Item A Comprehensive Review of the Current Progress of Chromium Removal Methods from Aqueous Solution(MDPI, 2023-03-08) Islam, Md. Monjurul; Mohana, Anika Amir; Rahman, Md. Aminur; Rahman, Mahbubur; Rahman, Mohammad MahmudurChromium (Cr) exists in aqueous solution as trivalent (Cr3+) and hexavalent (Cr6+) forms. Cr3+ is an essential trace element while Cr6+ is a dangerous and carcinogenic element, which is of great concern globally due to its extensive applications in various industrial processes such as textiles, manufacturing of inks, dyes, paints, and pigments, electroplating, stainless steel, leather, tanning, and wood preservation, among others. Cr3+ in wastewater can be transformed into Cr6+ when it enters the environment. Therefore, research on Cr remediation from water has attracted much attention recently. A number of methods such as adsorption, electrochemical treatment, physico-chemical methods, biological removal, and membrane filtration have been devised for efficient Cr removal from water. This review comprehensively demonstrated the Cr removal technologies in the literature to date. The advantages and disadvantages of Cr removal methods were also described. Future research directions are suggested and provide the application of adsorbents for Cr removal from waters.Item A Graphene Oxide Coated Gold Nanostar Based Sensing Platform for Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Detection of Circulating Tumor DNA(Analytical Methods, 2020) Rahman, Mahbubur; Cui, Daxiang; Zhou, Shukui; Zhang, Amin; Chen, DiA high-performance electrochemical sensing platform inspired by a functional ‘green’ electrochemical reduction pathway was developed to identify and detect circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) of gastric carcinoma in peripheral blood. The assembly of the biosensor, consisting of graphene oxide-wrapped gold nanostars (GO-AuNSs), was fabricated on a glassy carbon electrode using the surface chemistry of ‘layer-by-layer’ modification via an electrochemical route. The electrodeposition of the GO-AuNS nanocomposite on the electrode's surface effectively improved its electrochemical response and enhanced its immobilization pathway. At the same time, it demonstrated the electrochemical phenomena caused by DNA immobilization and hybridization events sans complex labelling or other indicators. The immobilization of the probe DNA occurred due to the π–π (weak) interactions between the GO-AuNS composite and the DNA bases. The hybridization of the probe DNA with ctDNA resulted in the formation of a helix structure, which precipitated the release of the resulting dsDNA from the electrode's surface. The immobilization and hybridization events caused a ‘signal off’ and ‘signal on’ model by respectively decreasing and increasing the signal current. The prepared composite nanostructure and the subsequently modified electrodes were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The electrochemical response of the biosensor was elucidated using Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). A linear relationship was established between the oxidation peak currents (DPV) and the different concentrations of ctDNA within the range of 1.0 × 10−20 M to 1.0 × 10−12 M (R2 = 0.998), with a detection limit (LOD) of 1.0 × 10−20 M (S/N = 3). We evaluated a multicomponent, group-based early child development intervention including behavioural recommendations on responsive stimulation, nutrition, water, sanitation, hygiene, mental health and lead exposure prevention. Methods We conducted a 9-month, parallel, multiarm, clusterrandomised controlled trial in 31 rural villages in Kishoreganj District, Bangladesh. Villages were randomly allocated to: group sessions (‘group’); alternating groups and home visits (‘combined’); or a passive control arm. Sessions were delivered fortnightly by trained community members. The primary outcome was child stimulation (Family Care Indicators); the secondary outcome was child development (Ages and Stages Questionnaire Inventory, ASQi). Other outcomes included dietary diversity, latrine status, use of a child potty, handwashing infrastructure, caregiver mental health and knowledge of lead. Analyses were intention to treat. Data collectors were independent from implementers. Results In July–August 2017, 621 pregnant women and primary caregivers of children<15 months were enrolled (group n=160, combined n=160, control n=301). At endline, immediately following intervention completion (July–August 2018), 574 participants were assessed (group n=144, combined n=149, control n=281). Primary caregivers in both intervention arms participated in more play activities than control caregivers (age-adjusted means: group 4.22, 95% CI 3.97 to 4.47; combined 4.77, 4.60 to 4.96; control 3.24, 3.05 to 3.39), and provided a larger variety of play materials (ageadjusted means: group 3.63, 3.31 to 3.96; combined 3.81, 3.62 to 3.99; control 2.48, 2.34 to 2.59). Compared with the control arm, children in the group arm had higher total ASQi scores (adjusted mean difference in standardised scores: 0.39, 0.15 to 0.64), while in the combined arm scores were not significantly different from the control (0.25, –0.07 to 0.54). Conclusion Our findings suggest that