Item BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF DIFFERENT EXTRACTS OF LEAVES OF HERBAL PLANTS ON JUTE AND RICE WITH THEIR CHEMICAL STUDY(HAJEE MOHAMMAD DANESH SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY, DINAJPUR., 2014-06) RANA, MD. SOHEL; Professor Dr. Balaram RoyAn experiment was conducted on biologically active substances in aqueous extracts of leaves of some herbal plants viz.,Ashok (Saracaasoca), Basok (Justicaadhatoda),Arjun (Terminaliaarjuna),Bohera_ (TerminaliabelericaRoxb.), Neem (Azadiractaindica),Bel (Aeglemarmelos),andfor each field crop seeds such as, Rice (Oryzasativa) and Jute (Corcoruscapsulars), with the attempt for chemical investigation on effective plant extract. The aqueous extract of Bohera significantly increased and enhanced germination, growth of shoot length and root length of Rice and Jute seeds compared with control whereasArjune, Beal, Neem, Asok and Basok reduced and delayed germination, growth of shoot length and root length of these same crops.). A significant variation was observed among the treatment in respect of different parameters of rice and jute. In pot experiment, highest germination index in rice was found with extract of bohera (15.71) and in petridish experiment highest germination percentage was observed with the aqueous extract of bohera (97%). While In pot experiment, lowest germination index in rice was found with water (11.41) and in petridish experiment lowest germination percentage was observed with the aqueous extract of arjune (94%).In pot experiment, highest shoot length in rice was found with extract of bohera (77.57 cm) and in petridish experiment highest shoot length was observed with the aqueous extract of arjune (6.56 cm). While In pot experiment, lowest shoot length in rice was found with water (62.04 cm) and in petridish experiment lowest shoot length in rice was found with extract of ashok (5.78 cm). In pot experiment, highest root length was observed with the aqueous extract of bohera(29.83 cm) and in petridish experiment highest root length was observed with the aqueous extract of bashok (5.70 cm). While in pot experiment, lowest germination index in jute was found with water (11.05) and in petridish experiment lowest germination percentage was observed with the aqueous extract of arjune (59%). In pot experiment, highest shoot length in jute was found with extract of bohera (55.35 cm) and in petridish experiment highest shoot length in jute was observed with the aqueous extract of bohera (TerminaliabelericaRoxb.)(12.17 cm). While In pot experiment, lowest shoot length in jute was found with water (30.47 cm) and in petridish experiment lowest shoot length in jute was observed with the aqueous extract of neem (9.81 cm). Again,in pot experiment, highest root length in jute was found with extract of bohera (TerminaliabelericaRoxb.) (28.46 cm) and in petridish experiment highest root length was observed with the aqueous extract of bohera (5.65 cm). While In pot experiment, lowest root length in jute was found with water (14.93 cm) and in petridish experiment lowest root length in jute was observed with the aqueous extract of neem (3.77 cm).The thin layer chromatography (TLC) examination of ethanol extract ofBohera(TerminaliabelericaRoxb.)showed five distinct compounds at Hexane -Ethylacetate (1 : 1 w/v). Five different compounds of Bohera (TerminaliabelericaRoxb.) were separately isolated by TLC, _ structure determination by spectroscopic studies in progress which will be reported in due course.Item EFFECT OF STOCKING DENSITY ON THE GROWTH PERFORMANCES OF SHING (Heteropneustes fossilis) UNDER POLYCULTURE SYSTEM IN SEASONAL MINI PONDS OF NORTHERN REGION OF BANGLADESH(HAJEE MOHAMMAD DANESH SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY, DINAJPUR., 2017-06) RANA, MD. SOHEL; Prof. Dr. Mst. Nahid AkterThe present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of stocking density on the growth performance and water quality parameters of shing (Heteropneustes fossilis) polyculture system at Saidpur and Dimla Upazila of Nilphamari district and Taragonj Upazila of Rangpur district, for a period of 150 days from 30 March 2016 to 30 August 2016. H. fossilis with an average weight of around 3 g were stocked in nine