Item A gender perspective of climate change and disaster management practices of a cyclone affected coastal community(2017) Tabassum, Tahera; Kabir, Md. HumayunMen and women are, of course, not homogenous groups, and their experiences, lifestyles, and geographic and socioeconomic conditions shape their worldviews and proclivities; cognizance of these types of tendencies can be powerful knowledge when innovating solutions. Climate change is a threat that is both globally dispersed and intensely localized. It is a global challenge that burdens all of humanity, but not equally. The world’s poor, the majority of whom are women, are encumbered disproportionately. In 2009, the United Nations Population Fund took a deep look at the relationship between women and climate change in its annual report, concluding that women “are among the most vulnerable to climate change, partly because in many countries, they make up the larger share of the agricultural work force and partly because they tend to have access to fewer income-earning opportunities.” Moreover, the brunt of housework and family-care often falls on women, limiting their ability to quickly adapt to extreme and sudden weather-related disasters — statistically, the report said, natural disasters tend to kill more women than men. The distinct impacts of climate change on men and women are exacerbated in settings that are also affected by violent conflict, political instability, and economic strife. As the world struggles to grapple with rapid onset disasters as well as respond to slower degradation caused by climate change, it is critical to ensure that the plight of women is firmly on the agenda of concerns, and that women – from different backgrounds – are able to lead in negotiations and participate in the design and implementation of programs. Climate change efforts provide an important opportunity to engage women as active agents of resilience building rather than passive recipients of adaptation support. Women are disproportionately vulnerable to the impacts of extreme events, and this must be addressed when supporting communities’ ability to adapt. Perhaps more importantly, however, climate change provides an opportunity for positive social transformation on gender equity. Humayun; Kohno, RyujiThe high time resolution characteristic of ultra-wideband (UWB) signals enables the potential of accurate ranging in line-of-sight (LOS) propagation. However, Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation can cause a large error in source geolocation. In order to mitigate NLOS errors this paper proposes and investigates a noble approach which makes a hybrid combination of fingerprinting (FP) positioning and an iterative Time of Arrival (TOA) real time positioning method. Moreover, to reduce the computational complexities in FP method, we introduce a unique idea for the arrangement of reference tags to create fingerprinting database. Each arrangement of reference tags resembles a shape of polygon, which size dominates the computational complexities of FP as well as proposed hybrid method. By analyzing the tradeoff between positioning accuracies and computational complexities in proposed method we determine the appropriate size of polygon to reduce the computational complexity while maintaining a higher positioning accuracy. Finally, in comparison with FP only positioning method the proposed hybrid method yields better performance and is much more robust in NLOS condition with improved positioning accuracy in indoor environment.Item A Hybrid Positioning Approach by UWB Radio Communication Systems for Non Line-Of-Sight Conditions(IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM 2011), Houston, Texas, USA, 2012-01-19) Kabir, Md. Humayun; Kohno, RyujiRecently, Impulse Radio Ultra Wideband (IR-UWB) signaling has become popular for providing precise location accuracy for device localization in the indoor environment due to its large bandwidth and high time resolution while performing ultra-high capacity of transmission. Received signal's time-of-arrival (TOA) based real time ranging system is widely used for UWB positioning. However, Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation can cause a large error in source localization. Hence, mitigating NLOS errors is a great challenge for a positioning system. In order to mitigate NLOS errors this paper proposes and investigated a noble approach which makes a hybrid combination of fingerprinting (FP) positioning and an iterative Time of Arrival (TOA) real time positioning method. The proposed hybrid method follows an iterative process in which the initial values are estimated from FP positioning. We show that the computational complexity of the hybrid method can be significantly reduced when more appropriate initial values are considered. Finally, in comparison with TOA only, FP only and another iterative-TOA positioning methods the proposed hybrid method yields better performance and much more robust in NLOS error mitigation with improved positioning accuracy in various channel conditions.Item A Hybrid TOA-Fingerprinting Based Localization of Mobile Nodes Using UWB Signaling for Non Line-Of-Sight Conditions(Sensors, MDPI AG; Basel, Switzerland, 2012-08-10) Kabir, Md. Humayun; Kohno, RyujiRecently, Impulse Radio Ultra Wideband (IR-UWB) signaling has become popular for providing