    Climate Change and It's Impact on Ground Water Resources in Northwest Bangladesh

    Northwest region of Bangladesh is one of the most water stressed region of the country. All the rivers and cannels of the area dry up during the dry season and make the people completely dependent on groundwater. Cultivation of dry season rice which is the lifeline of the livelihood in the most part of the region completely relies of groundwater supply. Scarcity of groundwater for irrigation during the recent years has hampered the agricultural production in the area. Prolonged absence of groundwater within the operating range of shallow tube-wells during the dry season is a growing concern in the area. It is anticipated that climate change will aggravate the situation in near future. A study has been carried out in the present research to identify the causes of groundwater scarcity, estimate the groundwater demand, project the future climate, and to assess the impacts of climate change on groundwater scarcity in the northwest districts of Bangladesh. Long-term groundwater hydrographs are analyzed and correlated with standardized precipitation index to identify the probable causes of groundwater scarcity in the region. Climate models are run with IPCC B2 SRES scenario to project the future change of climate in the region. The projected climatic parameters are then used to estimate the change in irrigation demand in the context of climate change. Finally, the impacts of changing irrigation demand on groundwater level are assessed. The study revealed that recurrent droughts, rapid expansion of groundwater based irrigation and cross-boundary anthropogenic interventions are the main causes of groundwater scarcity in the area. The climate models project an average increase of temperature and rainfall in the region. This will cause an increase of water requirement for land preparation, evapotranspiration and effective precipitation during irrigation period. However, there will be no appreciable change in overall irrigation water requirement as the irrigation period will be substantially shortened by the increased temperature. The study revealed that the climate change will cause an increase in daily use of water for irrigation in the end of this century. As groundwater is the main source of irrigation, higher abstraction rate of groundwater for irrigation will cause a negative impact on groundwater level which in turn will negatively affect the prevailing situation of groundwater scarcity in the area during the dry season.

    DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND PERFORMANCE STUDY OF AN INDIRECT TYPE SOLAR DRYER FOR FOOD PRESERVATION

    Utilizing the most abundant and free of cost energy of the sun to heat up the air and to use that heated air to dry foods is the main goal of this thesis. In order to do this an indirect type forced convection solar dryer is fabricated with components like screen absorber solar collector, drying chamber, fan, etc. The performance of the designed solar dryer is evaluated by carrying drying experiments with potatoes. The temperature inside the drying chamber ranges from 490C to 580C while the ambient temperature ranges from 33 0C to 350C. Initial moisture content in potatoes ranges from 77-79% and the final moisture content obtained about 15.44% in 7 hours. Solar drying of potatoes is carried for forced convection and is compared with open solar drying. The drying rate was 0.1223 kg/hr and 0.1173 kg/hr in solar dryer and open sun drying method respectively. It is seen that applying indirect solar drying not only reduce the drying time, but also higher quality of dried products can be obtained.

    EFFECT OF GREEN TEA POWDER AS AN ALTERNATIVE OF ANTIBIOTIC ON GROWTH PERFORMANCE, MEAT QUALITY AND BLOOD LIPID PROFILE OF BROILER

    Intensive broiler production now a day’s not only means that work involved in feeding, handling, bio-safety and preventive medicine must be extremely efficiently, but also the birds have to be kept healthy for as long as possible. Looking after these poultry populations and making sure that the maximum standards of health are is a huge challenge and that is why growth enhancers and products that improve and preserve the bird's over-all general immune response are essential. A study was conducted with green tea powder to evaluate their effect on broiler growth, meat quality and the development of internal organ. A total of one hundred day old chicks Cobb 500 broiler were purchased from the local hatchery (Nourish Poultry and Hatchery Ltd.) and after seven days of acclimatization chicks were randomly assigned into five treatment group, each group 20 chicks. The groups were control T0 (basal diet), Green tea T1, T2 and T3 (0.5%, 1% and 2% with basal diet), antibiotic (basal+0.1gm/kg oxytetracycline). The birds were reared in wire cages following a completely randomized designed for a period of five weeks under recommended broiler starter, grower and finisher diets. Except the dietary supplementation all rearing conditions and protocol maintained were same for all the groups. The birds were reared for five weeks and final performance parameter was studied in all the groups. Results should that the initial body weights of group To, T1, T2, T3 and T4 day of the experiment were 176.8 ±1, 184.2±1.3, 185.1±1, 190.2±084, 180.2±1.22 gm respectively and after 35th day of experiment final body weight were 1972±3.22, 1992±2.77, 1940±3.17, 1778±3.52, 1918±2.81 gm respectively. The net body weight gains were 1795.2±2.22, 1807.8±1.47, 1754.9±2.17, 1727.8±2.68, 1737.8±1.52 gm respectively and economics of production were analyzed and found the net profit per broiler. Green tea powder significantly decrease feed intake To, T1, T2, T3 and T4 respectively 3058± 4.23, 2971±4.01, 2995±5.57, 3208±4.3 and 3226±5.25 and increase body weight. Carcass weight, breast muscle and thigh muscle significantly difference from the control group but no difference like heart and liver weight. Here the total cholesterol is lower in the group of broiler supplied green tea 0.5% and compare to other group of GT and antibiotic group. Antibiotic resistance is a significant problem and excessive use of antibiotics in human as well as livestock and poultry must be discouraged.

