Currency duplication is now a common occurrence due to the advancement of printing and scanning technology. Many note detection systems are present in banks but they are very costly. In this paper, we are proposing an accurate and consistent technique for fake banknote recognition. We are developing an image processing algorithm which will extract different currency features and compare it with features of original note image. As an output, information about whether the note image is original or duplicate is given. Three main features of paper currencies has been implemented which are micro-printing, water-mark, and ultraviolet lines using OCR (Optical Character recognition), Face Recognition and Canny Edge & Hough transformation algorithm of Matlab. We apply these techniques in order to find an algorithm which will easily be applicable and will be efficient in terms of cost, reliability and accuracy. Along with 1000taka note has been tested for checking authenticity hence making our techniques more appropriate for users.

A Proposed Bi-LSTM Method to Fake News Detection
(Daffodil International University, 2022-04-22) Islam, Taminul; Hosen, MD Alamin; Mony, Akhi; Hasan, MD Touhid; Jahan, Israt; Kundu, Arindom
Recent years have seen an explosion in social media usage, allowing people to connect with others. Since the appearance of platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, such platforms influence how we speak, think, and behave. This problem negatively undermines confidence in content because of the existence of fake news. For instance, false news was a determining factor in influencing the outcome of the U.S. presidential election and other sites. Because this information is so harmful, it is essential to make sure we have the necessary tools to detect and resist it. We applied Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) to determine if the news is false or real in order to showcase this study. A number of foreign websites and newspapers were used for data collection. After creating & running the model, the work achieved 84% model accuracy and 62.0 F1-macro scores with training data.

A Study Of Business To Business (B2b) Website In Bangladesh
(Daffodil International University, 2013-01-01) Jahan, Israt
Web-enabled business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce enhances inter-organizational coordination and results in transaction cost savings and competitive sourcing opportunities for the buyer organization. However, there are more than a dozen Business to Business (B2B) websites running online business in Bangladesh by selling requested items and providing to different locations in home and or aboard. But no study has been done to identify features of B2B websites, explain characteristics of B2B websites in Bangladesh. Additionally, there is no such framework to represent B2B eCommerce in Bangladesh. This study examined important features of B2B websites and interviewed the buyers and manufacturer/seller to assess how much benefit distributes among whole seller to buyer. The general objective of this study is to provide with an overview of business to business (B2B) web portal in Bangladesh and develop a framework of B2B eCommerce. The objectives and the nature of the study lead to utilize descriptive research method that employs qualitative and quantitative techniques. For this study, data were collected from three B2B websites, manufacturer/ whole seller and retailers (buyer/client) of one of the three websites. The results revealed twelve important features (for example registration, product information, interaction facility etc) of the B2B websites that increased user friendliness of the websites. The data received from buyer and seller suggested that there are three categories of buyers (high, medium, and low) on the basis of purchase order. The buyers found that online buying of products through a website has several advantages such as it saves time and money, make the business easy and hassle free, and can be organized with fewer number of staff while the seller sees that it is very easy and convenient to run business online than the traditional style as it does not require too much establishment cost, managing staff. It also saves time and money for doing business. On the basis of the research findings a framework of B2B eCommerce is developed in Bangladesh context. Further research should emphasize on the large number of data and websites for better understanding of the B2B characteristics in Bangladesh.

(Scopus, 2024) Nirob, Md. Asraful Sharker; Deeya, Ikteshad Binte Kalam; Rukhsara, Lamia; Rabeya, Tapasy; Jahan, Israt
Sugarcane, an essential crop for sugar production and biofuel, is susceptible to diseases that greatly affect its yield and quality. To address this, we propose a hybrid deep learning model combining ResNet152 and MobileNetV3Large to accurately classify sugarcane leaf diseases. Our method involves careful dataset preparation and data augmentation to enhance model robustness. The hybrid model leverages the strengths of fine-tuned pre-trained networks with custom layers, achieving an impressive accuracy of 98.19%, outperforming other models such as DenseNet121 (76.09%) and NASNetLarge (82.65%). The dataset includes images from ten sugarcane leaf disease classes, including healthy leaves. Thorough metrics, such as recall, precision, and F1-score, along with visualizations of training and validation results, emphasize the model's effectiveness. This hybrid model shows significant potential for agricultural diagnostics. Future work will focus on fine-tuning and exploring ensemble methods to improve accuracy and generalization across various agricultural environments