precise location accuracy for mobile and wireless sensor node localization in the indoor environment due to its large bandwidth and high time resolution while providing ultra-high transmission capacity. However, the Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) error mitigation has considerable importance in localization of wireless nodes. In order to mitigate NLOS errors in indoor localization this paper proposes and investigates a novel approach which creates a hybrid combination of channel impulse response (CIR)-based fingerprinting (FP) positioning and an iterative Time of Arrival (TOA) real time positioning method using Ultra Wideband (UWB) signaling. Besides, to reduce the calculation complexities in FP method, this paper also introduces a unique idea for the arrangement of reference nodes (or tags) to create a fingerprinting database. The simulation results confirm that the proposed hybrid method yields better positioning accuracies and is much more robust in NLOS error mitigation than TOA only and FP only and a conventional iterative positioning method.Item A Survey Analysis and Model Development for Internet of Things (IoT) System for City buildings: Dhaka City, Bangladesh Perspective(IEEE TENCON 2018 (TENCON is a flagship conference of IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific)), 2019-02-28) Rahman, Md Samin; Kabir, Md. HumayunConfirmed by CDMP’s Urban Risk Reduction Specialists, there are 3, 26, 000 (appx.) buildings (including residential, commercial, residential cum commercial, commercial cum residential, non-residential, government etc.) in Dhaka City. One of the steps for digitalization of a city is introducing smart building management, which refers to a cyber-physical system automating building operations. Among many operations the research inspection here is focused on the safety, water and energy management of city building. Three types of buildings are considered – residential, non-residential, and corporate. Another important intention of this research is to conduct this survey, which will reflect customer demand, market, building management problems and probable solutions. One Hundred and one numbers of buildings of Dhaka City had been surveyed. It is found that a system which cost around 10,000-20,000 BDT (120 US Dollar – 239 US Dollar), with energy, water, safety management service (mainly focusing on safety) integrating with rent management will have greater acceptance to the consumers, while initiating IoT building management service. With this survey also some interesting ideas, demand points are revealed which can be valuable in case of IoT deployment in City areas of Bangladesh.Item Android Based Platform Connecting Farmers and Consumers(Daffodil International University, 2019-05) Rabbi, Fazley; Kabir, Md. The main aim of this project is to build an android application that helps the farmer and consumer to maintain communication with each other. Another aim is it can be useful for an extinct middle man and it will help to maintain the same food price hole of the country. In this platform, any farmer whole of the country can add his foods and they can run his own business from home. Farmer will get the actual price of the product what they expected after cultivation. Also, the consumers will be benefited they will buy pure foods at a reasonable price. In this way, the middle man will totally extinct from our country. Farmers and consumers will build up a strong relationship. The whole of the country products price will remain the same all of the season. This platform is a win-win platform for farmers, consumers and also for our country. The best part of the platform is farmers will think he is not only a farmer he is also a businessman.Item Assessing the effectiveness of structural and non-structural flood mitigation measures of Bushrod island’s unplanned settlements(BRAC University, 2023-07) Kamara, Abu Sumaila; Kabir, Md. Humayun; Ferdaus, MuhammadFlooding poses a significant threat to the inhabitants of unplanned settlements on Bushrod Island in Monrovia, Liberia. Although flood risk there are mitigation strategies are in place, their effectiveness in reducing the impacts of flooding remains unclear. This study aims to assess the efficacy of both structural and non-structural flood risk mitigation measures in minimizing the dangers and effects of flooding on Bushrod Island. The research objectives are to identify and categorize flood hazards, evaluate the effectiveness of flood mitigation measures, and propose improvements to address specific flood risks. By answering research questions about flood hazards, the measures’ effectiveness, influencing factors, and potential improvements, this study will provide valuable insights into flood risk reduction strategies for similar contexts elsewhere. This research sheds light on how well these precautions work to reduce flood risks in different contexts. The research incorporates couple of mixed tools and techniques such as primary and secondary data, and qualitative and quantitative analysis. The research also used survey and interview as data collection tools using the combination of purposive and stratified random sampling. The nature of the research is analytical and the purpose is centered on fundamental research tactics while the research design is conclusive. Since the long-term