    A COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF COCONUT OIL EXTRACTION MACHINE AND ANALYSIS OF COCONUT OIL

    Coconut oil is very familiar and useful for human civilization. Now-a-days many coconut oil extraction procedures are used. All these process are adapted in large industries. In this project the main concern was to produce coconut oil by using simple extraction process and ensure its perfect quality. In modern coconut oil extraction machine, only copra is used to produce oil, but in this machine, all kinds of coconut can be used to produce oil except baby coconut. In this thesis paper, the design procedure, production process and quality of the coconut oil are described clearly. The construction of coconut oil extraction machine is very simple, small in size and low cost. It is made of stainless steel, mild steel bar and plain sheet. Coconut meat is used as a raw material. In every process coconut meat is heated inside the machine. But here in this machine moisture of coconut meat is removed by using direct sunlight. That is why the nutrition value of produced coconut oil is better. Applications of coconut oil are versatile. It is used for cooking, health care, direct fuel mixed with diesel and producing biofuel. It is also used as a lubricant in the textile industry. Special feature of this extracting machine is that anyone can operate and produce coconut oil easily by this machine. The paper also contains a comparison study of exhaust gases produced by using pure diesel and 15% coconut oil mixed with diesel.

    Analysis of socio-economic condition of environmental refugees in Dhaka

    Bangladesh and natural disaster are closely related to each other because of the geographical location of it. Natural disaster, affected people by these disasters and migration of these people to urban areas or mega city is not unknown to the country. Environmental degradation and natural disasters play a contributing role in affecting population movement. People are forced to move from rural to urban areas. Some experts declare that number of incidents, that cause people to leave their houses and fields due to natural disasters, is increasing rapidly and they perceive this as a global serious issue. The work explores the subject of environmental refugees as a significant group of migrants, includes definition of the term, explanation of main reasons for fleeing the people from their habitats and the socio economic condition of the environmental refugees before and after the migration. There is a huge difference between their present and previous socio-economic conditions. Along with their migration, so many things happen such as difficulties in the local economy and population pressure on the city. This research is an attempt to find out the comparison between the previous and present socio economic conditions of the environmental refuges and to suggest some guidelines to control the migration and to improve their conditions.

    CHANGES IN FISH POPULATION REGARDING FISH LARVAL ABUNDANCE IN RESPONSE TO ACIDIFICATION AT THE BAKKHALI RIVER, COX'S BAZAR COAST, BANGLADESH

    The uptake of atmospheric CO2 by the oceans since the beginning of the industrial revolution is considered to be a significant threat to marine ecosystems due to the resulting carbonate chemistry changes. This study tried to evaluate the level of acidity and the larval abundance of the Bakkhali River in Cox's Bazar. Fish larval abundance fluctuates directly in response to the rising acidity of river water. The potential impact of rising atmospheric CO2 levels on fish larvae caused by ocean acidification is receiving a lot of attention. This research was conducted in the Bakkhali River estuary with monthly sampling from January to December 2021. The key ocean acidification factor, pCO2, ranged from 19.3642 to 360.6499 μatm. The pH of the water was always found to be alkaline and varied between 8.0 and 8.8 (8.267±0.2146). The range of the DIC (mol/kg) concentration was 0.0005 to 0.001 with a mean of 0.00094686±0.00038532. The aragonite ranges from 0.86174819 to 3.4318 with mean of 2.2771±0.7552 and the calcite ranges from 1.3987 to 5.2121 with a mean of 3.5397±1.1109. Throughout the study, 555 larvae were recorded from the study region. The maximum and minimum number of fish larvae was 109 in August and 11 in February, respectively. The levels of pCO2 and fish larvae were inversely related. A decline in the quantity of fish larvae had been associated with rising pCO2 levels and decreasing seawater pH. Fish larvae had significant positive relationships with pH (R2 =0.5290, p<0.05), and fish larvae had significant negative relationships with pCO2 (R2 =0.2056, p<0.05). The growth and survival of marine organisms during their larval stages could be hampered by ocean acidification. The early life stage was substantially more sensitive to elevated pCO2 induced mortality than the post larval stage. The results showed that a higher pCO2 may negative impact on larval fish survival. It is still entirely unknown whether wild populations of marine species are capable of adapting to elevated pCO2. This finding will stimulate interest in fish biology research in regions where fish larvae are particularly vulnerable to acidification.

    The School of Applied Sciences and Technology, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, organized a Conference on Engineering Education, Research and Innovation (CERIE), which held on January 11-13, 2011. The organization of the conference was a result of whole-hearted and devoted labor of the teachers, officers and employees of all the departments under the school. This conference provided a platform for exchanging ideas, knowledge, experiences and research works in various areas of engineering and technology among academicians, scientists, technologists and engineers. Around 200 research papers were presented in different sessions.     Impact of cash based interventions in livelihood recovery of waterlogging affected community in Satkhira district

    The coastal districts of SWB have been experiencing waterlogging problem since the early 1980s. Natural drainage systems over a large part of this area were totally disrupted, as a result, with most of the effective natural water collection and drainage system blocked by the polders. The situation has aggravated greatly since 2011 as a result of multi-dimensional causes accrued form both natural and manmade disaster.In 2013, this was about 28% of the land area in the affected Upazilas and remained waterlogged for more than 8 months. Long term inundation prevents the cultivation of most of the crops normally cultivated in this area resulting in very significant economic loss to the households. The main affected groups due to water logging in these Upazilas are landless day laborers, small and marginal farmers, who faced major losses in terms of livelihoods or source of income (from land or labor). Small and marginal farmers have lost their livelihoods and casual day labors have lost employment opportunity, consequently fall in chronic food insecurity. Affected people had to rely on negative coping strategies such as selling productive assets, spending previous savings, migration and borrowing for survival. Humanitarian intervention has started in 2012 by International NGOs and UN agencies. As markets were functional, Cash Based Intervention (CBI) was carried out to support the affected population to meet the immediate food security need and livelihoods recovery. Different survey and project reports say that total 44,210 most vulnerable households affected by waterlogging received BDT 465, 934,000 in three districts up to December 2015. This study aims to evaluate if theseCBIs helped the beneficiary households for recovery of the livelihoods and contributed to enhance their resilience against flood and waterlogging. The study used 7 parameters to understand if the beneficiaries managed to recover the livelihoods they lost due to waterlogging. These are – 1) Changes in occupation and livelihoods strategies 2) Adoption of alternative and diversified livelihoods options 3) Recuperation of household assets 4) Increase of total asset value 5) Reduction of burden of debt 6) Increased monthly income 7) Improvement of community infrastructures. Waterlogging affected households shifted from traditional occupations like agriculture farming and casual day labors to new occupation and livelihoods strategies. Number of main occupation increased from 4 types (before waterlogging) to 8in 2016. All of the respondent households now have at least 2 livelihoods options and out of them 44% currently have 3 livelihoods options. Beneficiaries managed to regain almost all productive assets except cultivable land. Average number of cows and goats surpassed the number before waterlogging. Total value of assets stood at BDT 123, 442 and surpassed the asset value of 2010 by BDT 32,094. Burden of loan per household reduced from BDT 13,917 to BDT 7,966. Monthly income has increased in average BDT 2800 compared to the monthly income before waterlogging. Therefore, CBIs found very much effective in recovery of livelihoods of the waterlogging affected marginalized households and built their resilience to cope with the waterlogging condition. It also contributed a lot by reducing future risk of waterlogging through rehabilitation of the community infrastructures and making them functional.
