    ANALYSIS OF DISORDERED SPEECH OF CHILDREN WITH CLEFT PALATE

    Speakers with velopharyngeal incompetence,produce hypernasal speech across voiced elements.During the production of vowels,due to the defective velopharyngeal mechanism,oral cavity gets coupled with the nasal cavity.This coupling may introduce resonances of nasal cavity in the resulting vowel sound.Speech signal of eight cleft palate children with various VP opening have been studied. By considering normal and nasal vowel formants of normal speakers as reference, we have observed that variation in the spectrum of their speech occurs due to various types of VP opening due to abnormal coupling of oral and nasal cavity. In case of large VP opening an extra peak or nasal resonance is seen to appear around 600Hz and for small VP opening around 950 Hz. As the VP opening or cut of the cleft palate increases, the first formant reduces and lowers the extra formant.

    EFFECT OF DETOPPING ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF SESAME

    A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of detopping on the growth and yield of sesame varieties at the research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during late summer to early monsoon (April-July) of 2014. The experiment comprised of morphological modification of sesame plant through detopping at four different stages i.e. detopping at 25 DAS (D DAS (D 3 ) and without detopping (D 0 1 ), detopping at 35 DAS (D 2 ), detopping at 45 ) of some sesame varieties i.e. BARI Til 3, BARI Til 4 and a local variety named Atshira. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results revealed that effects of detopping on varieties were significant for growth and yield parameters (except 1000- seed weight). Maximum plant height (103.15 cm) was found from Atshira (Local) without detopping the plants, BARI Til 3 produced maximum number of branches plant (24) when detopped at 45 DAS, the highest Leaf Area Index (LAI) was recorded in Atshira (Local)detopped at 35 DAS. Although maximum number of seed capsule found from Atshira (Local) with no detopping, maximum number of capsule plant resulting highest seed yield (1168.3 kg ha detopped at 35 DAS. -1 ) were recorded from BARI Til 3 when -1 -1 was -1

    EFFECT OF PANICLE INITIATION STAGE SUBMERGENCE ON THE REPRODUCTIVE BEHAVIOR AND YIELD OF DIFFERENT RICE VARIETIES

    A pot experiment was carried out at the research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka with four replications following randomized complete block design during Aman season of 2018 to find out the effect of panicle initiation stage submergence on plants morphological and physiological characters. The experiment comprised of two factors as follows: factor A: variety (four tolerant varieties, V - FR 13A, V 3 - BRRI dhan51, V 4 - BRRI dhan79, V 5 - Binadhan-11 and one susceptible V - BR5), factor B: four submergence treatments (S 0 - control, S - 4 days submergence, S 2 - 7 days submergence, S 3 1 - 10 days submergence). Study reflected that all the parameters were significantly influenced by combined effect of variety and submergence except plant height at 20, 40 DAT and at harvest, 1% panicle emergence stage and 100 grain weight plant -1 . The highest number of tillers plant , 1%, 50%, 100% panicle emergence stage, number of ineffective tillers plant , number of unfilled grains plant -1 , number of unfilled grains panicle and weight of unfilled grains panicle -1 were found in the treatment V 2 S . The highest plant height, SPAD value after desubmergence were found in V 2 S 1 3 . The highest number of fresh leaves plant -1 , total biomass plant -1 was found in V 1 S . The highest number of filled grains plant -1 and panicle -1 were found in V 2 S 0 0 . The highest number of rotten leaves plant -1 , effective tillers plant -1 , panicle length plant -1 -1 , panicle weight plant , oven dry weight of leaf blade plant -1 ,oven dry weight of leaf sheath with stem plant , oven dry weight of root plant -1 were found in V 3 S 3 , V 1 S 3 , V 5 S treatment respectively. The highest weight of filled grains plant 0 , V 4 S 0 , V 1 S 2 -1 , V and 100 grains weight plant -1 were found in V 4 S 0 and V 1 S treatment. As grain yield is the ultimate goal of rice production so the variety which shows less reduction despite being submerged can be suggested for cultivation. The lowest reduction (17.91%) in yield compared to control was found in BRRI dhan51 followed by Binadhan-11 (18.29%). But when submergence duration is more than 7 days Binadhan-11 can be suggested which tolerates submergence up to 10 days. Though the weight of filled grains plant 1 was highest in BRRI dhan79 but its ultimate yield reduction is more (31.78%) than other tolerant varieties due to the effect of panicle initiation stage submergence. 2 -1 -1 S 2 1 and V 5 2 -1 -1 S 0 -1

