    An exploration of the assessment for English (compulsory) at the Secondary School Certificate Examination of Dhaka Board

    This dissertation examines some imbedded problems of our assessment procedures at the secondary level education. The whole study was based on the English teachers who examined the answer script of the SSC English papers under Dhaka Board in 2006. This research reflects some assertion like marking variations among the examiners, the examiners quality, their education, recruitment, training and teachers' satisfaction of present assessment. Based on the teachers' opinion it highlights some important issues by which the assessment procedures could be built with less controversy and be accepted as a rigorous one. Thus, it goes on to consider the current situation of the secondary education assessment procedures and to suggest ways in which sustainable change can be effected by building on what teachers already do.

    Anti-solvent Materials Enhanced Structural and Optical Properties on Ambiently Fabricated Perovskite Thin Films

    Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) hold potential for low-cost, high-efficiency solar energy, but their sensitivity to moisture limits practical application. Current fabrication requires controlled environments, limiting mass production. Researchers aim to develop stable PSCs with longer lifetimes under ambient conditions. In this research work, we investigated the stability of perovskite films and solar cells fabricated and annealed in natural air using four different anti-solvents: toluene, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether, and chlorobenzene. Films (about 300 nm thick) were deposited via single-step spin-coating and subjected to ambient air-atmosphere for up to 30 days. We monitored changes in crystallinity, electrical properties, and optics over time. Results showed a gradual degradation in the films’ crystallinity, morphology, and electro-optical properties. Notably, films made with ethyl acetate exhibited superior stability compared to other solvents. These findings contribute to advancing stable and high-performance PSCs manufactured under normal ambient conditions. In addition, we also discuss the possible machine learning (ML) approach to our future work direction to optimize the materials structures, and synthesis process parameters for future high-efficient perovskite solar cells fabrication.

    Chronological progress in enhancing CIGS solar cell performance through window layer development: Fundamentals, synthesis, optimization

    Several factors, particularly the material of the window layer, contribute to the efficiency of CIGS solar cells. To optimize light absorption and reduce energy losses, it is critical to select the appropriate material for the window layer development. Thus, the main emphasis of this review is on the development of window layers, covering fundamental concepts, synthesis techniques, characterization methods, and optimization strategies. Metal oxides and doped metal oxides are critical materials for optimizing charge carrier flow, minimizing energy loss, and elevating sunlight transmission to the CIGS absorber. Despite tremendous progress, difficulties such as increased conductivity, transparency, stability, and cost-effectiveness remain. Discovering novel materials, specific combinations, and improved deposition techniques offers further details on the structure-property relationships of window layers. Addressing these difficulties is critical to improving the performance of CIGS solar cells, which are now approximately 23.6 % efficient. These enhancements are critical for progressing sustainable energy solutions.

    English language proficiency of bankers to meet the expectations of the private banking sector in Bangladesh: a qualitative investigation

    This investigation focused on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and examined the English language proficiency of employees who obtained either business or non-business degrees, as well as the expectations of employers in Bangladesh's banking sector. As the financial industry becomes more global and reliant on English, it has become more crucial to possess a comprehensive set of communication skills. Although the industry plays a vital part in economic development, research on its special language requirements is still needed. This study addressed the existing discrepancy by examining the present English communication patterns, highlighting the differences between academic preparation and industrial requirements, and evaluating the effect on graduates' job prospects. Participants stressed the importance of connecting ESP courses with the specific requirements of the banking sector to improve work performance and increase employability. These insights provide information for language policies and training programs to enhance communication and promote success in the banking business.

    Green Synthesis of Lead Sulphide Nanoparticles for High-Efficiency Perovskite Solar Cell Applications

    In this study, lead sulfide (PbS) nanoparticles were synthesized by the chemical precipitation method using Aloe Vera extract with PbCl2 and Thiourea (H2N-CS-NH2). The synthesized nanoparticles have been investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD and TEM results confirm that the films are in the cubic phase. The crystallite size, lattice constant, micro-strain, dislocation density, optical bandgap, etc. have been determined using XRD and UV-Vis for investigating the quality of prepared nanoparticles. The possible application of these synthesized nanoparticles in the solar cells was investigated by fabricating the thin films on an FTO-coated and bare glass substrate. The properties of nanoparticles were found to be nearly retained in the film state as well. The experimentally found properties of thin films have been implemented for perovskite solar cell simulation and current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristics have been investigated. The simulation results showed that PbS nanoparticles could be a potential hole transport layer for high-efficiency perovskite solar cell applications.