uniform earthen ponds (around 10 decimal) at three different stocking densities of 500 (T1), 600 (T2) and 700 dec-1 (T3) together with Clarias batratus, Oreochromis niloticus and Barbodes gonionotus at a ratio of 5:2:1. All the experimental fish were fed with a commercial feed (Lily fish feed) containing 35.53% protein twice daily at 5-10% body weight of H. fossilis. During the study period, the water quality parameters were evaluated and the results revealed that significantly lowest (P<0.05) total alkalinity, hardness and ammonia content were noted in the lowest stocking density (T1) compared to those that were stocked at highest stocking density (T3). At the end of the feeding trial, weight gain (62.15±0.64g), percent weight gain (2135.46±5.05 %), average daily gain (0.41±0.01 % day-1 ) and SGR (2.04±0.01 % day-1 ) were significantly improved (P<0.05) in the treatment of T1 compared with the other treatment groups. Significantly highest (P<0.05) survival (%) of shing was also found in the treatment of T1 (77.93±0.94%) compared to the remaining treatments. Considering the survival highest gross production (kg dec-1 ) was observed in T2 (26.50±0.65) followed by T1 (25.38±0.55) and T3 (24.43±0.26). The benefit-cost ratio (BCR) result revealed that the best BCR was obtained in the treatment of T1. Therefore, the results of this study indicated that the lowest stocking density (500 fingerlings dec-1 ) seems to have more positive effect on the growth performances of shing (H. fossilis) polyculture in the seasonal farmer’s mini ponds.Item EFFECTS OF CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS, MANURES AND LIME ON THE YIELD OF SUMMER TOMATO IN OLD PIEDMONT PLAIN SOIL(HAJEE MOHAMMAD DANESH SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY, DINAJPUR., 2012-03) RANA, MD. SOHEL; Prof.Dr. Md. Shahadat Hossain KhanAn experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Soil Science, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during March to June, 2011 to evaluate the effect of manures, fertilizers and lime application on summer tomato. The experiment comprised five treatments- T, (cowdung), T (chemical fertilizer), T; (lime), T, (poultry manure) and Ts (control). Application of chemical fertilizer @ 550 kg N/ha, 450 kg P /ha and 250kg K/ha produced the highest yield (35.9 t/ha) of tomato. Between the manures used, the highest yield highest yield (23.35 t/ha) was obtained with the application of 1t /ha poultry manure. Nutrient content in the plant varied remarkably with different treatments. The NPK content of the plant was the maximum with application of chemical fertilizer and the Ca content went to the peak due to the cowdung treatment. SOHELThe experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during the period from November, 2021 to March, 2022 for assessing different varieties of barley in dual purpose influenced by sowing time and cutting management. The three factorial experiment considered two Barley variety,A: BARI Barley-8 and BARI Barley-9 and comprised of three factors viz. factor B: different sowing times (4), S 1 =15th October, S 2 =1st November, S 3 viii =15th November and S 4 =30th November; factor C: Cutting management (4); C 0 =Uncut, C 1 =cutting at 40 DAS, C 2 =cutting at 50 DAS and C 3 =cutting at 60 DAS. This experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. Data were collected on different aspects of growth, yield attributes and economic traits. From the findings of the study it was observed that, among with others growth and yield contributing parameters, highest grain yield (3.35 t/ha) was obtained from the V 2 S 2 C 0 combination (BARI Barley 9, sowing at 1 st November and no cutting). On the other hand, the lowest grain yield (2.08 t/ha) was obtained from the combination of V 1 S 4 C 3 (BARI Barley -8, sowing at 30 th November and cutting at 60 DAS). The highest BCR (2.35) was obtained from the V 2 S 2 C 0 combination (BARI Barley- 9, sowing at 1 st November and cutting at 40 DAS). On the other hand, the lowest BCR (1.81) was obtained from the combination of V 1 S 4 C 3 (BARI Barley-8, sowing at 30 th November and cutting at 60 DAS). From economic point of view, it was apparent that, the combination of V 2 S 2 C 2 combination (BARI