    EFFECTS OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC FERTILIZERS ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF WHEAT (BARI Gom 26)

    An experiment was conducted at the Soil Science research field of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during the period of December 2016 to April 2017 in order to evaluate the effects of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the growth and yield of wheat (BARI Gom 26). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) having eight treatments with three replications. The treatments were as follows; T0= Control, T1= 100% recommended doses of inorganic fertilizers (RDIF), T2= 100% recommended doses of organic fertilizers (RDOF), T3= 50% RDIF+50% RDOF, T4= 67% RDIF+33% RDOF, T5= 33% RDIF+67% RDOF, T6= 25% RDIF+75% RDOF, T7= 75% RDIF+25% RDOF. The experimental soil belongs to the Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain (AEZ-1). The soil was sandy loam in texture having pH 5.13, organic matter content 1.64%, total N 0.07%, available P 55.59 ppm, exchangeable K 0.21 meq 100 g-1 soil and available S 19.75 ppm. Application of organic and inorganic fertilizers resulted in a considerable influence on the properties of the post-harvest soils such as pH, organic matter content, total N, available P, exchangeable K and available S. The results revealed that the yield components such as, plant height, spike length, no. of tillers hill-1, spikelets spike-1 , grains spike-1, 1000-grains weight of wheat (BARI Gom 26) responded significantly due to application of organic and inorganic fertilizers. The highest plant height (91cm) was observed in T7 treatment and the lowest (48.73 cm) was found in the T0 (control). The maximum number of tillers hill-1 (4.66) was recorded in the treatment T7 and the lowest (3.04) was observed from the controlled treatment T0. The highest spike length (9.46 cm), highest spikelets spike-1 (15.89), maximum number of grains spike-1 (51.63), highest 1000-grains weight (35.93g) was noticed at T7 treatment and the lowest performance of those treatments was noticed at T0 (control). Application of organic and inorganic fertilizers significantly increased the yield component of grain and straw of wheat (BARI Gom 26). The treatment T7 receiving 75% inorganic fertilizers with 25% organic fertilizers showed the highest grain yield (4.75 t ha-1) and straw yield (5.56 t ha-1).The lowest grain yield (2.34 t ha-1) and straw yield (2.71 t ha-1) were found in the treatment T0 (control). The findings of the study showed that the performance of the treatment T7 was the best among all treatments. Therefore, 75% inorganic fertilizer and 25% organic fertilizer is recommended for wheat cultivation.

    EFFECTS OF PROBIOTIC AND PREBIOTIC ON NUTRITIONAL QUALITIES OF SYNBIOTIC CAKE

    The purpose of this study was to develop a synbiotic cake to which probiotic and prebiotic ingredients were added and verified the perspectives of the product with regard to potential for consumer health benefits and sensorial acceptance. Inulin was extracted and characterized for the application as prebiotic. Synbiotic cake constructed by incorporating inulin and by the application of film forming solutions (sodium alginate and glycerol) containing Lactobacillus spp followed by an air drying step at 60 0C for 10 min. Storage studies were performed for synbiotic cake by analyzing moisture, pH, fiber, firmness, color and microbial viability test in time interval for 0 day, 4 days and 8 days. The sensory profile of cakes with prebiotic and probiotic (synbiotic cake) and without prebiotic and probiotic (control cake) was evaluated using a nine point hedonic scale. According to our analytical results inulin obtained 5.82% moisture, 0.58% ash, 5.52 pH, 0.04 mg/ml total sugar, 0.07 mg/ml reducing sugar, 0.03 mg/ml non reducing sugar along with the comparable functional properties (71.64 g/l solubility, 2.16 g of water/g of sample water absorption capacity, 1.57 ml of water/g of sample swelling capacity). The results revealed that moisture content, pH sample fiber content and firmness of all prepared sample (control sample to T3S5) ranged from 11.56 to 18.68 %, 9.79 to 10.02, 2.80 to 4.34 % and 2.19 to 2.95 N respectively. Probiotic populations varied from 7.767 up to 7.823 log cfu g-1 (Before In vitro) and from 6.71 up to 6.79 log cfu g-1 (after digestion).Significant difference (P<0.05) between the control and synbiotic cakes was observed in case of moisture, pH, fiber, firmness, color and viability test of probiotic. All samples showed a significant (P<0.05) change for PH , firmness and color while there was no significant change in moisture, fiber and viability count during 8 days of storage. Sensory evaluation of cakes indicated that all samples were in acceptable limit. The T2S3 (2% inulin+ 50:50 film forming solution) sample scored best in terms of sensory attributes among the sample though T3S3 (3% inulin+ 50:50 film forming solution) obtained best result for fiber, firmness and microbial count (before and after in- vitro digestion). To be concluded T2S3 can be considered as the best sample in terms of nutritional and sensory attributes.