effectiveness of the available mitigation measures in the study area remain uncertain, the study will focus on identifying the hazard risks, vulnerabilities, and assess the immediate impact of flood mitigation measures, but also investigate the durability of both structural and non-structural measures over time which is essential to understanding their continued efficacy. Additionally, understanding the extent and nature of flood damage is essential to comprehensively evaluate the impact of the assessed measures. It will help in determining the economic losses, and social implications faced by the communities during flood events. This data is vital for decision-makers and stakeholders to prioritize investment in appropriate flood risk reduction strategies. By addressing these research gaps, the researcher can offer more comprehensive and practical recommendations for improving the existing and new flood risk reduction strategies in the study area and potentially inform flood risk management practices in other similar contexts nationally.Item Assessing the Performance of a Hybrid Geolocation Algorithm Integrating FP and TOA Techniques Across Diverse Environmental Conditions(Tuijin Jishu/Journal of Propulsion Technology, 2023-10-30) Kabir, Md. SaidurThis paper presents a validation study of indoor geolocation accuracies using a hybrid approach that combines fingerprinting (FP) and time of arrival (TOA) techniques. The investigation focuses on three dense environments, examining the influence of furniture density and multipath components on geolocation accuracy, particularly in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. The results indicate that geolocation performance improves in denser environments with higher furniture density due to increased multipath components. Additionally, optimizing the hybrid method with a polygon size of 50 cm and sampling rate of 80 GHz leads to further accuracy enhancements. These findings underscore the significance of furniture density and demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid method in addressing NLOS challenges. HumayunThe communication of potential students with a university department is performed manually and it is a very time-consuming procedure. The opportunity to communicate with on a one-toone basis is highly valued. However, with many hundreds of applications each year, one-toone conversations are not feasible in most cases. The communication will require a member of academic staff to expend several hours to find suitable answers and contact each student. It would be useful to reduce his costs and time. The project aims to reduce the burden on the head of information officer or a support manager, and potentially other users, by developing a convincing chatbot. A suitable algorithm must be devised to search through the set of data and find a potential answer. The program then replies to the user and provides a relevant weblink if the user is not satisfied by the answer. Furthermore, a web interface is provided for both users and an administrator. The achievements of the project can be summarized as follows. To prepare the background of the project a literature review was undertaken, together with an investigation of existing tools, and consultation with the head of information officer or customer support manager. The requirements of the system were established and a range of algorithms and tools were investigated, including keyword and template matching. An algorithm that combines keyword matching with string similarity has been developed. A usable system using the proposed algorithm has been implemented. The system was evaluated by keeping logs of questions and answers and by feedback received by potential students and visitor that used it. A pre-trained application can deliver high quality information service to the user and the database can be designed on basis of frequently asked questions from the students and visitor. In the current days of technology, A chatbot application can build conversation with the customer or can make customer relationship by chatting. A customer, students or visitor can easily get any kind of specific answer of any question by just asking through the chat, and a computer program (known as chatbot) can deliver the answer or do the job for hundreds even thousands of visitors at a time.Item Evaluation of an Anglo-Centric ELT Textbook in Bangladeshi Context: A Case Study(CRP, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2011-12) Kabir, Md. Since the learner’s background knowledge i.e. ‘schema’ is an issue of paramount importance in ELT, in this study our attempt is to assess and justify the suitability of the Anglo-centric ELT textbooks titled Foundation English Course (FEC) Book-I&II which is designed to teach the students of REC (Remedial English Course) programmed at IIUC (International Islamic University Chittagong).Item Exploring Hazard Risks and People’s Adjustment: A Study in the Downstream of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project(BRAC University, 2022-04) Khan, Md Fahim Azraf; Kabir, Md. HumayunThe development induced hazards (i.e. erosion) has become a matter of great concern in recent years. The Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project is going to be one of the biggest infrastructures in Bangladesh and is estimated to increase the