    BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF COLLAR ROT OF TOMATO CAUSED BY Sclerotium rolfsii

    A study was carried out in the laboratory and under field condition to find out the effectiveness of Trichoderma harzianum as a boiagent for controlling collar rot (Sclerotium rolfsii) of tomato. The pathogen was collected from naturally infected tomato plant and isolated by tissue planting method. Fomulated Trichoderma harzianum was collected from IPM Laboratory, Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The 7richoderma harzianum showed excellent effect in controlling collar rot disease of tomato in field experiment. The maximum emergence of lesion size (9.003 mm) was observed in tomato plants inoculated with only S. ro/fsii. The minimum emergence of lesion size (2.900 mm) was observed in bio-fungicide treated plots. The highest total mortality (61.11%) was recorded in S. rolfsii inoculated plots and the lowest (24.07%) was in bio-fungicide treated plot. The plant height, number of inflorescence, number of branches and number of fruits per plant were the highest in bio-fungicide treated plots, while the minimum in S. rolfsii inoculated plots. Trichoderma harzianum treated plots resulted the highest yield performance (27.23ton/ha) as compare to Sclerotium rolfsii inoculated plots (10.28 ton/ha).

    PREVALENCE AND THERAPEUTIC MANAGEMENT OF ANOESTRUS IN CATTLE AT SHERPUR UPAZILA OF BANGLADESH

    Reproductive and production disorders of dairy cattle significantly reduce their productivity which is of great concern of dairy producers worldwide because most reproductive disorders adversely affect the future fertility. Rural people of Bangladesh rear cow mainly for milk production. Milk production is related with parturition. There are many cows suffering from reproductive disturbance like anestrus that delayed conception and parturition. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the factors those are affecting anestrus in dairy cows. The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of anoestrus in cattle in relation with age, seasonal variation and breed along with evaluation of the therapeutic response of different commercially available nutritional drugs against anoestrus in cattle at Sherpur Upazila of Bangladesh. In this investigation, out of 977 dairy cattle, 109 were positive for anoestrus. Active surveillance system was used to collect data from the selected farms through questionnaire survey over a period of one year from January 2018 to December 2018. The investigation revealed that the overall prevalence of anoestrus in cattle was 11.16 %. The highest prevalence of anoestrus was 13.51% found in animals greater than 4 years of age and moderate 10.24% in heifer and lowest 8.90% in animals of 3-4 years age group. It was recorded that 15.8% prevalence was significantly (p<0.05) found higher in rainy season followed by 10.75% in winter season and 7.51% in summer season. Cross bred animals showed significantly (p<0.01) higher 12.61% anoestrus than local breed 8.20%. Animal under the study taken for nutritional therapeutic management reveal that combination therapy showed more effective result than the single one. Results indicated unsatisfactory feeding, housing, and health management practices are the main cause of low fertility of dairy cows. Lack of scientific knowledge, low access to breeding, and health services further contributed to low productivity and fertility.

    VARIETAL CHARACTERIZATION AND YIELD EVALUATION OF SIX RICE HYBRIDS (Oryza sativa L.) GROWN IN BANGLADESH

    A field experiment was conducted with six hybrids cultivated in Bangladesh and two modern check varieties of rice (Oryza sativa L.) at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University experimental farm, to perform varietal characterization and to carry out of yield evaluation based on different morphological characters during the period of January 2006 to May 2006. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In the experiment plant height for BRRI dhan 28 was highest (101.5 cm) and lowest for hybrid Richer (82.5 cm). For days to 50% flowering BRRI dhan 29 required maximum days (116.3 days) and BRRI dhan 28 required lowest days (95 days) but hybrid showed intermediate. For number of effective tillers, Hira showed maximum performance (17.7) and Sonarbangla 1 showed lowest performance (13.3). For days to maturity, Sonarbangla 1 required lowest days (118 days) and BRRI dhan 29, highest days (148 days). In panicle length status, Richer showed maximum performance (27.7 cm) and for BRRI dhan 28 (26 cm) was the lowest. Number of filled grains was the highest for BRRI dhan 29 (163.3) whereas, Jagoron only 118. Number of total grains was highest in BRRI dhan 29 (201.7) and for Jagoron it was only 133.7. On the other hand, for 1000-grain weight, Aloron was the best than others (28.8 g). In biological yield/plant (g), BRRI dhan showed highest yield (49.6 g) and Hira only 18 g. For harvest index, Jagoron was the best (64%) and for BRRI dhan 28 only 38%. For grain yield/plant Aloron expressed highest performance (47.87 g), whereas, BRRI dhan 28 it was only 30.45 g. Grain yield/plot, Aloron was the best than others. For grain yield/ha, Aloron was the best (7.4 t) than others. In yield advantage for plot basis Aloron was the best (54.45%) over BRRI dhan 28 and 24.75% over BRRI dhan 29, respectively. Maturity was also earlier for Aloron than other hybrids. Among the all hybrids, Aloron was the best in terms of grain yield/ha. High heritability was found for days to maturity (99.93%). The maximum variation was found in biological yield per plant (12-81 g). In correlation analysis a highly significant positive association were found for plant height, days to maturity, days to 50% flowering, panicle length and filled grains per panicle with grains/panicle, grain yield/ha.
