    EFFECT OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC FERTILIZERS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF SOYBEAN (Glycine max L.)

    An experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm Dhaka, Bangladesh to study the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizers on growth and yield of soybean (Glycine max L.) during the period from November 2021 to March 2022 (Rabi season). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with seven organic and inorganic fertilizer treatments i.e. T 1 : 100% RCF (Recommended chemical fertilizer) + 0 t ha vermicompost, T 2 : 75% RCF + 2 t ha -1 vermicompost, T 3 : 75% RCF + 3 t ha vermicompost, T 4 : 75% RCF + 4 t ha -1 vermicompost, T 5 : 50% RCF + 2 t ha vermicompost, T 6 : 50% RCF + 3 t ha -1 vermicompost and T : 50% RCF + 4 t ha -1 7 vermicompost. For the purpose of evaluating the experimental outcomes, data on various parameters were statistically analyzed for evaluation of the different treatment effects. Experimental result revealed that the highest number of branches plant -1 (3.46), fresh weight plant -1 (10.60 g), number of pods plant (27.53), pod length (4.21 cm), seeds pod -1 (3.97), 1000-seed weight (115.67 g), seed yield (1.86 t ha -1 ), stover yield (2.17 t ha -1 ), biological yield (4.03 t ha ) and harvest index (46.15 %). were found in T treatment. On the other hand, the lowest value of these properties were obtained in T 4 (100% RCF) treatment. Soil pH, organic matter content, N, P, K, S of post harvest soil at surface (0-15 cm) layer, varied significantly amon different treatments. The highest pH in post harvest soil of soybean (6.27), organic matter content (1.86 %), total nitrogen content (0.069 %), available phosphorus (30.07 ppm), available potassium (0.171 meq/100 g soil) and available sulphur (17.66 ppm) were recorded with T 1 (75% RCF + 4 t ha -1 vermicompost) treatment whereas the lowest value were found in T treatment. Therefore, based on the above findings, it could be conclude that the use of vermicompost not only reduce the recommended doses of inorganic fertilizer but also improves the soil physico chemical properties and availability of nutrients in soil in the long run sustaining the soil productivity and improve growth and yield of soybean.

    PERFORMANCE OF METSULFURON METHYL 10% + CHLORIMURON ETHYL 2% ON WEED INHIBITION, GROWTH AND YIELD OF AROMATIC AMAN RICE VARIETIES

    The field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), during July to December 2018 with a view to find out the performance of modern aromatic rice as affected by the herbicidal weed control method. Weed control methods viz.: W 0 – No herbicide Used (Control), W 1 – Metsulfuron methyl 10% + Chlorimuron ethyl 2% @ 15 g ha −1 , W 2 – Metsulfuron methyl 10% + Chlorimuron ethyl 2% @ 20 g ha −1 and W 3 – Metsulfuron methyl 10% + Chlorimuron ethyl 2% @ 25 g ha and 30 days old seedlings of V 1 - BRRI dhan70, V 2 - BRRI dhan79 and V 3 - BRRI dhan80 were transplanted on the well-puddled experimental plots on 04 August 2018 by using two seedlings hill −1 . The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. The size of the individual plot was 4 m × 2.5 m and total numbers of plots were 36. There were 12 treatment combinations. Herbicidal weed control was placed along the main plot and variety in the sub plot. The results revealed that number of days to weed emergence and number of weeds in a plot were significantly influenced by the different weed control treatments. The minimum number of days to weed emergence and maximum weed species m −2 were observed from the plot where no herbicides were used.On the other hand, the maximum number of days to weed emergence and minimum weed species m were observed from the plot where Metsulfuron methyl 10% + Chlorimuron ethyl 2% @ 20 g ha were used. Among the varieties The lowest number of weed species m iii −2 were observed from BRRI dhan79 plot. Different weed control treatments with varietal combination had significant effect on crop growth parameters and yield and yield-contributing characters of aromatic rice varieties. The tallest plant was observed from Metsulfuron methyl 10% + Chlorimuron ethyl 2% @ 15 g ha −1 and BRRI dhan79 (123.10 cm). The highest effective tiller (18.87), longest panicle (35.81 cm), maximum total filled grain panicle −1 (97.97), maximum number of filled grain panicle −1 −1 −2 (86.46), highest weight of 1000-grain (29.24 g), highest grain yield (6.24 t ha ), highest harvest index (68.25 %) and maximum days to weed emergence (24.33 days) was obtained from the combination Metsulfuron methyl 10% + Chlorimuron ethyl 2% @ 20 g ha −1 with BRRI dhan70. The combination of Metsulfuron methyl 10% + Chlorimuron ethyl 2% @ 20 g ha −1 and BRRI dhan70 showed better performance on growth and yield of rice under the present study.

    STANDARDIZATION OF HOT WATER TREATMENT IN CONTROLLING MAJOR SEED BORNE PATHOGENS OF VEGETABLES

    The experiment was conducted to standardize the hot water in controlling major seed borne pathogens of selected vegetables during the period from September 2017 to March 2018, in the central laboratory of the Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207. Effect of dipping seed in hot water at 50 to 60 °C for 5 minutes against seed borne microflora were explored to standardize the temperature and time in controlling seed borne pathogens of bitter gourd, pumpkin, bottle gourd, cucumber, eggplant, chilli, tomato, lady´s fingers, radish and country bean seeds. The treatments were T 0 T 3 T 6 = Control, T 1 = 54 ºC for 5 minutes, T 4 = 50 ºC for 5 minutes, T 2 =56 ºC for 5 minutes, T 5 = 52 ºC for 5 minutes, = 58 ºC for 5 minutes and = 60 ºC for 5 minutes. Data were collected on % seed germination, % seed infection, % rotten seed and % dead seed. The experiments were conducted following Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and analyzed by computer package MSTAT-C. Significant differences were found in all the parameters. The highest seed germination in all the vegetables were recorded at the treatment where seeds were treated at 54 °C to 58°C for 5 minutes and the lowest were obtained at control. The lowest rotten seed of all the vegetables recorded in 60 °C and the highest rotten seeds obtained at T 0 (control). The highest dead seed of studied vegetables were recorded in T 6 (60 °C for 5 minutes) and the lowest were obtained at T 0 (control). The lowest infected seed of studied vegetables were recorded in treatment T 6 (60 °C for 5 minutes) and the highest infected seeds were obtained at T 0 (control). In most cases Chaetomium sp., Aspergillus spp., Penicillium spp., and Fusarium spp. etc were prevalent in the seed samples. So, hot water seed treatment with 54 °C to 58°C for 5 minutes could be suggested as safe, pollution free and environmental friendly for management of seed borne pathogens of selected vegetables.
