    ASSESSMENT OF POTATO VARIETIES FOR PROCESSING INDUSTRY IN BANGLADESH

    The experiment was conducted at Laboratory of Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during March to June 2013 to study the assessment of potato varieties for processing industry in Bangladesh. A total of forty potato varieties were analyzed for different physico-chemical attributes and processing quality. On the basis of morphological and physiological traits such as, tuber shape, size, average weight, eye depth, color and general appearance of tuber, ‘Diamant’, ‘Lady Rosetta’, ‘Binella’, ‘Dheera’, ‘Elgar’, ‘Agila’, ‘Sagitta’, ‘Provento’, ‘Cardinal’, ‘Steffi’, ‘Felsina’, ‘Ailsa’, ‘Multa’, ‘Espirit’, ‘Meridian’, ‘Asterix’, ‘Rumba’, ‘Omega’, ‘Caruso’, ‘Amanda’, ‘Svenja’, and ‘Connect’ varieties were found suitable for processing. The specific gravity, dry matter, starch, protein and sugar content were determined to clarify their processing quality. The specific gravity, dry matter, starch, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar and total sugar contents of different potato varieties studied in this experiment were ranged from 1.053 to 1.123, 13.56 to 24.60%, 6.80 to 18.93%, 0.02 to 0.61%, 0.09 to 0.53% and 0.27 to 0.78%, respectively. Among the varieties, ‘Lady Rosetta’, ‘Ailsa’, ‘Caruso’, ‘Forza’, ‘Amanda’, ‘Ludmila’, and ‘Tomensa’, had specific gravity, dry matter and starch content more than 1.07, 20% and 17%, respectively and reducing sugar content less than 0.2%. The variety ‘Lady Rosetta’, ‘Dheera’, ‘Cardinal’, ‘Ailsa’, ‘Tomensa’, ‘Caruso’, ‘Forza’, ‘Amanda’, ‘Ludmila’ and ‘Omega’ were found to be optimum chips color (L*, a*, b*, chroma, hue angle) and crispness compared to those of other varieties. Among the forty varieties, ‘Lady Rosetta’, ‘Ailsa’, ‘Caruso’, ‘Forza’, ‘Amanda’, ‘Ludmila’, and ‘Tomensa’, had optimum morphological and physiological traits; also contain maximum dry matter and starch and minimum reducing sugar which are suitable for processing industry. The information obtained in this study will inform Bangladeshi potato farmers and processors regarding the suitable potato varieties for processing industries.

    ISOLATION, IDENTIFICATION AND ANTIBIOGRAM STUDY OF SALMONELLA SEROVARS FROM DUCK, PIGEON AND QUAIL AT DINAJPUR DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH

    Salmonellosis is a common problem in poultry farms of our country. Indiscriminate use . of antibiotic to control the disease results drug resistance and limits the therapeutic possibilities in the treatment of the disease. A total of 93 samples were collected from liver, spleen and intestine of Duck, Pigeon and Quail; either dead or sick, brought for antibiogram study following isolation of Salmonellae from those birds during the period from December, 2009 to June, 2010 from three upazilla of Dinajpur District of Bangladesh. The collected samples were inoculated to different cultural media(NA, MC agar, EMB agar, Simmons Citrate agar, SS agar, BGA) for the determination of cultural characteristics of the organism.

    SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF CLINICAL COENUROSIS (GID DISEASE) IN A GOAT: A CASE REPORT

    Coenurosis or Gid disease is a parasitic disease of the central nervous system caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Tania multiceps. The aim of the case report was to investigate clinical and morphological findings of a clinical Coenurus cerebralis case in a three year-old female Jamunapari goat presented at Rangpur Sadar Upazilla Veterinary Hospital (UVH), Rangpur, Bangladesh dated on 04 February, 2018. Observable clinical signs of the case were incoordination, irregular gait, failure to hold the head straight, pressing head against obstacles, softening at the base of horn and continuous circling. The disease becomes fatal unless surgical intervention is performed. Therefore, a surgical operation was carried out to remove the cyst from the brain. A brief procedure of the operation is presented here. The operative site was located just behind the right horn which was blocked by local infiltration of 2% lidocaine hydrochloride (Inj. Jasocaine, Jayson Pharmaceuticals Ltd). A half-moon shaped incision was given at the operative site and after trephining the skull, the cyst was removed following taking aseptic preparation for the surgery. Finally, the flaps were closed by simple interrupted sutures using a non-absorbable suture material (nylon). The cyst was characterized by a 4-cm-diameter, fluid-filled and superficial cyst with white clusters of scolices. As a part of post-operative care, fluid therapy (200ml normal saline/animal) and antibiotics, composition of Streptomycin-penicillin (Inj. SP Vet, Square pharmaceuticals Ltd) was administrated (3 ml intramuscularly/animal) for a period of 5 days. The patient was followed up for 10 days. No complications were noted and the goat showed significant clinical improvement after surgical removal of the cyst.

    USEFULNESS OF AGRICULTURAL INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION CENTER (AICC) FOR KNOWLEDGE ACQUISITION

    The objectives of this study were (i) to describe the selected socio-economic characteristics of the farmers, (ii) to determine the farmers’ perceived usefulness of AICC for knowledge acquisition and (iii) to explore the contribution of farmers’ selected characteristics to their perceived usefulness of AICC for knowledge acquisition. Data were collected from randomly selected 120 farmers of three upazilas namely; Sariakandi, Dhunat and Sherpur upazila under Bogura district by using an interview schedule during 15 June to 10 July, 2021. The highest proportion (42.2 percent) of the respondent farmers perceived medium usefulness of Agricultural Information and Communication Center (AICC), while 20.8 percent of them perceived less usefulness and 35 percent of them perceived high usefulness of AICC for knowledge acquisition. Moreover, majority (63 percent) of the respondent farmers perceived medium to high usefulness of AICC. More than one-third proportion (34.3 percent) of the farmers faced high barrier in adopting ICT tools, while 34 percent and 31.7 percent farmers faced low and medium barrier respectively in adopting ICT tools. Findings revealed that training received on ICTs, self-efficacy, use of ICT tools and barriers faced by the farmers in adopting ICT tools significantly contributed to their perceived usefulness of AICC for knowledge acquisition. The study concludes with the recommendation to enable using of ICTs tools to promote the usefulness of AICC for knowledge acquisition.
