Depression, sleeping pattern, and suicidal ideation among medical students in Bangladesh: A cross-sectional pilot study
(Springer Link, 6/1/2020) Hasan, M. Tasdik; Hossain, Sahadat; Gupta, Rajat Das; Podder, Vivek; Mowri, Naima Afroz; Ghosh, Anindita; Mahmood, Hassan Rushekh; Ahmmed, Faisal; Khatun, M. S. T. Halima; Nodi, Rhedeya Nury; Koly, Kamrun Nahar; Yasmeen, Sharmeen; Islam, Nazrul
Background Depression is a major morbidity and the most common mental disorder among the medical students in medical schools globally. Undergraduate students suffer stress more due to their academic curriculum than the students of other faculties. In low-resource settings like Bangladesh, there is a dearth in research on the mental health of undergraduate medical students. This pilot study was conducted to add to the existing limited evidence by reporting the prevalence of depression and describing sleeping pattern and suicidal tendencies among medical students. Relevantly, we have investigated the overall mental health status among the medical students in Bangladesh. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in two medical colleges of Dhaka between July 2013 and December 2013, among 221 Bangladeshi medical students from first to fifth year. By the convenience sampling technique, data were collected by a pretested, structured, self-administered questionnaire and analysis was done by SPSS version 18.0. Depression was assessed by the validated Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) tool among the respondents. Goldberg’s General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) was used for assessing overall mental health status. Results Depression was found in 38.9% of participants, with 3.6%, 14.5%, and 20.8% being severe, moderate, and mild depression, respectively. 17.6% of medical students had suicidal tendency or attempted suicide at least once after attending medical school. The sleeping hours were inadequate and altered after starting this stressful academic course. 33.5% of medical students had poor mental health status. There was a statistically significant association between poor mental health status in the age group less than 22 years old and initial academic study year (1st to 3rd of MBBS). Conclusion The findings are suggestive of a higher prevalence of depression among early-year medical students and marginal predominance in males. Suicidal tendency is also higher. This calls for further investigation with situation analysis, qualitative explorations, and surveys to explore the burden of such disorders in Bangladesh.

Evaluation of supply chain management: a case study on Kallol Enterprise Limited of Kallol Group of Companies
(BRAC University, 2014-12) Islam, Mohammad Zohirul; Islam, Nazrul
The Supply Chain is not a business function, it is a network of companies and Supply Chain Management is the implementation of cross-functional relationships with key customers and suppliers in that network. It is a new business model necessary for an organization's success and every function needs to be involved. Management must recognize that the ultimate success of an organization depends on the ability to integrate the company's network of business relationships in a mutually beneficial way. The management of this network of relationships is supply chain management. Successful supply chain management requires cross-functional integration within the firm and across the network of firms that comprise the supply chain. It is focused on the improvements in performance that result from better management of key relationships. By understanding the supply chain management processes and how they should be implemented, management will better understand the value of more integrated supply chains and how this integration will lead to increased shareholder value and a sustainable competitive advantage. Entire network of entities, directly or indirectly interlinked and interdependent in serving the same consumer or customer. It comprises of vendors that supply raw material, producers who convert the material into products, warehouses that store, distribution centers that deliver to the retailers, and retailers who bring the product to the ultimate user. Supply chains underlie value-chains because, without them, no producer has the ability to give customers what they want, when and where they want, at the price they want. Producers compete with each other only through their supply chains, and no degree of improvement at the producer's end can make up for the deficiencies in a supply chain which reduce the producer's ability to compete. Objective of this thesis is to evaluate supply chain management of Kallol Enterprise Limited. Is Kallol maintaining the process and procedures of SCM to go to its goal or to achieve its business objective? If so how? If not, why? What will be suggestions for maintenance of SCM? The focus in the thesis is only on KEL in the Supply chain. This company is managing its Supply chain based on what is best for their own. Collaboration with other companies in the Supply chain will present win-win situations for this company and for other companies in the Supply chain.