group-based, multicomponent interventions can be effective at improving child development outcomes in rural Bangladesh, and that they have the potential to be delivered at scale.Item A New Experimental Study on Fly Ash, Lime and Dredged Sediment Mixed Block as an Alternative Eco-Friendly Building Materials(Scopus, 2021) Fatema, Kaniz; Rahman, Mahbubur; Sarker, Md. Akhter Hossain; Haque, M. Aminul; Islam, Md. ShihabulFly ash is a byproduct in the thermal power plant station that is produced from combustion of coal and identified as hazardous material. Many global researchers have been attempted over the long years for effective utilization of fly ash a sustainable construction material. In Bangladesh, only 10%-15% fly ash is used in cement manufacturing industry for producing the Portland composite cement (PCC) and concrete industry to be cost effective as well as minimize the costly disposal processes. This paper reported the experimental investigations that were carried out to study the effectiveness of fly ash, lime and dredges sediment on the strength development of block as an alternative building material. Fly ash was partially replaced with four percentages (30%, 35%, 40% and 45%) and again was replaced with other four percentages (25%, 30%, 35% and 40%) including 5% of lime by weight. The study observed the greater strength and water absorption resistant performance on the specimen made by 35% fly ash and 5% lime at 28 days curing age. Amran; Chowdhury, Likson; Bhattacharjee, Sreebash Chandra; Cu, DaxiangIn this study, green coloured Cu(II) and red coloured Fe(III) complexes of pyridine were prepared and the elemental characterization confirmed their composition. The pyridine complexes of Cu(II) and Fe(III) were found very interesting and attractive as potential candidates with antimicrobial activity. Along with this, melting point, molar conductivity measurement, magnetic moment determination, electronic and FTIR spectroscopy were also measured to characterize the prepared complexes. Pyridine acts as monodentate which resulted in formation of square planar and octahedral structure of Cu(II) and Fe(III) complexes, respectively with the nitrogen atom pyridine ring by coordination bond. For antimicrobial activity studies Alternaria alternata, Bacillus cerelus, Botrgodiplodia theobromal, Colletotrichums corcolei, Escherichia coli, Fusarium equiseti, Macrophomina phaseolina, Salmonell typhi and Shigella dysenteriae were used. The prepared complexes showed inhibition against mycelial growth. Although the complexes showed satisfactory inhibition against the tested bacteria and fungi species, both of the complexes were comparatively better against bacteria than fungi compared to ligand.Item Antimicrobial resistance in organisms causing diarrheal disease(1997-01) Sack, R. They have grown enormous due to widespread poverty and inadequate housing finance and land development systems. Governments mostly assisted by the international aid agencies have improved environment, tenure security, income and resources in many settlements. Yet the problems persist as benefits did not multiply due to lack in institutional development, policy implementation, governance, participation etc. Moreover, that the squatters themselves often can bring affordable and sustainable solutions was ignored. This paper discusses the changing approaches to the issues of low-income groups housing worldwide in the above context. Comprising approximately 30% of silk, sericin possesses valuable properties that have been largely overlooked in favor of silk fibroin. This work focuses on innovative extraction methods to convert sericin, typically considered waste, into a valuable resource. By examining these extraction techniques alongside diverse applications, the review aims to enhance the recognition and utilization of silk sericin in research and industry. Various extraction processes where the traditional methods, and some new techniques, are all discussed. In detail, the advantages, limitations, and strategy optimization associated with each extraction method are highlighted. For instance, silk sericin has shown promise as a wound treatment agent, a scaffold for tissue engineering, a carrier for drug delivery, and a biomaterial for regenerative medicine in the field of biomedical science due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and nontoxicity. Additionally, it also finds application in the cosmetic industry, where it is used in skincare products due to its moisturizing, antioxidant, and antiaging properties. Eventually, the challenges, limitations, and prospects of silk sericin are intensively discussed. Study found that after arriving Dhaka most of them experience varieties of culture shock. It causes stress, fatigue, loss of appetite and identity crisis problem that appears difficult to them to adapt with the new environment. However, the students hailed from rural area adopt some strategies to cope with the cultural distance and at last they do adjust with that new culture. The study is carried out to know the extent of culture shock experienced by rural students at different private universities situated at Dhaka city. It also suggests some strategies for the rural students to deal with cultural shock.
