    Antibacterial, cytotoxic and antioxidant potential of methanolic extract of phyllanthus acidus L

    The objective of the present study was to evaluate antimicrobial, cytotoxic and antioxidant potential of methanol extract of fruit part of Phyllanthus acidus. Phytochemical screening showed evidence of glycoside, tannin and resin. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated using disc diffusion method against 13 pathogenic bacteria where in higher concentration the extract showed moderate to good zone of inhibition against B. megaterium and B. subtilis also with S. typhi and S. dysenteriae. In case of brine shrimp cytotoxicity assay, showed good result with LC50 value 4.46 μg/ml where as LC90 value was 70.79 μg/ml. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by using total flavonoid content determination assays, total antioxidant capacity, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) free radical assay, reducing power assessment, cupric ion reducing capacity assay (CUPRAC method). The extract showed moderate to good antioxidant activity in a dose dependent manner and found to contain flavonoid compounds. In DPPH radical scavenging assay IC50 value found 2063.42 μg/ml and compared to ascorbic acid with 52 μg/ml. The extract also showed good cupric ion reducing capacity. The results of the present study indicate that the extract possesses moderate to good antioxidant potential.

    Dengue Fever: Assessing Awareness, Current Status, and Future Perspectives – A Comprehensive Survey

    The study examined dengue fever knowledge and views among 100 adults aged 20-40. This extensive poll evaluated gender, education, age, work, dengue familiarity, and personal history. The research intended to investigate public dengue knowledge and experiences to inform focused public health initiatives. A well-designed survey was given to 100 participants from diverse demographics. The poll included 15 relevant questions on dengue awareness, personal experiences, and treatment. Participants from varied backgrounds completed the online survey, bringing useful insights. 88% of individuals showed acquaintance with dengue, indicating a good overall awareness rate. Majority awareness is a good sign of illness comprehension in the studied community. The research found that 24% of the population had dengue, demonstrating its widespread prevalence. This underscores the need for dengue prevention to reduce public health risks. The study shows a variety of treatments, with paracetamol accounting for 66%. Intravenous fluids (34%), platelet transfusions (14%), and a combination of all therapeutic methods (11%) show the variety of dengue treatments. Individualized therapies for distinct demographic groups are highlighted by these findings. Knowing the incidence and treatment options helps create focused public health interventions. We conclude that this study provides a complete overview of dengue disease views among adults aged 20-40. The report praises general awareness but stresses targeted actions for the 12% who lack understanding. Preventive strategies are crucial given the 24% incidence. The different therapeutic options used emphasize the need for tailored treatments, enabling informed and focused public health programming to reduce dengue fever's effect on the assessed community.

    In vitro study on interaction of ketotifen fumarate with metformin hydrochloride

    The present study was designed to study the in vitro interaction of ketotifen fumarate and metformin hydrochloride in aqueous media at different pH values using Job's continuous-variation analysis and Ardon's spectrophotomeric measurement. Job's analysis indicated the formation of 1:1 complex between ketotifen fumarate and metformin hydrochloride at the studied pH values. On the other hand, the values of stability constants (between negative values and 1), as calculated from Ardon's plot, mean that the formation of complex due to interaction between the drugs is readily dissociable. Thus the findings of the study suggest that both drugs can be safely co-administered. However, further studies involving animal models are needed to ascertain the exact nature of interaction between them in vivo.

    Sustainable Grain Protection: Combatting Rice Weevils (Sitophilus oryzae) with Natural Plant Powders

    Grain storage plays a pivotal role in ensuring food security and sustaining agriculture for future generations. However, a wide array of insect pests, including the rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae), pose a significant threat to stored grains. This study was conducted at the Laboratory of the Department of Seed Science and Technology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, from October 2019 to March 2020, to evaluate the efficacy of plant-based powders for managing rice weevils. The experiment was designed using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications and seven treatments. These treatments included five botanical powders—Ocimum tenuiflorum (Tulsi), Azadirachta indica (Neem), Polygonum hydropiper (Biskatali), Nicotiana tabacum (Tobacco), and Lantana camara (Lantana)—applied at three dosage levels: 1 g, 3 g, and 5 g per 100 g of grain. Additionally, a chemical insecticide (Sevin 85 SP @ 0.25%) and an untreated control were included for comparison. Results revealed that neem leaf powder was the most effective, achieving the highest adult insect mortality and the lowest adult emergence. In contrast, Lantana powder exhibited the least efficacy, allowing 94.38% more adult insects to emerge compared to neem powder. Untreated grains experienced a 20% weight loss due to rice weevil infestation after one month of storage, whereas treatment with 5% neem leaf powder reduced weight loss to a mere 0.14%. This reduction was statistically significant compared to all other treatments. These findings suggest that neem leaf powder at 5% is a highly effective, eco-friendly, and safe alternative to chemical insecticides for controlling rice weevils in stored grains.
