    Effect of daylight saving time on Bangladesh power systems

    Load management is an usual practice to meet the increasing peak demand of electricity and is a common practice in western countries. Implementing daylight saving time (DST) is one option of Load Management which shifts the consumers demand from the peak to the off-peak period. Bangladesh has recently started the use of DST as a tool for Load Management practice. However, it has not yet been evaluated to determine how effective this practice is in our country. Does it really help use or worsen the already stretched out electric resources. The objective of the project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the DST on Bangladesh power system. To evaluate the effectiveness of Load Management model will be developed and the process will evaluated and data will be collected. Using these data a model will be formed along with some indices in order to quantify the effects.

    Efficiency of IPS and its effect on Bangladesh Power systems

    Shortage of energy has always been a part of our life for many years in Bangladesh. Every year, the situation becomes more and more dire. In order to adjust with this, a some of us procured Instant Power Supply (IPS) to provide backup electricity at the time of load shading. The concept of an IPS is very simple; it stores energy in a battery when electricity is present in the main supply and during load shading hours, the energy stored in those batteries is supplied. However, some questions still remain. How effective are IPS? What percentage of the energy consumed to charge an IPS can we actually get back? To find the answers, I will be conducting a series of tests to determine the energy intake while charging the battery, determine the energy supplied while discharging the same battery and its effect on Bangladesh Power Systems.

    Modeling the energy consumption of a lift

    A semi-rigorous and generalized model has been developed to determine the electrical energy (Watt-hour) consumed by the motor of a typical lift in each step of an upward or a downward travel cycle. The model has been validated comparing its output with the actual readings taken from an energy meter (installed at the terminal of the motor) for several cycles of the traffic according to the existing route map for a real-life lift. The developed model can be used as a decision support tool by the energy managers of high rise buildings to revise the route map of a group of lifts time to time depending upon the needs. With the model they can simulate intended variations in the floor and traffic plans and compare their impacts upon the energy consumption. As an example the developed model has been demonstrated for the system of three lifts located in the 20 storied main building of BRAC University.