An Existential Reading of Family Ties
(East West University, 1/1/2015) Jahan, Israt
Examining different characters of Family Ties (Lispector, 1972), the present paper aims at demonstrating Clarice Lispector’s projection of ties at various different levels often starting with family ties, stretching between individuals, objects, and natural world and then untying or losing previously existing ties. The paper highlights the attention she pays to the anxiety concerning all the disturbances of the body and the mind that has been so long denied. Through the research it is shown how her different characters respond to the cultivation of self, and bestows prominent attention to self-respect resulting from self-doubt. Her experimentations with female characters are not confined to the conflict of male and female; rather it continues with multifarious themes which find their abode in her collection of thirteen short stories entitled Lacos de Familia (Family Ties) where she writes about human suffering and failure, the disarray of humanity, human’s total awareness of inevitable alienation and the pressing need to overcome danger, and the most forcefully of all, encountering ultimate nothingness. Influenced by existentialist writers, Lispector illuminates the conflict between public and private self, and magnifies the terror upon realizing the failure of language to communicate; that results into the use of different tools of language to find a rescue (Pontiero, 1972. p. 134). Though the existential struggle of the characters consists of series of paradoxes with no solution, the paper will discuss the steps they have taken and the time they have passed through. An IoT-Based System to Measure Methane and Carbon Dioxide Emissions Along with Temperature and Humidity in Urban Areas
(Springer, 2022-10-14) Afroz, Umme Sanzida; Khan, Md. Rafidul Hasan; Rahman, Md. Sadekur; Jahan, Israt
The increment of the world population is the main reason behind the emission of greenhouse gasses like methane and carbon dioxide which affect temperature and humidity. To identify this problem, we implemented an IoT system using an ESP32 microcontroller and the necessary sensor to measure data from the outdoor environment and deploy our system to monitor the outdoor temperature and humidity quality due to increasing the level of methane and carbon dioxide. In the next step, the measured data was sent into the ThingSpeak cloud server and later was made available for visualization. This research work seeks to estimate the level of methane and carbon dioxide emissions which has a great impact on increasing temperature and humidity and also highlights some complications to integrating modern sensors based on the emergence of the Internet of things (IoT) concept. However, the data preserved in the cloud server can be used for further analysis to find other impacts of gasses in our environment.

An Optimized Machine Learning Framework for Heart Disease Prediction: Achieving a New State-of-the-Art in Accuracy and Explainability
(Daffodil International University, 2025-11-20) Jahan, Israt
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the major cause of mortality across the globe and requires predictive models that are highly precise, clinically transparent to ensure easyintegrationwithin the healthcare systems. The antecedent State-of-the-Art (SOTA) error on the target data was 92.0% (Random Forest). This thesis builds a machine learning model on top of an optimized framework, to exceed the current SOTA benchmark. The consolidated Heart Failure Prediction dataset was found to be analyzed comparatively on five different models (Random Forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, SVC, and MLP Classifier). IQR-based Outlier Removal and Standard Scaling of all the numeric features were some of the fundamental preprocessing steps involved in the methodology. The data was divided into 80 per cent of training and 20 per cent of test data. The Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) Classifier has a test set accuracy of 92.93% creating a new State-of-the-Art (SOTA) in this predictive task that is 0.93 points higher than the former benchmark. Most importantly, the Explainable AI (XAI) part, which has been verified through SHAP analysis of the probability output of the MLP, proves that the model decisions are indeed presupposed by clinically significant aspects: ST_Slope (the most significant impact) and Oldpeak (Asymptomatic Chest Pain). This study provides a clear, high-fidelity predictive architecture, which satisfies the most important requirement of reliable, explainable decision-making in Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS), and clearly and effectively improves the SOTA in predictive accuracy of heart diseases.