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF CABBAGE AS INFLUENCED BY DIFFERENT LEVELS OF BORON AND GIBBERELLIC ACID

    The experiment was carried out at the Horticultural Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from October 2018 to March 2019 to evaluate the growth and yield of cabbage as influenced by different levels of boron and gibberellic acid (GA 3 ). The experiment comprised of two different factors such as, Factor A: four GA 3 levels viz. G 0 = Control (No GA 3 ii ), G 1 = 70 ppm GA 3 = 100 ppm GA 3 and G 3 = 130 ppm GA 3 and Factor B: three levels of boron application viz. B 0 = Control (No B), B 1 = 4 kg B ha -1 and B 2 = 8 kg B ha -1 . The experiment was set up in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Regarding GA 3 application, the treatment G 2 (100 ppm GA 3 ) produced the highest marketable cabbage yield (44.13 t ha -1 ) and G 0 (No GA 3 ) produced the lowest (39.43 tha ). For boron (B) application, B 1 (4 kg B ha -1 ) gave the highest marketable cabbage yield (45.38 t ha -1 (100 ppm GA 3 ) B 0 (No B) produced the lowest (36.57 tha + 4 kg B ha -1 -1) . For combined effect, G 2 ) gave the highest marketable cabbage yield (47.71 t ha ) and the lowest (34.49 t ha -1 ) was from G 0 B 0 (No GA 3 + No B ha ). Considering economic analysis, G 2 B 1 -1 showed the highest gross return (Tk 572520), net return (Tk 392400) and BCR (3.18) whereas G 0 B 0 gave the lowest gross return (Tk. 413880), net return (Tk. 241841) and BCR (2.40). So, it can be concluded that 100 ppm GA 3 and 4 kg Boron is suitable for cabbage production compare to other treatment combinations.

    INFLUENCE OF MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL CHARACTERS AND YIELD OF OKRA THROUGH APPLICATION OF ZINC AND BORON

    The study was carried out at the Central Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from April to August 2018 to study the influence of morpho-physiological characters and yield of okra (BARI Dherosh- 1). The treatments of the experiment was T ii 0 (control), T (20 kg Zn ha -1 ), T 2 (30 kg Zn ha -1 ), T 3 (10 kg B ha -1 ), T 4 (20 kg B ha -1 ), T + 10 kg B ha -1 ), T 6 (20 kg Zn ha -1 + 20 kg B ha -1 ), T 7 5 1 (20 kg Zn ha (30 kg Zn ha + 10 kg B ha -1 ) and T 8 (30 kg Zn ha -1 + 20 kg B ha -1 ). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results revealed that the highest plant height (118.30 cm) was recorded from T (30 kg Zn ha -1 + 20 kg B ha -1 ) but the highest number of leaves plant (30.06) was recorded from T 7 (30 kg Zn ha -1 + 10 kg B ha -1 ). Results also revealed that the highest leaf area index, (298.60) and SPAD value (65.73), single fruit weight (14.14 g), fruit length (15.12 cm), fruit diameter (1.96 cm), % fruit dry matter (9.26 g), number of fruits plant -1 (36.12), fresh fruit weight plant (510.70 g), fruit yield plot -1 (7.75 kg) and fruit yield ha -1 (17.22 t ha -1 -1 -1 -1 8 ) were found from T (30 kg Zn ha -1 + 10 kg B ha -1 ) treatment, whereas the control treatment (T ) showed lowest performance for the respected parameters. From the above results it can be said that 30 kg Zn ha -1 with 10 kg B ha -1 combination may be helpful for okra cultivation in the field level to increase okra production.