    Journal writing: a silent kit for writing skills

    This article explores how dialogue journals can be used as a silent kit to improve writing skill. Sixty-five primary school teachers with limited English proficiency wrote dialogue journals in a teachers-training course during nine weeks. Data was gathered from their journal entries and post-study questionnaires. Dialogue journal was found effective to foster the development of descriptive writing, usage of correct syntax & vocabulary, critical thinking and finally to raise learners’ confidence in writing English. This article presents findings with necessary literature review and concludes with a number of recommendations on how EFL practitioners can use journals effectively to promote writing fluency of their students.

    Optimization and Detail Analysis of Novel Structure Pb-Free CsGeI3-Based All-Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells by SCAPS-1D

    In this work, a novel structure of all inorganic PSC (TCO/TiO2/CsGeI3/MoO3/Back Metal contact) has been numerically investigated and optimized. Initially, we simulated the structure by using different optoelectronic parameters found in literature that are substantiated theoretically and experimentally and obtained a PCE of 19.81%. After that, we have turned up a detailed analysis by varying the parameters including the thickness of the light-harvesting layer, ETL, and HTL, bulk defects and amphoteric defect of the light-harvesting layer, interfacial defects, operating temperature, series resistance, and work function to obtain optimum values. The efficiency as high as 22.85% has been achieved along with Voc = 1.16 Volt, Jsc = 23.97 mA/cm2, and FF = 82.25%, respectively for the optimized structure of PSC. We also investigated the capacitance-voltage (C-V) and Mott-Schottky (MS) plots for in depth understanding of the performance variation. The detailed analysis and optimized parameters of this study, we believe, will be useful in synthesising toxic element-free CsGeI3-based all-inorganic PSCs with higher efficiency and stability, paving the way for PSC commercialization.

    Pathways of antibiotic use in Bangladesh: Qualitative protocol for the PAUSE study

    Introduction Global actions to reduce antimicrobial resistance (AMR) include optimising the use of antimicrobial medicines in human and animal health. In countries with weak healthcare regulation, this requires a greater understanding of the drivers of antibiotic use from the perspective of providers and consumers. In Bangladesh, there is limited research on household decision-making and healthcare seeking in relation to antibiotic use and consumption for humans and livestock. Knowledge is similarly lacking on factors influencing the supply and demand for antibiotics among qualified and unqualified healthcare providers. The aim of this study is to conduct integrated research on household decision-making for healthcare and antibiotic use, as well as the awareness, behaviours and priorities of healthcare providers and sellers of antibiotics to translate into policy development and implementation. Methods and analysis In-depth interviews will be conducted with (1) household members responsible for decision-making about illness and antibiotic use for family and livestock; (2) qualified and unqualified private and government healthcare providers in human and animal medicine and (3) stakeholders and policy-makers as key informants on the development and implementation of policy around AMR. Participant observation within retail drug shops will also be carried out. Qualitative methods will include a thematic framework analysis. A holistic approach to understanding who makes decisions on the sale and use of antibiotics, and what drives healthcare seeking in Bangladesh will enable identification of routes to behavioural change and the development of effective interventions to reduce the health risks of AMR. Ethics and dissemination Approval for the study has been obtained from the Institutional Review Board at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh following review by the Research and Ethics Committees (PR-16100) and from Loughborough University (R17-P081). Information about the study will be provided in a participant information letter in Bangla (to be read verbally and given in writing to participants). A written informed consent form in Bangla will be obtained and participants will be informed of their right to withdraw from the study. Dissemination will take place through a 1 day dissemination workshop with key stakeholders in public health and policy, practitioners and scientists in Bangladesh, and through international conference presentations and peer-review publications. Anonymised transcripts of interviews will be made available through open access via institutional data repositories after an embargo period.     Perovskite Materials in X-ray Detection and Imaging: Recent Progress, Challenges, and Future Prospects