Sterculia foetida, also known as jangli badam in Bangladesh, is a traditionally used plant that has pharmacological activities. A qualitative phytochemical analysis was performed to assess the metabolites in a methanolic extract of S. foetida seeds (MESF), and the cytotoxic, thrombolytic, anti-arthritics, analgesic, and antipyretic activities were examined using in vitro, in vivo, and in silico experiments. Quantitative studies were performed through gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis. The brine shrimp lethality bioassays and clot lysis were performed to investigate the cytotoxic and thrombolytic activities, respectively. The anti-arthritics activity was assessed using the albumin denaturation assay. Analgesic activity was determined using the acetic acidinduced writhing test and the formalin-induced paw-licking test. A molecular docking study was performed, and an online tool was used to perform ADME/T (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion/toxicity) and PASS (Prediction of Activity Spectra for Substances). GC-MS analysis identified 29 compounds in MESF, consisting primarily of phenols, terpenoids, esters, and other organic compounds. MESF showed moderate cytotoxic activity against brine shrimp and significant thrombolytic and anti-arthritics activities compared with the relative standards. The extract also showed a dose-dependent and significant analgesic and antipyretic activities. Docking studies showed that 1-azuleneethanol, acetate returned the best scores for the tested enzymes. These findings suggested that MESF represents a potent source of thrombolytic, anti-arthritic, analgesic, antipyretic agents with moderate cytotoxic effects.

Concomitant conditions and associated diseases in diabetic patients
(Chattogram Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Khulshi,Chattogram, 2023-03) Jahan, Israt
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder. It imposes a social and economic burden, with increased manifolds globally with high morbidity and mortality in patients of both developed and developing countries. It causes various types of complications (e.g., macro- and micro-vascular) if it remains uncontrolled. The purpose of the study was to determine factors (e.g.: age, gender, duration of diabetes, frequency of checking clinical parameters related to diabetes) and associated diseases or disease conditions (e.g.: diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy) in DM patients visited for medical services at Chattogram Diabetic General Hospital, Chattogram, Bangladesh. This was a cross-sectional study, and a total of 400 patients’ data were considered for the present study. Data was collected by using a pretested questionnaire with the written consent of the participants. The data included general information (e.g.name, address, contact), demographic information (e.g. gender, education status of the patient, marital status), disease characteristics (e.g. frequency of checking clinical parameters such as HbA1c level, lipid profile), and self-management behaviors (e.g. physical exercises, oral drugs, outside food consumption). Results demonstrated that there was an association between age, education, duration of diabetes, frequency of checking blood glucose levels, fasting blood glucose levels, and diabetic-related complications. Diabetic patients who have suffered for more than 15 years [3.21, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.75 - 5.89] were more likely to develop diabetes-associated diseases. The patients whose ages were more than 60 years (95% CI: 1.63 – 57.92) were more prevalent in developing diabetes-related complications. Those patients who had no formal education were (3.85, 95% CI: 1.8 – 8.22) more prone to have diabetes-related complications. The patients who didn’t check their blood glucose levels regularly were more likely (21.5, 95% CI: 3.64 – 127.06) to have DM-related complications. It was also found the patients who didn’t have their blood glucose level under control were more likely to have (3.13, 95% CI: 1.62 – 6.05) times of having diabetes-related complications. This study reported that among DM patients’ multiple complications were predominantly seen in patients taking both insulin and oral drugs such as neuropathy, dental problems, nephropathy, foot problems, cardiovascular disease, skin problems, and other concomitant diseases or disease conditions (e.g. tuberculosis, streptococcal pneumonia, musculoskeletal disorder). The findings of the current study suggested that the regular monitoring and management of blood sugar levels, as well as close communication with healthcare providers, can help to minimize the risk of complications in these patients

