Item Char dwellers' adaptation to climate change(BRAC University, 2010-09) Saifullah, Nasrul Momen; Rahman, RezaurClimate disaster like flood, river erosion puts a lot of pressure especially on char dweller's whose responsibility is to remain together as family and earn subsistence in day to day life. The main objective of this research in identifying the perception of char dwellers regarding their livelihood option and their capacity to cope with climate change and prioritize the adaptation option for reducing their vulnerability. Kazipur upazila in Sirajganj district was selected as research area due to flood proneness of the area and char dweller's vulnerability to climate changes in agricultural and livestock sectors. A pre tested questionnaire was used to interview 50 respondents to elicit the perception of char dweller's regarding climate change and their preferred adaptation options. An insignificant section of respondent had observation on extra water level rise and appreciation about high temperature. Majority of the respondents mentioned (78%) flood as natural process. To overcome the natural disaster in char areas they change crop patterns with seasons, select time of cultivation after prediction of natural disaster and to survive and earn livelihood they also select occupation with season.They cultivate mostly Boro and Rabi paddy during January to June. Most of the respondents mentioned about their reduced livelihood options, suffer from different types of diseases, earning loss, taking loan with high interest and losing house hold asset as the impacts of natural disaster exacerbated by the erratic behavior of climate. They also mentioned that they need to migrate (90%), loss of their and cattle's food (80%), become poor (80%) and interrupt education (96%) as a result of flood. The respondents mostly used pond and river water (42%) for daily uses.For drinking purposes they also used (40%) tube well. They mentioned the following options to adapt with the climate change. They changed their crop pattern(80%), need place to stay during flood, cyclone etc natural disasters (80%), need high land to preserve livestock (86%), temporary income options needed (70%),need clean water supply (90%). The conducted study tried to capture a snapshot of how climate change is already affecting people living in poverty. Unlike cyclone shelters, very few designated flood shelters exist in Bangladesh; this is because of the difference in the nature of these two phenomena. Flood shelters in three locations along three major rivers were visited, and communities were consulted to address some selected issues regarding the shelters. Three major types of flood shelters were identified for the comparison, which are community shelter, school-cum-shelter, and individual homestead. The range of issues included accessibility to shelters, land availability, protection of lives and livelihoods, basic facilities and services, safety and security of women and children, willingness and priority of potential users, and maintenance and cost-effectiveness. The primary objective of this chapter was to investigate the benefits and shortcomings of the types of flood shelters that are in use and check if any particular type of shelter could be recommended as solution. The findings show that each of the three aforementioned types of flood shelters has their pros and cons, and considering the need and aspiration of communities, one particular type of flood shelter might not be suitable across different geographical and social contexts.Item Flood shelters in Bangladesh: some issues from the user's perspective(© 2015 Elsevier Inc.) Scientific modelling projections indicate that climate change, and changes to climate variability, will increase risks for both countries in the future. Targeting this challenging contemporary agenda, this paper reflects on the lessons learned from a collaborative research project, funded by the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research, which was carried out jointly in the Vietnamese city of Huế and the Bangladeshi city of Satkhira. The focus on secondary cities was intentional as they face unique challenges – a combination of rapid growth and development, adverse climate-related impacts, and in many cases less institutional adaptive capacity than their primary city counterparts. Whilst numerous assessment tool kits already exist, these have typically been developed for rural or natural resource contexts. Therefore, the objective of this action research activity was to develop a flexible suite of participatory assessment tools and methodologies that were refined specifically for the urban context; as well as being easy to use by local practitioners at the city and neighbourhood scales. This paper summarizes the research and stakeholder engagement activity that was carried out before presenting the main findings from each of the case study cities (detailing both climate-related risks and potential adaptation options). This analysis is further extended to include a reflective critique of the assessment process, a comparative analysis of the activity carried out in the two case studies, and the ‘South–South’ learning process that occurred between project partners. Disasters are more frequent and prominent at the present. Nepal is not an exception either. When the disaster strikes, it is poor and marginalized groups that suffer the most. Tharu Community in Nepal is one of the marginalized and vulnerable communities for flood hazards. Hence it is crucial to increase the understanding about the ways which impacts of extreme events can be reduced. To carry our Disaster Risk Reduction approaches, it is first required to understand what community needs. Promotion of new risk reduction options needs to consider local tradition and norms to ensure their acceptability by the local people. In spite of huge investments in the area of disaster management, losses continue to mount. The need to bridge the gap between practice and policy with the recognition of indigenous knowledge and local coping strategies is the must. Hence this paper is an attempt to understand the local practices used by Tharu Community. The research showed that the community people did have knowledge regarding the changing climate and are putting their own efforts in order to cope up. They have their own ways of forecasting and early warning systems. They are using the traditional ways of embankment in order to minimize the adverse effects of flood. However, the indigenous practices which proved to be useful in the past years were not enough to cope with the rapid change in climatic patterns. Need to integrating scientific strategies in these indigenous practices is a must.Item Women's livelihood resilience and adaptation options for climate change(BRAC University, 2008-09) Siddika, Zubyda; Rahman, RezaurClimate disaster. like flood puts a lot of pressure on women whose responsibility is still that of keeping families together and feeding them. tip until now. a gender perspective has been mainly lacking from the international debate on climate change. The main objective of my research is identifying the perception of women regarding their livelihood option and their capacity to cope to climate change and prioritize the adaptation option for reducing their vulnerability. Saturia upazila in Manikganj district is selected as my research area due to flood proneness of the area and women's vulnerability to climate changes in agricultural and livestock sectors. A number of FGDs were carried out to elicit the perception of women regarding climate change and their preferred adaptation options. The threat of climate change as perceived by women includes long term flooding. higher frequency of flooding and sudden flooding. Women are now facing threat of extreme poverty due to loss of income and damages to crops. As a result, their vulnerability is growing with alarming rate due to climate impacts on agricultural sector. Direct and indirect impact of current flooding is imposing negative effects on livestock sector also.The community resilience is to cope with flooding by changing food habits. diversion of income option and depending on credit loan from NGO or local money lenders.Adaptation options are urgently needed for the reducing women's vulnerability. The results of my research are highlighted to understand adverse impact of climate change on women's livelihood options and the draft adaptation menu is selected through bottom up approaches.
