate environment to practice speaking English and peers' negative responses are some of the social problems they face. Linguistic problems include lack of vocabulary knowledge and correct pronunciation while engineering teachers’ negative feedbacks, using Bangla instead of English in the classrooms are instrumental problems. However, STEM graduates try to overcome the challenges by using various affective and cognitive strategies. The fact is, in the modern era speaking ability in English is required in every sector. As a result, English speaking skills are most important especially in the ESOL context for STEM graduates who want to engage in jobs in international organisations as well as have a desire to go abroad for higher studies related to STEM background, accordingly the teachers of STEM should emphasise on English speaking proficiency of STEM students.Item An efficient wedge merging scheme for energy hole mitigation in wireless sensor networks(Institute of Information and Communication Technology, BUET, 2017-07-29) Sharmin, Nusrat; Alam, Dr. Mohammad ShahIn multi-hop Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), nodes closer to Base Station (BS) need to relay tra c from other nodes of the network which makes their energy depleted very fast and may cause an energy hole in the network. Moreover, energy consumption among nodes is not balanced due to non-uniform distribution of nodes and it causes some node to drain out their energy faster than other nodes in the network. In WSN, this energy hole problem plays a key factor to reduce the lifetime of the network as data cannot be sent from other sensor nodes to the BS although the residual energy in the network remains high. Some techniques to alleviate the energy hole problem include using a mobile sink, extending transmission range, and deploying redundant of the node near to the Sink. But the load of each node is still unbalanced and high energy consumption node die early. In order to reduce energy holes in the network, a new scheme WEMER based on WEdge MERging, is proposed here. In WEMER, the whole network is divided into many small equiangular wedges. When the residual energy of all the nodes within a wedge becomes less than 40% of their initial energy, thereby increasing the probability of energy holes creation, this wedge merges with the neighboring wedge to thwart the energy holes formation. Simulation results show that proposed scheme balances the energy consumption among nodes and achieves much longer lifetime than the contemporary schemes like Power E cient Gathering in Sensor Information Systems (PEGASIS) , Concentric Clustering Scheme (CCS) and Multilayer Cluster Designing Algorithm (MCDA). xiItem Design and development of a QPSK modulator(BRAC University, 2010-04) Akter, Shanaz; Sharmin, Nusrat; Islam, Md. Iftekharul; Majumder, Satya PrashadQPSK or Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying is a higher order modulation scheme used in digital modulation. In this project, we will be implementing a QPSK modulator for a wireless communication link. The carriers will be chosen as orthogonal frequencies to reduce the bandwidth of the output signal. Later the design will be simulated by PSPICE and will be fabricated on a PCB. The output signal waveform will be measured and tested to find the signal quality and the SNR or Signal to Noise Ratio.Item Document driven decision support system: A practitioner’s approach(Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Military Institute of Science and Technology, 2012-12) Rahman, Sharmin; Islam, Sharmin; Sharmin, Nusrat; Rahman, Dr. Mohammad LutfurDecision Support Systems (DSS) are computerized information system that helps decision makers with decision-making activities. DSS are interactive computer-based system that uses data, document, communication technologies, knowledge and model to support decision making process. In this thesis, we consider top two data mining algorithms in the research community: k-means and k-nearest neighbor (kNN). Given C = fc1; :::;cmg is a set of pre-defined categories, an initial corpus Co = fd1; :::;dsg of documents previously categorized under the same set of categories and a training set Tr = fd1; :::;dgg. This is the set of example documents observing the characteristics of which the classifiers for the various categories are induced and D = fd1; :::;dng is a set of documents to be categorized. The problem is to assign a value from f0;1g to each entry, ai j where 1 i m, 1 j n of the decision matrix. A value of 1 for ai j is interpreted as a decision to file dj under ci, while a value of 0 is interpreted as a decision not to file dj under c. A test set Te =dg+1; :::;ds will be used for the purpose of testing the effectiveness of the induced classifiers. Each document in Te will be fed to the classifiers and a measure of classification effectiveness will be based on how often the values for the ai j’s obtained by the classifiers match the values for the cai j’s provided by the experts where cai j is the element of correct decision matrix and 1 i m , 1 j s. We implemented these two algorithms and perform cross-validation test to measure accuracy of them. It comes out that; kNN is more accurate than that of k-mean. Then we develop tracing of document-driven DSS to provide an explanation to improve the acceptance of decision makers, because decisions are based on both the inheritance among documents and acceptance of those advices for decision makers. So, we develop a tracing on the contents and the classification of interrelated documents to improve the explanation.Item Mental health problems among the students of dhaka university and outcome of psychological treatment on them(© University of Dhaka, 2025-04-30) Sharmin, NusratItem Study Of Proxy Mobile IPv6(Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Military Institute of Science and Technology, 2013-12) Sharmin Afroze, Lt; Sharmin, Nusrat; Rahman, SazzadurA network-based mobility management protocol called Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) is being actively standardized by the IETF NETLMM working group, and is starting to attract considerable attention among the telecommunication and Internet communities. Unlike the variousexistingprotocolsforIPmobilitymanagementsuchasMobileIPv6(MIPv6),which are host-based approaches, a network-based approach, PMIPv6 has salient features such as support for unmodified mobile nodes, support for both IPv4 and IPv6, efficient use of wireless link and improved handover performance. In this thesis, we have explained the architecture of PMIPv6 with its detailed signaling diagram. We have compared PMIPv6 with MIPv6 in term of some characteristics and performance aspects and identified some drawbacks of PMIPv6. We have also presented handover latency calculation of MIPv6, HMIPv6 and PMIPv6 based on an analytical model. The results show that PMIPv6 has superior performance to other two protocols(MIPv6 and HMIPv6).
