Item Effects of age and live weight on meat yield characteristics of Giribaz squab(Faculty of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2016-01) Hasan, MK; Mahbub, ASM; Hasnath, MR; Beg, MAH; Ahmed, T.A total of 60 Giribaz squabs of different ages (25-35 days) were purchased, slaughtered and allowed to bleed properly. After dissection the parts of squab were weighed separately and recorded. It was found that dressing percentage, total meat, breast meat, dark meat, wing meat, thigh meat, drumstick meat, total bone, wing bone, thigh bone, drumstick bone and the ratio of breast and dark meat (breast: dark meat) were 53.88, 18.97, 10.45, 8.54, 4.05, 2.41, 2.08, 10.41, 3.72 0.76, 0.88, and 1.22%, respectively. The average length of neck, wing bone, thigh bone, drumstick bone, elementary tract and shank were 5.62, 8.67, 3.37, 5.05, 84.03, and 2.85cm, respectively. On the other hand, the average weight of head, neck, heart, liver, gizzard, spleen, abdominal fat, back, skin and shank were 4.94, 1.79, 1.09, 3.14, 2.20, 0.10, 0.80, 3.31, 9.49, and 1.84%, respectively. Dressing percentage, total meat, breast meat, dark meat were linearly increased (P<0.01) and gizzard and liver weight were linearly decreased (P<0.01) with the increase of age and live weight. Ratio of breast and dark meat, total bone, drumstick bone, head, neck, elementary tract length, back and shank weight did not maintain (P>0.05) any relation with the increase of age and live weight. Despite smaller in size (229.50g), the dressing percentage of squab was fairly higher (53.88%) and relative ratio of breast and dark meat usually higher (1.22), because the growth of pectoral muscle (flying muscle) appeared to be very fast growing in early life of squab. Further study is needed among different breeds and varieties of pigeon available in Bangladesh for better performance.Item Effects of Separate Sex Growing on Performance and Metaboli c Disorders of Broil ers(Faculty of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2016-01) Beg, MAH; Islam, KBM Saiful; Aftabuzzaman, M; Mahbub, ASMA study was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Poultry Farm in order to explore the effects of separate sex rearing of broiler on production performance and the occurrence of metabolic diseases. A total of 405 Cobb500 birds were divided in 3 treatments (male, female and unsexed) according to their sex with 3 replications in each treatment where each replication had 45 birds. They were provided the same feed and water adlibitum for 28 days. Initial body weight, temperature, humidity, feed intake, weekly body weight, death record, final live weight and dressing percent of broiler were recorded. Abdominal fat, liver, heart, kidney, spleen etc. were collected and weighed from the birds to correlate to the occurrence of metabolic disorders. The study revealed that male birds consumed more feed and produced higher body weight. The FCR (1.45) in male birds differed significantly than that (1.61) in female birds and also showed better dressing percentage (71.21%) than in female group (69.67%) or unsexed group (70.08%). Abdominal fat deposition was higher in female (20.35 ±1.94 gm) in comparison to those in male (16.45 ±1.50 gm) or unsexed (18.48 ±2.04 gm) birds. Abdominal fat deposition was highly correlated (r = 0.83) to fatty liver diseases in female birds in comparison to that of male (r=0.42). Mortality rate was higher in female birds (2.2%) than that in male (1.4%). All these findings together revealed that in separate sex growing male chicken showed better performance in terms of more production and less vulnerability to metabolic diseases.