Factors affecting consumers preferences on fast food items in Bangladesh
(Journal of Applied Business Research (JABR), 2010-08) Ullah, G. M. Shafayet; Islam, Nazrul
Fast food industry is a high growing sector of Bangladesh. It is concerned with the tastes and habits of the people. The food-taking habit especially in fast food segment has been changing very fast over last decade among the people of Dhaka - the capital city of Bangladesh. The reasons could be attributed by the increase of awareness, growth of education, development of information technology, and expansion of television channels and print media in Bangladesh. Hence, this paper aims at identifying the preference factors of fast food consumers living in Dhaka city. This study was conducted among the university students who usually eat fast food at their leisure time. To conduct the study, a total of 250 respondents were interviewed with a structured questionnaire. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used in analyzing the data. Multivariate analysis technique like factor analysis was performed to identify the preference factors of the fast food student-consumers of Bangladesh. Multiple regressions were run to identify the relationship between the factors identified and the overall preference of the consumers. Results show that the consumers give most importance on brand reputation of the food item followed by nearness to receive and accessibility, similarity of taste with previous experience, cost and quality of the food, discount and taste, cleanliness and hygiene, salesmanship and decoration, fat and cholesterol level, and self-service factors. This study suggests that the brand reputation, nearness and accessibility, similarity in taste, and cost and quality relationship should be emphasized to improve the attraction of the university students towards the fast food items in Bangladesh.

Impact of PESTLE factors on power generation projects of Bangladesh
(BRAC University, 2013-04) Hussain, Farhan; Islam, Nazrul
Generation of electricity in Bangladesh has been in prolonged crisis. To overcome this hindrance the government according to the road map has taken up several power production projects. However this journey to achieve a load shedding free Bangladesh has been very rocky. Some of the projects have faced criticism from pressure groups whereas other projects have become uncertain due to lack of funding or technical knowhow. The main reason for this failure has been lack of analysis and planning. PESTLE is one of the project management analysis tools that can be used as a solution to this problem. The rationale for this study is (1) To examine how these PESTLE factors or changes to these factors affect the power production projects. (2) To determine best possible solutions when these factor changes or remains unchanged so that projects can still attain their objectives. In this study Literature review has been used to collect both primary and secondary information using the website, obtaining articles from newspapers and the library. Qualitative research is useful during the early stages of a study when the researcher may be unsure of exactly what will be studied or what to focus on and gives the researcher freedom to let the study unfold more naturally. In this study it has been observed that there are some PESTLE factors that have major impact on the outcome of the projects and these major factors vary from one project to another. So it is crucial to examine which factors are major and which are minor. Once the major factors related to a particular project have been determined the next step would be to choose the best possible solution to those factors so that they could be made favorable to accomplish the objectives of the project.

Improved Quality of Service in ZigBee network with statistical modeling
(IEEE Xplore, 2016-07-11) Islam, Nazrul; Biddut, Md. Jaminul Haque; Swapna, Asma Islam; Asaduzzaman, Sayed
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) comprises the less power consuming, light weight and effective Sensor Nodes (SNs) for higher network performance. ZigBee is the real time application for the WSN used for low-cost data and energy consumption characteristics. ZigBee is a robust network certain application of which has come out with a critically low designation for less data rate, long delivery delay and packet loss as well in order to lower the cost. However, ZigBee devices have many potential features to make a splendid wireless network. Hence, putting an improvement analogy inside the performance parameter is a way to overcome the limitations of ZigBee usage in certain scales. ZigBee follows a model for its node distribution, traffic routing and Quality of Service (QoS). The QoS indicates the efficiency and performance of any network. The increase in efficiency of QoS on the ZigBee network lies in the realization of maximizing throughput of the network. This paper is destined to represent the improved QoS in the ZigBee network applying Stochastic and Widest Path models. Riverbed Simulator v17.5 is used to investigate foremost QoS parameters in the ZigBee network. The optimized result of this study will be handy in the application field of the ZigBee network. And it also best fits for the deployment of the large-scale device to device communication. Full Text Link: http://doi.org/10.1109/ICAEE.2015.7506824

Management of Public and Private Sector Enterprises in Bangladesh: A Comparative Study During 1971-2011
(Eastern University, 2022-09-24) Islam, Nazrul; Karim, Zahidul
The management practices of private and public sector enterprises of Bangladesh have been continually improving since the independence of the country. From the inception of the country in 1971, there was a highly disorganized management in both the public and private sectors. However, it has now been reached to a reasonable shape that can be claimed as moderate management practices like other developing countries of the world. Observation shows that a rapid development in the management of private sector has been occurred since early 1990s. In 2000, there has been a substantial change and modification in management practices of the private sector enterprises in Bangladesh due to shifting focus of the government from public to private sector. The reasons can be attributed by the development of information technology and introduction to the privatization policy of the enterprises. This study shows that the development of management practices followed an upward trend in Bangladesh. The higher the development in private sector management is inducing the higher development of public sector management in Bangladesh.
