    ADOPTION OF SELECTED TRANSPLANTED AMAN TECHNOLOGIES BY THE FARMERS

    The main purpose of the study was to determine the extent of adoption of selected T. Aman technologies and to explore its relationship with the selected characteristics of the farmers. The study was conducted in two villages of Pingna union under Sarishabari upazilla of Jamalpur district. Data were collected from randomly selected 130 T. Aman growers during 12'h August to 18'" October, 2006. Findings revealed that overwhelming majority (80 %) of the farmers were found to have medium to high adoption while only 20 % farmers belonged to low adoption of selected T. Aman technologies. Data also revealed that among eight selected characteristics, education, farm size, annual family income, organizational participation and extension media contact were found to have positive significant relationships with their adoption of selected T. Aman technologies. Other variables namely age, commercialization and cosmopolitness had no signiticant relationship with their adoption of selected T. Aman technologies.

    Factors Influencing Milk Production among the Dairy Farms of Savar Sub-District, Dhaka, Bangladesh

    Milk production among the dairy farms is one of the important sources of income for the farmers. However, many reasons may influence milk production. In this aspect, the objective of the study was to assess the determinants or factors influence milk production in the dairy farm of Savar sub-district under Dhaka district of Bangladesh. A sample of 218 dairy farmers was randomly selected for data collection. The survey was conducted using a pre-tested structured interview schedule among the respondents. The data was analyzed using percentage, mean, frequency, standard deviation, and regression analysis. Majority of the farmers (96.8%) had up to 70 liters of milk production in their farm with an average of 18 liters. The statistical analysis showed that credit, total cow, milking cow, and livestock income significantly influences on the amount of milk produced in the farm. The Department of Livestock Service (DLS) and other related Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) may arrange more livestock income related programs for the dairy farmers focused on milk. Initiative like providing credit facilities either interest free or lower rate of interest to purchase milking cow may help the farmers to improve their livelihood through more milk production.

    IMC to boost up the selling process of DBL Ceramics Limited

    The purpose of this paper is to find out the proper marketing tools and generate new insights into wider applications of IMC tools to boost up the marketing activities and selling process of DBL Ceramic Ltd. Information and data used for this report are gathered mainly by secondary research methods based on corporate websites, annual reports form DBL Ceramics Ltd and data form analytic tools. Primary research used are based on my observations and meetings with senior official. DBL Ceramic Ltd. is one of the local largest ceramic tiles manufacturers in Bangladesh where my internship was completed successfully. The internship report is about “Uses of the Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) to boost up the selling process of DBL Ceramics Ltd.” This report includes the background of DBL Ceramic Ltd. and its activities including its history and the management team. Besides, the mission, vision and objectives of the organization and trends of turnover rates, products of the organization are briefly focused too. The main purpose of this report was to discuss the use of all integrated marketing communication tools for all advertising and marketing communications and maintaining good customer relationship processes. Discussions about how the company lives and works are repeated throughout the report, demonstrating how we maintain good relationships with our internal and external partners. Finally, I also discussed my perception of limitations, scope, etc., from my internship. Some recommendations were also made for the limitations and difficulties encountered during the trip. All data in the report has been collected and introduced through experience, previous research, and reporting. In the absence of previous reports or concentrates identified on the topic of this report, much of the data was collected by interviewing representatives face-to-face at work. My traveling colleague was very supportive and supportive, gave me a consistent format for my report and was able to complete it on schedule.

    Present Status and Mitigation Approaches of Arsenic in the Environment of Bangladesh: A Critical Review

    Arsenic is a toxic metalloid that enters the environment through natural and anthropogenic sources. A small amount of arsenic remains in living organisms, but its exposure at elevated concentrations is hazardous and thus creates a toxic effect. Evidence has shown that the level of arsenic in Bangladeshi foodstuffs is higher than the permissible limits set by the World Health Organization and other regulatory bodies in Bangladesh. Previously published reports show that the transport and abundance of arsenic create potential threats to the fresh and processed products of Bangladesh. However, monitoring and assessment of arsenic toxicity in the exposure sources are lacking. Although severe contamination of arsenic in the environmental matrices and numerous foodstuffs has been summarized, a perilous appraisal concerning trophic transfer and arsenic exposure through environmental matrices in Bangladesh has not yet been accomplished. This review critically discussed arsenic pollution, exposure toxicity, unexploited research gaps and prevailing legislation for pollution control. This study also highlighted the potential transfer of arsenic within the food webs, and sustainable strategies for arsenic pollution control to enhance food safety as a vital issue in Bangladesh. Furthermore, the current review urgently recommends formulating a conceptual policy framework to combat arsenic contamination in Bangladesh’s environment.

    Rural Women's Attitude and Involvement in Post--Harvest Processing of Vegetables

    Traditionally women are mostly engaged in household-based income generating activities. Post-harvest processing of vegetables has recently gained much attention due to its value addition utilities. Therefore, in this study, we tried to understand women farmers’ attitudes towards and involvement in, post-harvest processing of vegetables. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a pre-tested questionnaire from 212 respondents in Dhaka district of Bangladesh. The data were interpreted with descriptive statistics, multivariate regression analysis and a logit model. About 71% of rural women had a favorable attitude towards post-harvest processing; 43% of them were involved in the post-harvest processing of vegetables. Women's attitude towards post-harvest processing of vegetables was influenced by age, education, household size, and their frequency to travel outside of their social system. Their involvement in post-harvest processing of vegetables was affected by education, group membership, media contact and time spent in home management. ‘Gender disparity in earnings’ was the most severe barrier to expanding women's involvement in vegetable processing, followed by ‘lack of land ownership status’, ‘spouse dominance’ and ‘social norms and tradition’. Motivating women in income-generating activities and introducing advanced yet low-cost and less-labour intensive technologies would enable them to participate in the post-harvest processing of vegetables.

    Transformation of Cropping Pattern through the Intervention of Potato Variety ACI Alu-10 (Valencia) to Ensure Food Security in Bangladesh

    To transform the cropping pattern or add a new potato variety like ACI Alu-10 (Valencia) to the existing cropping pattern, it is essential to have adequate farmers’ knowledge and a favorable attitude towards that variety. In addition, the better performance of the variety in comparison to other market leader varieties is also necessary. Against such a backdrop, the present study determined farmers’ knowledge and attitude towards the potato variety (Valencia) and compare the selling price, yield, harvesting period, and cost of production of this variety with other potato varieties. Data were collected from randomly selected 139 farmers of Bogura and Joypurhat districts. A face-to-face interview followed by a structured questionnaire were used to collect data. The survey revealed that the Valencia users had higher knowledge and a more favorable attitude towards the variety than the non-Valencia users. The t-test showed a significant difference between Valencia users and non-Valencia users regarding the price, harvesting period, and cost of production, indicating that Valencia has a shorter harvesting period, higher selling price, and lower production cost. On the other hand, the result indicates that 62 days Valencia yield was almost near to the 74 days of other check potato varieties yield. By getting early and higher cash through selling Valencia, farmers can utilize the amount to improve their livelihood and solve problems. The findings may be helpful to policymakers in the decision to include Valencia in the current cropping pattern to increase potato production and food security in Bangladesh.
