K.; Khatun, A.; Hossain, M. S.; Mondal, R.An experiment was conducted in the Genetic Engineering Laboratory of the Cytogenetics Department. Bangladesh .lute Research Institute (B.lRI), Dhaka. Cotyledons (with attached petioles) of mesta (Hibiscus snbdnrifJa L.) were used as explant to investigate its in vitro regeneration potentiality. Seed germination percentage was found to be better on clinical cotton supported MS liquid medium (90%) compared to agarsupported MS solidified medium (81.33%). Among the combinations, MS medium supplemented by BAP (2.0 mgll) and IAA (0.5 mgl1) showed the highest (58.33%) shoot regeneration. Shoot regeneration was not observed in MS media without hormone (MSO) and also when more than 4mglL BAP with 0.5 rng/l IAA combination was used. MS medium without hormone (MSO) showed good response for root formation from regenerated shoots of mesta and root development occurred very nicely. The regenerated plantlets of mesta subsequently survived in soil.Item Medicinal plants and formulations used by the Soren clan of the Santal Tribe in Rajshahi district, Bangladesh for treatment of various ailments(African Journals Online (AJOL), 2012) Rahmatullah, M; Hasan, A.; Parvin, W.; Moniruzzaman, M; Khatun, A.; Khatun, Z.; Jahan, F. I.; Jahan, R.The Santals form the largest tribal community in northern Bangladesh reside primarily in Rajshahi and Rangpur Divisions, where they live in the districts of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, and Panchagarh. Although they are fast losing their traditional medicinal practices, they still have their own medicinal practitioners who rely mostly on medicinal plants for treatment of a variety of ailments. The traditional medicinal practices vary quite extensively between the twelve clans of the Santals. The objective of the present study was to conduct an ethnomedicinal survey amongst the Soren clan of the Santal community residing in two villages of Tanor Santal Para in Rajshahi district to collect information on their use of medicinal plants. Interviews were conducted of the two existing Santal traditional medicinal practitioners of the Soren clan with the help of a semi-structured questionnaire and using the guided field-walk method. Plant specimens as pointed out by the practitioners were collected and pressed on the field and identification completed at the Bangladesh National Herbarium. Information on 53 medicinal plants distributed into 32 families was obtained in this survey. Ailments treated by these plants included skin disorders, respiratory tract disorders, gastro-intestinal disorders, sexual dysfunctions, sexually transmitted diseases, diabetes, helminthiasis, pain, urinary problems, filariasis, leprosy, tuberculosis, epilepsy, snake bite, enlarged heart, and paralysis. The medicinal plants used by the Santals merit further scientific studies for some of their formulations are used to treat diseases like diabetes, paralysis, enlarged heart, tuberculosis, and filariasis for which modern medicine has no known cure or medicines have developed resistant vectors. A.The chevon is an animal source protein that is delicious, nutritious and a very well-known food for all. This study aimed to determine the prevalence as well as the antibiotic sensitivity of Staphylococcus aureus in chevon sold at the different wet markets in Dhaka City. A total of 120 samples of raw chevon were 4* collected from some selected areas. The cultural characteristics, staining and biochemical properties were used to isolate and identify the S. aureus bacteria. The highest and lowest Total Viable Count (TVC) in the supplied sample were log 10 9.22 CFU/gm and log 9.04 CFU/gm, respectively. The overall prevalence of S. aureus in Dhaka City was 47.5%. The highest prevalence was recorded at BNP Bazar (65%) of the Dhaka City. Isolates were investigated for antibiotic sensitivity profile using a Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion assay against five common antibiotics used in goats. The S. aureus showed the highest sensitivity to gentamicin (57.9%), followed by ciprofloxacin (56.14%), and the highest resistance pattern was shown against amoxicillin (100%), followed by ampicillin (92.98%), and tetracycline (63.15%). These bacterial contaminations in the chevon may be mitigated following proper hygienic management, proper boiling or cooking, and public health awareness.