    Optimizing raised bed dimensions for enhanced maize yield, water footprint reduction, and improved soil moisture dynamics under furrow irrigation

Optimizing raised bed dimensions for enhanced maize yield, water footprint reduction, and improved soil moisture dynamics under furrow irrigation.Asian J Agric 8:10-22.Effective water management is crucial for sustainable agriculture, especially in regions facing water scarcity. This study examinesthe impact of different Raised Bed (RB)dimensions on maize (Zea maysL.) yield, Water Footprint (WF), and soil water content under furrow irrigation, with a focus on water conservation. The experiment, conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University,Bangladesh,utilized a randomized complete block design featuring four irrigation treatments: the Conventional Method (CM)and three RB configurations with widths of 25 cm, 65 cm, and 110 cm.The RB65 treatment significantly improved maize yield, achieving 13.1±1.4 t/ha compared to 9.89±1.11 t/ha with CM. Additionally, RB65 peaked in water productivity, reducing irrigation water use by 37.72%, highlighting its potential for water conservation. Soil moisture retention was consistently higher across all RB treatments, with RB65 showing the greatest retention at depths up to 80 cm. It also recorded the lowest green WF (88.6±10.07l/kg) and blue WF (12.63±1.43 l/kg), resulting in the lowest total WF (101.22±11.50 l/kg). These findings suggest that RB systems, particularly the 65 cm configuration, optimize water usage and enhance maize productivity, making it a viable strategy for resource management in water-limited areas. The study recommends adopting the RB65 configuration to maximize water efficiency and crop yields, contributing to food security and sustainable agricultural practices. However, these results are based on specificgeographical and climatic conditions, limiting their generalizability to other regions or crops. Future research should explore long-term studies across diverse agro-ecological zones and examine various crops to validate the broader utility of the RB65 configuration.

    PREVALENCE OF FUNGI IN THE SEEDS AND SEEDLINGS OF BLACKBERRY

    Prevalence of fungi in seeds of blackberry plant collected from six different sources under Netrakona and Dhaka district were recorded. Seven different fungi, representing six genera, were detected in the seeds of blackberry. The seven seed borne fungi observed on blackberry seed , were Pestalotia psidii, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium equiseti, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus sp. and Penicillium sp. All these seven fungi on the seeds of blackberry appear to be new records for Bangladesh. Prevalence of all these fungi varied significantly (P=1 %) with respect to location. Pathogenicity test reveals that Curvularia lunata, Pestalotia psidii and Fusarium equiseti are pathogenic to blackberry tested in five selected nurseries in two different districts. In survey, four fungi species such as Puccinia psidii, Pestalotia psidii, Fusarium equiseti and Curvularia lunata were isolated from the leaves and stems of blackberry.

    RESPONSE OF BORON AND SULFUR FERTILIZATION ON MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL, YIELD AND YIELD ATTRIBUTES OF MUSTARD

    A field experiment was conducted at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from November, 2019 to February, 2020 to study the response of boron and sulfur fertilization on morpho-physiological, yield and yield attributes of mustard. The experiment considered of nine treatment, which are consisted of boron and sulfur viz. T 0 = B 0 S 0 , T 1 = 1 Kg B ha 1 S, T 5 = 1 Kg ha -1 B + 20 Kg ha -1 -1 , T 2 = 2 Kg ha S, T 6 = 1 Kg ha -1 -1 B, T 3 = 20Kg ha B + 40 Kg ha -1 -1 S, T 4 = 40 Kg ha S, T 7 = 2 Kg ha B + 20 Kg ha -1 S and T 8 = 2 Kg ha -1 B + 40 Kg ha -1 S. NPK was used in optimum rate in the field (Urea = 350 Kg ha -1 , TSP = 220 Kg ha -1 , MOP = 100 Kg ha -1 ). We used Bari Shorisha-14 (B. campestris). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The data were collected on plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of branch per plant, SPAD value of leaf, silique per plant, seed per silique, 1000 seed weight, seed yield, stover yield, biological yield, harvest index. A statistically significant variation was recorded in terms of all the characters related to growth and yield of mustard. In the experimental findings we found that, the highest plant height at 30, 45 and 60 DAS (52.37, 97.40 and 113.0 cm), maximum leaf number (16.07), highest number of branch per plant (10.07), maximum SPAD value of leaf (52.63), highest number of siliquae (137), maximum number of seeds siliqua (34.17), highest weight of 1000 of seeds (3.90 g), highest grain yield (1.64 t ha -1 ), highest stover yield (3.97 t ha -1 ), highest biological yield (5.62 t ha -1 ) and highest harvest index (29.20%) were obtained from the combination of 1 Kg B ha -1 + 20 Kg S ha (T 5 ). Therefore, it can be said, that the higher grain yield could be obtained from a combination of 1 Kg ha -1 B + 20 Kg ha -1 S with NPK