annual growth by more than 1.0 per cent. But large development projects have some demerits too. Due to this massive construction process, the normal channel of the river has been altered and it has resulted significant erosion in the downstream of the Padma river. So a study has been undertaken to understand the hazard risk of the Uria Village which is situated at the downstream of the Padma river in Louhajang upazila. To investigate the changed social and economic status and the coping strategies of the people living in the area, a questionnaire survey has been done on 113 households. Moreover, change of land use pattern of the area has been determined using Landset. Finally, an overall comparison has been done on the present livelihood, economic status and condition of the houses of the households with the state before beginning of the construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge. It has been found that, water bodies have been decreased to a great extent but build up area has been increased almost 8 times between 2000 and 2020. The agricultural lands also decreased from 91134.8 acres to 15335.34 acres in the mentioned period. Due to erosions specially in the downstrem, these lands have been engulfed by the Padma river. On the other hand, 74 out of 100 people lost their lands where they used to live or cultivate. Only 15% of them have been able to find new jobs and livelihood. To adopt with the condition, 66% respondents are planning to relocate themselves to nearby villages or cities like Holudia, Madaripur, Goalibanda, Srinagar etc. which are situated in comparatively highlands. It has been recommended to provide small interest-free loans to the affected people from the administration so that they can adopted with the shocks of disasters and build new temporary houses to live in. Along the shore of the Padma, plantation of this Vetiver grass can mitigate the rate of erosion as well. Finally, after the end of construction, the current location of the Shimula Ghat should be changed as it has accelerated the rate of the erosion in the downstream.Item High accuracy tag tracking system based on TDOA in medical network(Int'l Symp. on Medical Information and Communication Technology (ISMICT 2012), San Diego, CA, USA, 2012-05-21) Enda, Koji; Kabir, Md. This method consists of step-by-step compensation on the basis of two approaches considering a reference position that is estimated from data affected by NLOS delay. The first consideration consists of determining NLOS delays for each node, performing compensation to alleviate the effect on line of sight (LOS) nodes through a step-by-step compensation for the NLOS delay. The second consideration consists of compensating the effect of NLOS delay on the position determined on the basis of node distribution and geometrical relations of the estimated positions. Using these considerations, we show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional method in terms of estimation accuracy. The new influx of around 400,000 people took shelter in peninsula of Teknaf and Ukhia of Cox`s Bazar. These arrivals have caused humanitarian crisis which is categorized as a one of global growing ``refugee`` crisis. The massive scale of refugee populations has led to life saving needs. Although Rohingya crisis has received huge global attention, efforts to continue to mobilize and sustain resources to cater to basic needs have people. In a changing humanitarian landscape, government with it humanitarian partners including UN, Red Cross and NGOs are striving for response coordination architecture to operate in complex humanitarian setting. Evidence shows that parallel coordination structures do not benefit agencies to work in coordinated fashion rather they operate in isolation. Thus, overall coordination architecture is yet to form to guide an interoperable and coordinated response strategy. On the same note, working with own mandates, organizations, including government become unable to deliver integrated assistance and therefore it does not gain expected impact. This paper represents the issues of Rohingya crisis and the existing response coordination situation, problems, process and findings through literature review, key informant interviews (KII) of people directly involved in the complex operation and focus group discussions. The objectives of the study to analyze the coordination structure of humanitarian organizations in Bangladesh, in case of Rohingya crisis and compare with international standard. This paper will also find out the challenges and advantages of Cluster approach.Item Hybrid Real-Time and Preset Processing for Indoor Radio Geo-Location in Dense Multipath Environments(Int'l J. of Communications, Network and System Sciences (IJCNS), SCIRP, 2013-01) Kabir, Md. Humayun; Sugimoto, Chika; Kohno, RyujiThe existence of various geo-location applications and their accuracy requirements enhance the necessities for suitable processing techniques to solve the indoor geo-location problems. Since, Impulse Radio Ultra-Wideband (IR-UWB) signals have very short duration pulses; they can provide very accurate ranging and geo-location capability in short range indoor radio propagation environments. Our research puts emphasis on indoor geo-location using UWB signaling considering both of non line-of-sight (NLOS) and LOS radio propagation