    Evaluation of Antioxidant Activity of Spilanthes calva, Solanum virginianum, Stevia rebaudiana, Ruellia tuberosa and Phytochemical Investigation of Mikania cordata

    Antioxidant assay is widely used by the pharmaceutical industries to screen for antioxidant activity in compound libraries. In present study five plant samples were selected to conduct the antioxidant activity; these are Spilanthes calva, Solanum virginianum, Stevia rebaudiana, Ruellia tuberosa and Mikania cordata. In total phenolic content assay Stevia rebaudiana has the highest amount of phenolic content than other extracts. Spilanthes calva has the least amount of phenolic content among all extracts. DPPH radical activity of methanolic extract of Stevia rebaudiana is good after which is methanolic fraction of Mikania cordata. In Nitric oxide scavenging assay Solanum virginianum is good after which is methanolic extract of Stevia rebaudiana. In reducing power assay Solanum virginianum showed highest level of reducing power where as Stevia rebaudiana and Ruellia tuberosa showed moderate reducing power activity. Among all different fractions of Mikania cordata methanolic fraction showed the highest antioxidant activity. In Column chromatography, I used an open column to purify individual chemical compounds from mixtures of compounds. The methanolic extract of Mikania cordata was subjected to open column and different fractions were collected using four different solvents. Lastly I experimented these fractions to identify their antioxidant property.

    Medical Dilemma in Police Cases and Rights to Health of the Citizens: A Constitutional Analysis

    Bangladesh is a densely populated country. Ensuring health care to every citizen is a challenging issue here. The people of Bangladesh face problems at various stages of health care. Citizens are facing difficulties in accessing emergency medical services in police cases. Public and private hospitals in Bangladesh have emergency departments. Non-government or private hospitals do not provide emergency service in police cases. The procedure under section 154 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898 is FIR, first information report which is also called police case. Victims who are involved in police cases often face difficulties in receiving emergency services from nongovernment hospitals or clinics. They face obstacles in getting services from the nearest hospitals or clinics. Emergency health services should be ensured in emergency departments of nongovernment hospitals in police cases. If it is not done, constitutional and human rights are violated. This paper will review the emergency health care practices in non-government hospitals or clinics in accordance with constitutional aspects.

    Present Renewable Energy Status of Bangladesh

    This paper reports the renewable energy resources and technology practices in Bangladesh. It also presents the present energy scenario, renewable energy resources and future prospect in Bangladesh. For achieving growth and progress in a developing country like Bangladesh, utilization of the available energy sources is of more importance. Bangladesh is possessing with vast renewable energy resources such as solar energy, wind energy, biomass energy etc. People all over the world have been using solar energy mainly for drying from the very beginning of the human race. Use of solar energy more efficiently also started a The wind farms beside the wind farms are capable of generating 1855.25 megawatt of electricity in the range of 7500 meters, wind speed of 5104 horizontal axis and wind speed of 100 meters in height of 7 meters / second. This could reduce energy deficit by 2016, 55.93 percent. Renewable energy sources can provide 11.25% of the total electricity demand by 2020. People all over the world have been using solar energy mainly for drying from the very beginning of the human race. Use of Solar energy more efficiently also started a long time ago. more recently, concern about the environment and possible shortage of conventional fuels prompted researcher all over the world to look for sustainable and renewable resources. Solar Energy is one of the best among a score of other renewable resources. This thesis present the most up-to- data scenario of solar energy and the solar energy based project across the country, Bangladesh and finally, authors try to analyze solar home system per unit cost by a case study

    Solar and wind connected hybrid renewable energy system for small scale applications

    This paper represents a miniature project on hybrid renewable system using solar and wind energy. As Bangladesh is the 8th most populous country in the world, so the demand of electricity is always at peak. Because of this disruption of electricity, houses-medical centers, primary schools in those affected areas suffer from a lot of problems due to lack of proper treatment and other basic needs. To minimize this problem, we came out with an innovative project- idea of building a miniature hybrid renewable energy system based on solar and wind energy.To build this project, we used Arduino as microcontroller chip and for simulating the system we used PROTEUS simulation model. We are also adding an alternative battery as back-up energy supplement for our project in case of either wind or solar is not available/broken or in case of any failure in the main system. We believe the combination of wind, solar and backup battery will be enough to fulfill the demand of electricity which we have shown in the miniature project.

    Isorhamnetin (C16H12O7), a 3'-O-methylated derivative of quercetin from the class of flavonoids, is predominantly present in the leaves and fruits of several plants, many of which have traditionally been employed as remedies due to its diverse therapeutic activities. The objective of this in-depth analysis is to concentrate on Isorhamnetin by addressing its molecular insights as an effective anticancer compound and its synergistic activity with other anticancer drugs. The main contributors to Isorhamnetin's anti-malignant activities at the molecular level have been identified as alterations of a variety of signal transduction processes and transcriptional agents. These include ROS-mediated cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, inhibition of mTOR and P13K pathway, suppression of MEK1, PI3K, NF-κB, and Akt/ERK pathways, and inhibition of Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF)-1α expression. A significant number of in vitro and in vivo research studies have confirmed that it destroys cancerous cells by arresting cell cycle at the G2/M phase and S-phase, down-regulating COX-2 protein expression, PI3K, Akt, mTOR, MEK1, ERKs, and PI3K signaling pathways, and up-regulating apoptosis-induced genes (Casp3, Casp9, and Apaf1), Bax, Caspase-3, P53 gene expression and mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis pathway. Its ability to suppress malignant cells, evidence of synergistic effects, and design of drugs based on nanomedicine are also well supported to treat cancer patients effectively. Together, our findings establish a crucial foundation for understanding Isorhamnetin's underlying anti-cancer mechanism in cancer cells and reinforce the case for the requirement to assess more exact molecular signaling pathways relating to specific cancer and in vivo anti-cancer activities.
