(Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Khulshi, Chattogram-4225, Bangladesh, 2022-11) Rahman, Md. Sohanur
The present study aimed to determine the clinical prevalence of diseases and disorders in cattle and goats at the Upazilla Veterinary Hospital, Rangunia, Chattogram district of Bangladesh from February 2022 to April 2022. A total of 190 clinical cases (127 cattle and 63 goats) were recorded and analyzed. Each clinical case was diagnosed on the basis of general examination, clinical examination, microscopic examination, and using common laboratory techniques. The clinical cases were categorized into three categories based on the treatment required (Medical, Gynaeco-obstetrical, and Surgical). Among the clinical cases, the highest percentage was found for medicinal (cattle 81.10% and goats 82.54%) followed by surgical (cattle 10.24% and goats 15.87%) and gynaeco-obstetrical (cattle 8.66% and goats 1.59%). Within the medical cases, LSD (13.39%) and Mastitis (10.24%) were recorded as the main disease in cattle. PPR (15.87) and CCPP (11.11) were recorded as the main diseases in goats. On the other hand, gynaeco-obstetrical and surgical cases were found as significant. The current investigation could be helpful in designing control measures for prevalent diseases.

Development of energy efficiency design index for inland vessels of Bangladesh
(Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, 2017-08-08) Rahman, Md. Sohanur; Zakaria, Dr. N.M. Golam
According to IMO, ships engaged in international trade in 1996 contributed about 1.8% of the total world’s CO2 emissions which is approximated as 2.7% in 2007 and this percentage could go two or three times higher by 2050 if present trend continues. In order to reduce CO2 emission, Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) at its 62nd session adopted resolution MEPC.203(62) (MEPC, 2011a) which includes amendments to MARPOL Annex VI. It introduces new chapter which intends to improve energy efficiency for ships through a set of technical performance standards. The amendments, which entered into force on 1st January 2013, require that every ship has to comply with the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP). The EEDI is mandatory for all new ships and SEEMP for all ships of 400 GT and above engaged in the international shipping. Several attempts have been made to establish a reliable tool for seagoing vessels with respect to energy efficiency that can be found in various papers & reports. At the same time, many countries around the world are trying to develop some benchmarks for their inland shipping that could be used for assessment of the energy efficiency of inland waterway vessels. In Bangladesh, there are more than 10,000 different types of ship plying all the year round, but performance of these ships in terms of CO2 emission is not known and regulations related to the energy efficiency for inland waterway ships still does not exist. This is why this thesis attempts to assess and develop EEDI for inland vessels of Bangladesh. To assess the present situation of inland class vessels in terms of EEDI, a database has been developed. Using the database, EEDI references lines for different types of inland vessels of Bangladesh have been established. Then the validation of the EEDI reference lines have been done and compared with other countries EEDI reference lines for inland vessels. The impact of design parameters on EEDI for different types of inland vessels of Bangladesh has been evaluated and the present status of existing inland vessels in terms of EEDI has been investigated. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis of inland vessels of Bangladesh has been performed in terms of EEDI considering socio-economic and technical factors in Bangladesh. The results indicate that most of the existing vessels do not meet the current EEDI baseline and so new guideline will be soon necessary for achieving EEDI compliance. Finally some recommendations have been proposed for assessment of the energy efficiency of different types of ship during design stage and trial/ performance test stage so that it can be helpful for Regulatory Authority to introduce some tools for EEDI for the inland shipping in Bangladesh in near future.

    Estrogen Signaling in Alzheimer’s Disease
(Molecular Neurobiology, Springer, 2020-04-15) Uddin, Md. Sahab; Rahman, Md. Motiar; Jakaria, Md.; Rahman, Md. Sohanur; Hossain, Md. Sarwar; Islam, Ariful; Ahmed, Muniruddin; Mathew, Bijo; Omar, Ulfat Mohammed; Barreto, George E.; Ashraf, Ghulam Md
Estrogens play a crucial physiological function in the brain; however, debates exist concerning the role of estrogens in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Women during pre-, peri-, or menopause periods are more susceptible for developing AD, suggesting the connection of sex factors and a decreased estrogen signaling in AD pathogenesis. Yet, the underlying mechanism of estrogen-mediated neuroprotection is unclarified and is complicated by the existence of estrogen-related factors. Consequently, a deeper analysis of estrogen receptor (ER) expression and estrogen-metabolizing enzymes could interpret the importance of estrogen in age-linked cognitive alterations. Previous studies propose that hormone replacement therapy may attenuate AD onset in postmenopausal women, demonstrating that estrogen signaling is important for the development and progression of AD. For example, ERα exerts neuroprotection against AD by maintaining intracellular signaling cascades and study reported reduced expression of ERα in hippocampal neurons of AD patients. Similarly, reduced expression of ERβ in female AD patients has been associated with abnormal function in mitochondria and improved markers of oxidative stress. In this review, we discuss the critical interaction between estrogen signaling and AD. Moreover, we highlight the potential of targeting estrogen-related signaling for therapeutic intervention in AD.

Evaluation of Anti-ulcerant Effect of Oroxylum Indicum in Ulcerative Rat Model at High Dose
(East West University, 12/17/2017) Rahman, Md. Sohanur
The medicinal plants signify a massive basis of potential phytoconstituents that could be valuable as a substitute to allopathic drugs or considered as an analogue in drug development. Oroxyllum indicum is one of the medicinal plants that show anticancer, anti-ulcer, antidysenteric, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activity. Various part of this plant is used in medical purpose. Alkaloids, glycocides, terpinoids, steroids, flavanoids, phenolics, tannins, anthraquinone, Coumarins etc. component has been found in this plant extract that show different therapeutic effects. In this project we investigated the methanolic extract of bark of Oroxylum indicum for anti-ulcer activity. To identify the plant`s therapuetic effects we conducted anti-ulcer and histopathology tests. The anti-ulcer activity of methanol extract of O. indicum bark was evaluated as doses of 200mg/kg and 400 mg/kg p.o while using omeprazole (20mg/kg,p.o) as the standard drug. Ulcer was induced by feeding 25ml/kg of ethanol (0.3M HCL in 60% ethanol). Gastric mucosa from the different groups were examined for ulcers by magnifying lens and scoring ulcer. For these experiments long evans rat were used. O. indicum is highly significant (P< 0.01) in protection of ethanol-induced ulcer, it showed protection of 73% and 76% at doses 200mg/kg/day and 400 mg/kg/day, p.o. respectively. These findings were further supported by the histological study. The investigation suggests that methanolic extract of O. indicum bark possess anti-ulcer activity.
