C.; Parvin, S.; Correll, Ray; Naidu, RaviArsenic contamination in groundwater in Bangladesh has become an additional concern vis-à-vis its use for irrigation purposes. Even if arsenic-safe drinking-water is assured, the question of irrigating soils with arsenic-laden groundwater will continue for years to come. Immediate attention should be given to assess the possibility of accumulating arsenic in soils through irrigation-water and its subsequent entry into the food-chain through various food crops and fodders. With this possibility in mind, arsenic content of 2,500 water, soil and vegetable samples from arsenic-affected and arsenic-unaffected areas were analyzed during 1999-2004. Other sources of foods and fodders were also analyzed. Irrigating a rice field with groundwater containing 0.55 mg/L of arsenic with a water requirement of 1,000 mm results in an estimated addition of 5.5 kg of arsenic per ha per annum. Concentration of arsenic as high as 80 mg per kg of soil was found in an area receiving arsenic-contaminated irrigation. A comparison of results from affected and unaffected areas revealed that some commonly-grown vegetables, which would usually be suitable as good sources of nourishment, accumulate substantially- elevated amounts of arsenic. For example, more than 150 mg/kg of arsenic has been found to be accumulated in arum (kochu) vegetable. Implications of arsenic ingested in vegetables and other food materials are discussed in the paper.Item Comparison of arsenic accumulation by two ferns, pteris vittata and nephrodium molle(Dhaka Univ. Accumulation of As has been found to be higher in BRRI-dhan 29 than in BRRIdhan 28 grown under similar condition. The accumulation of a few heavy metals also indicated that balanced fertilization does not play any significant role in their accumulation. On the other hand, excess P over the required amount could help decrease accumulation of As in an upland crop of kangkong. When amaranthus was grown with balanced fertilizer, half that of balanced and one and a half times more than the balanced fertilizer, the balanced fertilizer could keep the accumulation of the heavy metals in the minimum. It seems that cropping system has a role to play in the accumulation of As and heavy metals when they are fertilized. M.The BR 29 rice variety was cultivated in potted soil (Aeric Endoaquept) for four consecutive seasons, using As-contaminated water in the dry (boro) season and fresh water in the monsoon (aman), in order to observe the effect of alternate irrigation on the As loading in the soil and on its transfer to rice. Soil arsenic content increased significantly (p = 0.003 for the first boro season and 0.013 for the second boro season) after each boro season, whereas the soil As was found to have decreased sig-nificantly (p < 0.001) at the end of both of the aman seasons. The soil As was found to be significantly reduced (p < 0.001) at the end of the fourth cropping season (boro–aman–boro–aman). At the end of the fourth cycle, the arsenic loading was found to be almost unchanged. Arsenic in rice grains was detected only when As-contaminated water was used during the boro season. Moreover, the As accumulation in rice grains was lower in the second boro season of the four cropping season cycles.Item Sewage sludge as soil ameliorator(Bangladesh J.
