    EFFECT OF SUBMERGENCE AT SEEDLING STAGE ON MORPHOLOGICAL AND YIELD ATTRIBUTES OF RICE VARIETIES

    An experiment was conducted during June 10 December. 2013 10 observe the effect of submergence at seedling stage on some of the morphological attributes and yield of some T. aman rice (Orv~a saliva L.) varieties. Four submergence duration. viz .. control (no submergence). six days submergence. ten days submergence and fourteen days submergence and six varieties, viz., BRRI dhanSI, BRR! dhan46, BRR! dhan34. BRR! hybrid dhanl, BRRI hybrid dhan2, ACI hybridl were used for this experiment. The experiment was laid OUI in split plot design with three replications. All parameters were significantly affected by the submergence duration and variety. The highest (8.S0 t ha") grain yield was found from the combination of no submergence with BRRI hybrid dhanl and the lowest (1.20 t ha') from the combination of fourteen days submergence with BRRI dhan34. BRR! dhanSI followed by BRRI hybrid dhan I showed higher submergence tolerance and thus proved as tolerant varieties. On the other hand, BRRI dh,m34 and ACI hybrid I were susceptible to submergence.

    PERFORMANCE OF STEM AMARANTH DURlNG THE EARLY ESTABLISHMENT PERIOD OF MORINGA PLANTATION

    A study was conducted to find out the effect of tree plunting distances on growth. yield and yield aunbuting characters of stern amaranth (AmaranlJllls oleraceus) during the early establishment period of Moringa (Moringa ole/faa) plantation. The study comprising of four treatments which were To (open field condinon). T (15 em away from tree base). T~(30 em away from tree base). T, (45 em 3\\3) from tree base). At han CSt.the maximum plan; height (59 ern) and number of le3f(24.75 cm) of stem amaranth were recorded in control condition whereas the least plant height (49 em) and leaf number (19.75) were recorded in TJ treatment. TIle highcs: leaf length (9.60 em) and leaf breadth (5.37 ern), stem girth (5.71 em), stem length (60.66 em). root length (15.118cm). shoot and root fresh weight (74.10 g and 15.62 g), shoot and root dry weight and yield (14 tIl13) were observed in open field condition. The yield of stem nmnramh in association with Moringn saplings was recorded lower compared to control condition. The yield reduction in treatment. TI (12 tlh(l), Tl (10.2 t/ha) and Tl (10.2 tIIm) were 16.6 %. and 26 %, respectively compared to open field condition. Among agroforcsiry treatments. the highest growth, yicld and yield contributing characters wen: found in plants under TI treatment revealed that stem amaranth shared available plant nutrients from thc pits of Moringa cuttings thus showing its potcnrial to be used in Moringa based agroforesrry farming system during the early singe of ..rstablishmcnt in large-scale.

    SHORT-TERM WATERLOGGING EFFECT ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUNGBEAN

    Waterlogging stress is one of the most atrocious environmental factors restricting the productivity of mungbean in tropical and subtropical region. So a pot experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during April to July 2019 to evaluate the growth and yield attributes of mungbean under waterlogging condition. The experiment comprised of four mungbean varieties, Green Diamond, Crystal, Satin and Celera and two treatments control and waterlogging which was laid out in two factor Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The results showed that both the varieties and waterlogging treatment had significant influence on growth and yield traits of mungbean plant. Celera showed the highest (37.04 cm) plant height in both control and waterlogging condition (31.06 cm). Among the four varieties Crystal created the highest SPAD value (50.07 units) than other varieties. After waterlogging, new leaves initiated by Green Diamond in 39 DAS followed by Celera. Number of leaves was higher (11) in Green Diamond in control and it became 4.66 in waterlogging. Celera produced higher pod per plant both in control and waterlogging. The highest yield per plant containing variety was Celera both in control (5.30 g) and (4.19 g) in waterlogging. Whereas the lowest under control in Green Diamond (3.80 g) and under waterlogging in Crystal (1.02 g). The relative yield indicated that Cerela is the most waterlogging tolerant (0.791), followed by Satin (0.563), Green Diamond (0.563) and Crystal (0.196).

    SOIL SALINITY SURVEY IN RELATION TO PERFORMANCE OF TOMA TO IN SATKHIRA DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH

    Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to sea level rise. Both water and soil salinity along the coast is increasing with the rise in sea level, destroying normal characteristics of coastal soil and water. A soil survey was conducted in Satkhira district on March to July 2009 and soils samples were collected from 30 sites at 0.5 km distance and 0-50 ern, 50-100 cm and 100-150 ern depth and analyzed to determine the effect of salinity on soil properties. A field experiment was conducted from December 2009 10 March 2010 in Satkhira district to observe the yield performance of eight different tomato varieties for growing under saline area by RCBD with three replications. In the saline soils of Satkhira pH value of the surface horizon was slightly lower (5.37) than those of the subsoil (7.70). Cation exchange capacity (CEC) and organic mailer was medium to high status. nutrient deficiencies of total nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium were quite dominant but sulphur was high (15.0 to 20 mg/IOO kg). Exchangeable sodium. potassium. calcium and magnesi urn were in high level. The dominant water soluble cations were Na '. Ca", Mg'+ and K' and anions CI· and sol. In the field experiment, each tomato varieties showed a special criterion among others. variety BARI Tomato? gave the highest yield (100.33 t/ha) whereas BAR I Tomato I4 showed the highest size (17.0 cm) among others. The highest number of fruits/plant was recorded from BARI Tomato I I (212.33) which was cherry type and the lowest number was recorded from BARI Tomato 4(23.66). So. soil salinity is the most dominant limiting factor in saline regions. especially during the dry season and cropping intensity wi II be increased by adopting proper soil and water management practices with the introduction of salt-tolerant tomato varieties in saline areas.