Barley-9, sowing at 1 st November and cutting At 50 DAS) treatment was more profitable than rest of the treatment combinations even with lower yield but additional economic return from selling the fodder.Item PHYSIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF WHEAT GENOTYPES UNDER WATER DEFICIT STRESS(HAJEE MOHAMMAD DANESH SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY, DINAJPUR., 2015-06) RANA, MD. SOHEL; Prof. Dr. Md. Abu HasanTo evaluate wheat genotypes under PEG induced water deficit stress during germination and early seedling growth twenty wheat genotypes were tested in three levels of water potential (Tap water, -2 bars and -4 bar) at Crop Physiology and Ecology Laboratory, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during September 2014 to October 2014. Speed of germination as expressed by rate of germination, co-efficient of germination and germination vigor index of all wheat genotypes were delayed with the increment of water stress induced by PEG. Shoot length and root length and seedling dry weight of 10 days old seedlings were found to be affected due to the increment of water stress. But the magnitude of reduction of these parameters with the increment of water stress were not similar to all wheat genotypes. Among the twenty wheat genotypes BARI Gom 25, E 28 and BAW 1170 showing higher Stress Tolerance Index (STI) and BAW 1140 showing the lowest Stress Tolerance Index (STI) based on seedling dry weight both at moderate and higher water deficit stress were selected as tolerant and sensitive genotypes. These four wheat genotypes grown under well water and water deficit stress condition at the research field of Crop Physiology and Ecology Department, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during the period of November 2014 to April 2015 to evaluate the drought sensitivity of wheat genotypes.Water deficit stress tolerant wheat genotypes showed greater stability of flag leaf chlorophyll, greater ability to retain water in leaf, higher level of proline in flag leaf and kernel, higher level of soluble sugar in flag leaf and greater ability to keep the canopy cooler compared to sensitive genotype under water deficit condition. Greater spike dry matter accumulation at peak, longer grain growth duration, better yield components such as spikes m-2and grains spike-1 under water deficit stress contributed to better tolerance of BARI Gom 25, E 28 and BAW 1170. The order of tolerance based on grain yield was BAW 1170 > BARI Gom 25 > E 28 > BAW 1140 and the order of tolerance based on above ground biological yield was BAW 1170 > E 28 > BARI Gom 25 > BAW 1140.Item STUDY OF SURFACE WATER QUALITY DETERMINATION FOR IRRIGATION OF DINAJPUR SADAR UPAZILA, DINAJPUR(HAJEE MOHAMMOD DANESH SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY, DINAJPUR, 2017-12) RANA, MD. SOHEL; Prof. Md. Ruhul AminAn investigation was carried out to assess the suitability of surface water for irrigation purposes. For this reason 44 surface water samples were collected from each union of Dinajpur Sadar Upazila, Dinajpur. Analysis were done including pH, EC, TDS (total dissolved solids), cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ , K+ , Cu2+, Mn2+ and Fe3+) and anions (HCO3 - , SO4 2-, PO4 3- and Cl- ). Several computed variables such as SAR (sodium adsorption ratio), SSP (soluble sodium percentage), hardness (HT), permeability index (PI) and Kelly’s ratio were used to evaluate the suitability of surface water for irrigation purposes. Almost all the water samples were within the recommended pH value for irrigation and had a great impact on irrigation. No sample was excellent, 14 samples were good and 30 samples were permissible for irrigation purposes with respect to electrical conductivity (EC). For total dissolved solids (TDS) all samples were considered as fresh water for irrigation. Based on SAR values, all samples were classed as excellent categories for irrigation. On the basis of Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Mn and Cu content the entire water samples can safely be used for irrigation and would not affect the soils. In the present study, no samples were considered hard while 25 samples were moderately hard and 19 samples were soft for irrigation purposes.
