Functional spaces inside and around the house are produced according to need over time. Inhabitants construct their houses with locally available resources and knowledge. After devastating disasters houses are delivered as products by the development agencies to quickly cater to the needs of the sufferers. The extreme poor are the receivers and inhabitants of these new houses, which can cause significant changes in the physical and environmental characteristics of the neighborhood. In this regard the building and dwelling values of the inhabitants in relation with these houses may be changed or lost. But these values are otherwise inherent characters of the rural houses in the habitations that are shaped by the aspirations of the dwellers. Methods and Findings: This paper investigates how relief houses serve the needs of the extreme poor after disasters and how these houses gradually blend with the surrounding environment matching with the aspirations of the inhabitants. The methodology followed was observation of the backgrounds of the pre and post disaster situations, focus group discussions, drawings sessions and interviews with the inhabitants, craftsmen and locals, use of secondary sources, and visits to the houses during and after construction to understand the techniques and space value. Conclusions: The present practice of distribution of relief houses without involvement of the owners either in the information sharing or building processes and without understanding owners' perceptions about dwellings, may compromise the compatibility and hence the sustainability of relief houses. Hence, houses may only be used as temporary or transitional shelters to sustain life in the disaster phase, and will not be used as "houses" long term.Item Cost-Based Pricing of Banking Asset: Bangladesh Perspective(School of Business, Independent University,Bangladesh, 2012-07-01) Hossain, Md. Mahabbat; Mizan, A.N.K.,; Rahman, TahminaThe interest rate offered by the banks against their lending and their different influencing factors are matters of immense importance for a growing economy like us. There are several factors that influence the asset price like demand for and supply of fund, cost of collecting and maintaining fund, market competition, etc. The study focuses on the status of different cost components of the asset price of commercial banks of Bangladesh. The paper is shaped to determine the asset price for scheduled commercial banks in Bangladesh and to sketch the inter-group comparison among them. It covers forty three commercial banks grouping in terms of ownership structure. The results show the average asset price of 15.97% and the state owned commercial banks are in good position in terms of cost of doing business and base rate but, they have the highest level of risk premium that squeezing the profit margin.Item Structural strengthening of settlements in the coastal areas of Bangladesh(BRAC University, 2008-09) Rahman, TahminaThe coastal areas of Bangladesh are prone to cyclone disasters for the geographical,economic and environmental background. It is recognized that Bangladesh will be adversely affected by climate change effects with more frequent and intensified cyclones. The loss and damages occurred from such disasters are hard to overcome for a developing country like this. Considering the context mitigation cannot be practical solution,but adaptation may be the feasible option to deal with future disasters. Strengthening the coastal settlements physically to reduce vulnerability can be a means of adaptation solution.This may be achieved by building/repairing dwelling houses with integration of local good practices and implemented engineered techniques, and available sustainable materials; so the damages of assets and physical environment can be reduced.Improving community facilities like road network,community based cyclone shelters, strong schools and hospitals etc, strong houses to act as community refuge can upgrade the quality of the built environment focusing on disaster risk reduction.This approach may be carried with the physical developments of the locality,rather than in the reconstruction phase after every disaster; so the resilience of communities is increased and risks are reduced.
