    EFFECTS OF GROWTH REGULATOR AND FERTILIZER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON THE GROWTH, FLOWERING AND YIELD OF BITTER GOURD (Momordica charantia L.)

    An experiment was conducted to examine the effect of growth regulator (Ripen-15) and fertilizer management practices on the growth, flowering and yield of bitter gourd (Gaj Corolla) during April to July 2006 at the Horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. Four different concentrations of growth regulator (Ripen-15) viz. H1 (100 ppm), H2 (200 ppm), H3 (300 ppm) with control (No growth regulator) and four different fertilizers; F 1 (Cowdung), F2 (Inorganic fertilizer), F (Cowdung + Inorganic fertilizer) and F0 (Control) were applied in the experiment. All the result of experiment had significant influences on all parameters studied i. e. time to first flower, number of male and female flower per plant, ratio of male/female flower, number of node with first flower, number of branches per plant, number of fruits per plant, length of fruit, diameter of fruit. Maximum number of female flower per plant was obtained from H2 (24.4), F3 (21.2) and F3H2 (26.4) cm). Maximum yield (t/ha) was obtained from H2 (18.1 t), F3 (19.7 t) and F3H2 (22.9 t) followed by F:d 11 (20.6 t).

    INFLUENCE OF TRANSPLANTING DATE ON TILLERING PATTERN AND YIELD OF HYBRID RICE VARIETIES IN BORO SEASON

    The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during November 2008 to May 2009 to evaluate the effect of transplanting dates on the tillering pattern and yield of hybrid rice varieties. The experiment comprised of three hybrid rice varieties viz., Aloron, Tia and Taj and three transplanting dates viz., 15 December, 30 December and 15 January. The experiment was laid Out in a split-plot design with transplanting date assigned to the main plot and variety to the subplot. The results showed that the maximum number of tillers hill4 was produced in Tia at all transplanting dates. Plant height at harvest, number of non-bearing tillers hilY', paiiicle length, number of total spikelets panicle4 and number of sterile spikelets panicle1 were the maximum in Taj, whereas Tia produced the maximum number of total and effective tillers hill'. Number of grains panicl&', 1000- grain weight, grain yield, biological yield and harvest index were the highest in Aloron. Plants transplanted on 15 December produced the maximum number of tillers hill4 compared to the plants transplanted on 30 December and 15 January. The values of all characters studied were the highest in 15 December, transplanting except number of non-bearing tillers hill' and number of sterile spikelets panicl&'. The highest grain and straw yields were observed from 15 December transplanting. Aloron produced the highest grain and straw yields compared to Tia in all transplanting dates. Aloron should preferably be transplanted between 15 December and 30 December for better performance.

    TRADE-OFF BETWEEN DESTRUCTIVE FISHING GEARS USE AND HILSA SANCTUARIES MANAGEMENT IN THE MEGHNA RIVER ESTUARY OF BANGLADESH

    This study was conducted to identify the factors that are responsible for widespread use of destructive fishing gears in the Meghna estuary where hilsa sanctuaries were established. Using participatory data collection tools such as individual interviews and focus group discussion, a field work was carried out in four sites located in three districts (Chandpur , Laxmipur and Noakhali )along with Meghna river estuary. The study was conducted in month of July 2016. In field research fifty individual interviews, twelve key informant interviews and four focus group discussions were conducted. The finding of the present study revealed that fishers use different types gears which have some kind of destructive natures, violate the rules of fisheries regulations, of which monofilament net (current jal )is the most prominent gear. Fishers widely use current jal because it is cheaper than conventional gears, easy to operate, higher catch per unit effort to mention a few reasons. The study eliciated a number of factors related to socio economic factors (poverty), political (corruption, political interference ) and environmental factors ( river bank erosion ) are responsible widespread use and unabated continuation of destructive fishing gears in the Meghna river estuary .As a consequence of this practice , the sustainability of estuarine fisheries at stake and dependent fishers become further vulnerable to poverty. More importantly a tradeoff is created where fisheries conservation and livelihoods development seems mutually exclusive. To revert a trade-off and create a win win situation for mitigation of destructive fishing and economic development of dependent fishers, the study calls for effective restriction on destructive gears production and use, comprehensive incentive program for all affected fishers during fishing closures establishment of co-management mechanism for sharing the responsibility and benefits of fisheries management in the Meghna River estuary of Bangladesh