Confessional poetry : voice of oppressed women
(BRAC University, 2015-04) Jahan, Israt; Chowdhury, Rukhsana Rahim
Confessional poetry is the poetry of the personal. This genre is mainly focused on extreme moments of individuals, their private experience and psyche. Confessional poets‘ private experiences are revealed in their poetry. Confessional poetry is quite different from traditional poems. This genre breaks down the traditional definition of poetry and explores new poetic style where poets vent out their inner feelings and unspoken words through their writings. Confessional poetry is famous both for male and female poet but female poets theme; writing and style are different from male poets. For the female poets, confessional poetry is a medium where they can expose their psyche. Through this genre woman poets seek self-definition. Female confessional poets struggle to find connection between the name that was set for her by the society and the name that they wants to give themselves. Sylvia Plath and Kamala Das are two confessional poets belong to different country. Plath is an American confessional poet and Kamala Das is Indian poet. Though these two poets belong to different country, different society even their themes of poems are quite different but the tone of their poems is same. Their personal trauma, childhood suppression is vented out by their poetry. Both mental and physical sufferings can be seen in Sylvia Plath and Kamala Das‘s poems. Plath‘s poetry book The Ariel deals with her suffering for being a woman, this book also deals with mental sickness, the urge to find the ―Self‖of Plath. Then, Kamala Das‘s book The Descendants is more about her experience of love and lust. Many poems of this book are about her search for true love. Just like Sylvia Plath Kamala Das also portrays her sufferings for being a woman and her struggle to find self-definition. Actually, by showing personal sufferings in their poems, these two poets depict the universal sufferings of womanhood. This two women‘s struggle is to find their identity and their ―Self‖. Actually these two poets use this genre as a medium for their oppressed voice in a rebellious way. They project their emotion as well as represent the reality of the world through portraying their own experience.

Cultural capital and academic achievement: a study based on government primary school students
(BRAC University, 2021-07) Murtaz, Maleha; Jahan, Israt
This paper explored the relation between cultural capital and academic achievement in a government primary school of Chittagong, Bangladesh. This is a mixed method research where 61 parents of grade 5 students were selected for survey by using cluster sampling method, and 10 parents of high achiever and achiever students were selected for key informant interviews by using purposive sampling technique. 15 hypotheses were tested depending on three major themes; parents’ education, parents’ communication and parents’ recreational behavior. For this analysis, Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient was used to identify relationship between variables. This study found that in the setting of government primary school, parent’s education has no correlation with children’s academic achievement, but, at the same time, home based learning aid has moderate positive correlation with children’s academic success. Again, having someone in home who is involved with reading also has moderate positive correlation with children’s academic achievement. On a different note, Parents’ communication has small positive association with children’s academic success but some of the specific pattern of communication have moderate to high correlation. Encouraging children regularly, maintaining a comfortable relationship with them, story-telling and parents’ after school discussion with children have small positive correlation. In addition, accompanying children while they study, parents’ aspiration and expectations towards their children and set-rules by parents have large positive correlation. On the other hand, parents’ recreational behavior does not have any correlation with children’s academic achievement of government primary school student.

Does the Annual Report Sufficiently Reveal the Relationship Between Board Characteristics and Bank Performance? Evidence from Bangladesh
(Daffodil International University, 2025-11-25) Jahan, Israt
This research aims to assess the extent to which the annual reports in Bangladesh are able to unveil the relationship between the board characteristics and the bank performance. The disclosure quality and its limitations are the main aspects of the study. The analysis covers key governance variables like board size, board independence, CEO tenure, and political connections along with the financial performance indicators of return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) for both Islamic and conventional banks. Continuous and dynamic methods of analysis, particularly using System GMM, are applied in the study to determine the extent to which publicly available data reflects the governance-performance relationship taking into consideration the endogeneity and performance persistence effects. The research results show that annual reports present basic numerical data that allow for a limited assessment of the efficiency of the board. Board size and CEO tenure reveal measurable correlations with the financial performance of conventional banks while the link in Islamic banks is weaker owing to governance structures that comply with Shariah and risk-sharing mechanisms within the bank. Political connections are found to have varying effects, while the role of board independence and competency is frequently hidden by the scanty narrative and qualitative reporting. The research indicates that the absence of forward-looking information, inadequacy of narrative content, and non-provision of audit assurance weaken the annual reports’ capability of completely portraying the board’s functioning and the management's strategic decision-making. Annual reports, in general, are a basic source for analyzing the relationship between governance and performance, but their drawbacks require the use of qualitative data, narrative disclosures, and assurance mechanisms as support in order to gain a thorough understanding. These implications are significant for the aforementioned groups if they seek to bring about the changes in areas of transparency, and board oversight, and to further elevate financial performance in the dual banking system of Bangladesh.