environments. In this paper, we introduce and investigate a noble approach which makes a hybrid combination of Channel Impulse Response (CIR)-based finger-printing (FP) method with polygonal arrangement of reference nodes (or tags) and an iterative-TOA based real-time geo-location method using UWB signaling for wireless ad hoc networks. The proposed hybrid approach assures significant improvement in positioning accuracy compared to TOA only, FP only and conventional iterative-TOA geo-location methods by mitigating NLOS errors effectively in the indoor environment. Besides, this hybrid approach minimizes the calculation complexity of the FP method while maintaining improved geo-location accuracy in the dense multipath propagation environment.Item Improving the Efficiency of Solar Photovoltaic Power System(Daffodil International University, 2020-10-31) Kabir, Md. HumayunOrganic photovoltaic has been developed for more than 30 years, however, within the last decade the research field gained considerable in momentum. The amount of solar energy lighting up Earth's land mass every year is nearly 3,000 times the total amount of annual human energy use. But to compete with energy from fossil fuels, photovoltaic devices must convert sunlight to electricity with a certain measure of efficiency. For polymer-based organic photovoltaic cells, which are far less expensive to manufacture than silicon-based solar cells, scientists have long believed that the key to high efficiencies rests in the purity of the polymer/organic cell's two domains -- acceptor and donor. The basic principle of organic solar cells is to place layer(s) of organic electronic material between two metallic conductors of two different work functions. This difference of work function sets up an electric field within the organic layer(s) which when absorbs light, causes the excited electrons to be pushed towards positive electrode and holes towards negative electrode. This thesis has been based on an optimized two layer organic solar cell which aims to increase the photon absorption by increasing the interface area between donor and acceptor levels. This report summarizes the latest advances in the interfacial layers for bi-layer OSCs (including bulk hetero-junction photovoltaic cells. Finally, a brief summary and some perspectives about the current challenges and opportunities have been presented about this interesting area of research.Item Incidence of Red Rot Disease of Sugarcane in Thakurgaon and Rajshahi Areas with Especial Reference to Ecological Factors(University of Rajshahi, 2006) Kabir, Md. Humayun; Rahman, M. Shamsur; Alam, M. ShahA set of biotic and abiotic habitat factors that determine the distribution, growth and reproduction of species. Physiochemical I. e. abiotic factors are fundamentally important. They vary from place to place. For each abiotic factor, a species possesses an amount of tolerance within which it can grow and reproduce. Different sugarcane varieties display different sets of tolerance ranges and these are reflected in their forms and functions i.e., in their vegetative organs. That is why ecologists pay greater attention to the vegetative parts of plants than to their floral ones, as the floral parts remain unchanged even under diverse habitat conditions. According to Moore et al. (1986) any adaptation of sugarcane to any environment induces morphological, anatomical, pathological and physiological changes. According to Stocker (1960) the structural modifications occur in nature due to the scarcity of water. Water and light greatly influence the external and internal structure of sugarcane as well as their physiological process. Sugarcane varieties that prefer wet/or moist habitats are hygrophytes and those that can adjust 1.0 drier habitats are xerophytes. Most of the xerophyte’s arc· sun loving and are known as helophytes, while most of the hygrophytes are shade loving and are known as schizophytes. Species without any Eco phenic and/or ecotype variations are adapted only to a fixed combination of environmental factors and have very narrow ecological amplitude, while those with much variation can fit into a wide range of habitat conditions and hence have wide ecological amplitude (Daubenmire, 1959). Wild uncultivated-sugarcane appears to have broad ecological amplitude. About 300000 species of plants have so far been identified in our planet, while tens of thousands more remain undiscovered. Moreover, to reduce the computational complexities in FP method, we introduce a unique idea for the arrangement of reference tags to create fingerprinting database. In this paper, the fingerprinting method is utilized to track mobile devices in a specific indoor area. Fingerprinting, also known as pattern matching or database correlation method (DCM), needs a powerful received signal strength indication (RSSI) database which helps to make signal strength maps as well as used for matching. The nearest point of the mobile device is specified by the Kth nearest neighbor algorithm (KNN). Real-time received signals are matched with predefined array of received signal strength indication (RSSI) for different locations to get the actual postion of the device or person. Experimental results show that the average localization error is less than 1 m which is better than many conventional approaches where error is higher.