    Perovskite materials have attracted significant attention as innovative and efficient X-ray detectors owing to their unique properties compared to traditional X-ray detectors. Herein, chronologically, we present an in-depth analysis of X-ray detection technologies employing organic–inorganic hybrids (OIHs), all-inorganic and lead-free perovskite material-based single crystals (SCs), thin/thick films and wafers. Particularly, this review systematically scrutinizes the advancement of the diverse synthesis methods, structural modifications, and device architectures exploited to enhance the radiation sensing performance. In addition, a critical analysis of the crucial factors affecting the performance of the devices is also provided. Our findings revealed that the improvement from single crystallization techniques dominated the film and wafer growth techniques. The probable reason for this is that SC-based devices display a lower trap density, higher resistivity, large carrier mobility and lifetime compared to film- and wafer-based devices. Ultimately, devices with SCs showed outstanding sensitivity and the lowest detectable dose rate (LDDR). These results are superior to some traditional X-ray detectors such as amorphous selenium and CZT. In addition, the limited performance of film-based devices is attributed to the defect formation in the bulk film, surfaces, and grain boundaries. However, wafer-based devices showed the worst performance because of the formation of voids, which impede the movement of charge carriers. We also observed that by performing structural modification, various research groups achieved high-performance devices together with stability. Finally, by fusing the findings from diverse research works, we provide a valuable resource for researchers in the field of X-ray detection, imaging and materials science. Ultimately, this review will serve as a roadmap for directing the difficulties associated with perovskite materials in X-ray detection and imaging, proposing insights into the recent status, challenges, and promising directions for future research.

    Reforming a community to serve the underserved: ESP modules for midwifery course at BRAC University

    This paper examines the impact of an ESP course designed by BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL) for midwives to develop their English language skills, and to develop them professionally. The course is expected to reform midwives, to empower them with English language skills and professional development by taking part in global development. The community then will be able to reduce the maternal as well as newborn mortality in order to increase coverage of quality maternal and neonatal health services. The course is being offered by BRAC Institute of Global Health (BIGH) with the financial support from the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID). The paper shows to what extent an English language course can help midwives in their profession where they sometimes need to interact in English with foreign doctors, write prescriptions, and other official documents in English. The study is carried out among the course teachers with almost the same experiences, exposure, and education, and among course participants with Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) backgrounds. The data and information have been deduced from a questionnaire, focus group discussions with students, and observation of their performance. The paper shows that most of the participants, having limited English language proficiency, have been able to improve their basic English communication skills. It also shows that almost all students can maintain patients’ portfolio, write prescriptions, reports, discharge certificates, and so on in English. They even feel relaxed enough to speak in English when necessary. It is suggested that ESP modules should concentrate on needs assessment to make it more productive and target oriented.

    Revealing the High-performance of a Novel Ge-sn-based Perovskite Solar Cell by Employing

    In this study, a novel Ge-Sn based perovskite solar cell (PSC) with the structure FTO/WS2/ FA0.75MA0.25Sn0.95Ge0.05I3/MoO3/Ag has been designed and thoroughly analyzed employing SCAPS-1D. Drawing attention from the work of Ito et al where a similar perovskite-based PSC displayed a poor performance of ∼ 4.48% PCE, in which a large conduction band offset (CBO) acts as a critical factor contributing to interfacial recombination and device deterioration. To address this issue, we presented WS2 as an electron transport layer (ETL) along with MoO3 as a hole transport layer (HTL), both possessing compatible CBO and valence band offset (VBO) with perovskite material. Through systematic simulations and optimizations, remarkable improvements in the PSC's performance have been acquired, getting a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.97%. The optimized structure involved a 50 nm MoO3 HTL, 350 nm FA0.75MA0.25Sn0.95Ge0.05I3 light-harvesting layer (LHL), and a 50 nm WS2 ETL. Bulk defect densities for the LHL and ETL were optimized to 1 × 1015 cm−3 and 1 × 1018 cm−3, respectively, significantly superior values than that of reported value in the literature. Particularly, the tolerable defect density of ETL has increased 1000 times more than the published literature. The interfacial tolerable trap density for MoO3/perovskite increased from 1 × 1014 cm−2 to 1 × 1016 cm−2. The study also explored the impact of defects on quantum efficiency, revealing a severe negative influence beyond a perovskite bulk defect density of 1 × 1017 cm−3. Light intensity analysis demonstrated a correlation between incident light reduction and device performance decay. Capacitance–Voltage (C-V) and Mott–Schottky (M-S) have been analyzed during the study. Finally, the total recombination of the optimized device concerning thickness has been analyzed along with the dark J-V characteristics. The comprehensive insights gained from this work are anticipated to accelerate the fabrication of mixed Ge-Sn based PSCs with improved efficiency, paving the way for commercialization in the photovoltaic industry.