EFL learners’ perceptions of effective English language teachers at universities in Bangladesh: a mixed-methods investigation
(BRAC University, 2025-02) Jahan, Israt; Islam, Mahbubul
Teacher effectiveness generally stems from impactful teachers and robust teaching practices that promote meaningful learning. This dissertation employs a concurrent mixed-methods research design to examine 152 EFL students’ perceptions of an effective English language teacher, from two private and two public universities in Bangladesh. A structured questionnaire, categorized into three areas— content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and socio-affective skills—was utilized to generate quantitative data on the perceptions of effective English teachers from learners who had completed at least one foundational English course at the university. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, considering gender, academic performance, and types of institutions as independent variables or subgroups. The student subgroups shared similar fundamental views regarding effective English teachers, but subtle differences coexist. First, more female than male students believed that English teachers should possess content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and socio-affective skills. Second, low-achieving students were more likely to agree that teachers must show adequate content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and socio-affective abilities. Third, students from private universities valued pedagogical knowledge more than students from public universities. In contrast, public university students placed greater importance on teachers' socio-affective skills than their peers in private institutions. Qualitative data on the same topic were gathered through in-depth interviews with eight students who participated in the quantitative study earlier. This qualitative data was then analyzed thematically to gain insights into students' perspectives about effective English language teachers. The qualitative findings significantly corroborated the quantitative results with minimal divergence. However, the interview data indicated that an effective English teacher can foster positive changes and enhance students' language proficiency through content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and socio-affective skills while ensuring a supportive teaching-learning environment contributing to students' academic success. The study's findings have significant implications for English language educators, administrators, and policymakers in fostering the positive attributes of English language teachers at the tertiary level of English education and teacher education programs.

Exploring the effectiveness of online teaching learning practices at the government primary schools of Bangladesh during the COVID-19 Pandemic
(BRAC University, 2022-03) Akhter, Narjis; Jahan, Israt
This study is about how online education is assisting students in government primary schools in Bangladesh during the pandemic and whether it is effectively assisting students in meeting their goals. The study was carried out to find out how distance learning, also known as e-learning, electronic learning etc.is helping the students to meet their pedagogic needs and fulfill the criteria needed for effective online schooling. To analyze the efficiency of online classes amidst the pandemic, GPSs from the marginalized communities of the Rayerbazar area have been chosen to represent the fragment of the educational crisis the nation is suffering from. In this regard, the following study was carried out in four Government Primary Schools from the Razyerbazar area of the capital. The catchment area that these four GPS covers are primarily within the zone of the urban slums of Dhaka city. The targeted population were comprised of stakeholders who are primarily affiliated with the Government Primary Schools, namely students, teachers and head teachers. The findings from this study suggests that the students and teachers who were interviewed came into a common consensus that they prefer physical classes over online classes, however even if online classes were not the best mode of schooling, it was still the next best alternative and preferable rather than sitting idle at home during the lockdown imposed by the pandemic. Lack of adequate technological devices like smart-phones, laptops, desktops and expensive data packs were some common obstacles from the student’s side. On the other hand, the teachers expressed their challenges regarding not receiving adequate training to effectively conduct online classes, unsatisfactory attendance from the students, and lastly, lack of proper technological devices. However, one of the key findings of this study is that although there are various obstacles that students and teachers face when teaching online learning, the good news is that conducting lessons online is without a doubt a laudable move adopted by the present administration to prevent students' academic activities being lost.