    Roles of Inorganic Oxide Based HTMs Towards Highly Efficient and Long-Term Stable PSC—A Review

    In just a few years, the efficiency of perovskite-based solar cells (PSCs) has risen to 25.8%, making them competitive with current commercial technology. Due to the inherent advantage of perovskite thin films that can be fabricated using simple solution techniques at low temperatures, PSCs are regarded as one of the most important low-cost and mass-production prospects. The lack of stability, on the other hand, is one of the major barriers to PSC commercialization. The goal of this review is to highlight the most important aspects of recent improvements in PSCs, such as structural modification and fabrication procedures, which have resulted in increased device stability. The role of different types of hole transport layers (HTL) and the evolution of inorganic HTL including their fabrication techniques have been reviewed in detail in this review. We eloquently emphasized the variables that are critical for the successful commercialization of perovskite devices in the final section. To enhance perovskite solar cell commercialization, we also aimed to obtain insight into the operational stability of PSCs, as well as practical information on how to increase their stability through rational materials and device fabrication.

    Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells: Issues and Prospects

    Even though power conversion efficiency has already reached 25.8%, poor stability is one of the major challenges hindering the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Several initiatives, such as structural modification and fabrication techniques by numerous ways, have been employed by researchers around the world to achieve the desired level of stability. The goal of this review is to address the recent improvements in PSCs in terms of structural modification and fabrication procedures. Perovskite films are used to provide a broad range of stability and to lose up to 20% of their initial performance. A thorough comprehension of the effect of the fabrication process on the device's stability is considered to be crucial in order to provide the foundation for future attempts. We summarize several commonly used fabrication techniques – spin coating, doctor blade, sequential deposition, hybrid chemical vapor, and alternating layer-by-layer. The evolution of device structure from regular to inverted, HTL free, and ETL including the changes in material utilization from organic to inorganic, as well as the perovskite material are presented in a systematic manner. We also aimed to gain insight into the functioning stability of PSCs, as well as practical information on how to increase their operational longevity through sensible device fabrication and materials processing, to promote PSC commercialization at the end.

    Teaching english through mobile phone: bridging teachers and students in distance learning

    Managing English classes in Bangladesh like many other developing countries is difficult because most of the classrooms are overcrowded. So many learners lag behind as their teachers cannot monitor their progress along with the competencies. To overcome this gap, the privileged groups of students take many other extra supports where as the learners from the underprivileged areas suffer a lot due to the scarcity of the supports outside the classroom. According to the recent report of education ministryon the result of the public exams,the students of rural areas are always far behind the students of urban area. Additional help or private coaching is one of the reasons which make this difference when quality English teacher is a dire need and teaching turns to commercial service rather than professional. Teaching English through mobile can be a supplementary method to first generation learners in remote area who are excluded from regular services of mainstream education. ‘mEducation’ is an intervention of BRAC and BRAC Institute of Languages( BIL) to address of this problem. This study reflects the voices of the beneficiaries and stakeholders of a project that aims to ensure the access and cater the services for inclusion of the outreach children and teachers which is almost free. This study also shows how mEducation includes the excluded community through a very simple feature phone with intellectual minds creating substantial learning network and knowledge transfer.

    Teaching english through mobile phone: bridging teachers and students in distance learning

    Managing English classes in Bangladesh like many other developing countries is difficult because most of the classrooms are overcrowded. So many learners lag behind as their teachers cannot monitor their progress along with the competencies. To overcome this gap, the privileged groups of students take many other extra supports where as the learners from the underprivileged areas suffer a lot due to the scarcity of the supports outside the classroom. According to the recent report of education ministryon the result of the public exams,the students of rural areas are always far behind the students of urban area.
