Item Adopting lean product development in new production system introduction process for sustainable operational performance(Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, 2024-05-06) Islam, Md HasibulThis research explores adopting the lean product development (LPD) concept in the new production system introduction process (NPSIP) to achieve both pre-launching and post-launching operational performance considering sustainability aspects. An empirical study was conducted in a multinational pharmaceutical company, having lean practice for over a decade. Two case projects for launching the new production system were followed in retrospect, and data was collected by interviewing experts. In the case company, evidence were found regarding adoption of soft lean practices in the NPSIP, however, lack of adoption of hard lean practices. Several challenges were identified that hinder achieving both pre-launching and post-launching operational performance, which could be mitigated by adopting LPD practices. This paper contributes to the broad lean literature by expanding its implication within the NPSIP context. Additionally, a set of LPD principles and practices is proposed that could be adopted in the NPSIP context. Adopting the LPD principles and practices in the NPSIP, manufacturing companies can launch a new production system faster, and achieve target sustainable operational performance faster, resulting in additional competitive advantage.Item Exploring sustainable plastic management behavior among young consumers in Bangladesh(Springer Nature, 2024) Islam, Md Hasibul; Anam, Md. Zahidul; Islam, Md. TamzidulTo tackle the uprising plastic pollution, it is essential for consumers to cut consumption and properly discard plastic waste in their daily lives. However, there is limited literature exploring factors that influence sustainable plastic management behavior (SPMB) in the context of developing countries. Moreover, while individuals’ environmental goals impact habitual pro-environmental behavior, their interaction with other cognitive and non-cognitive factors remains unexplored. This study develops a theoretical model to predict SPMB by integrating individual environmental goals with factors from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the Norm Activation Model (NAM), and the Theory of Interpersonal Behavior (TIB). The data were gathered by surveying 336 respondents from Dhaka and was examined using the partial least squares structural equation modeling. The outcomes show that individuals’ environmental goals significantly impact their intentions. In addition, moral norms were found to be a strong precursor to intention, influencing the formation of environmental goals. The results also indicate that having strong environmental goals leads to SPMB, irrespective of the availability or paucity of facilities and convenience. This paper theoretically contributes by highlighting how an individual’s environmental goal interplays with other factors, impacting pro-environmental behavior. The findings could be utilized by policymakers to fight plastic pollution.Item Exploring sustainable plastic management behavior among young consumers in Bangladesh(Elsevier, 2024-07-07) Islam, Md Hasibul; Md. Mahiuddin SabbirDespite literature suggesting the importance of goals and motivation in pro-environmental behavior, its impli- cation for predicting consumers’ sustainable plastic management behavior (SPMB) is limited. This paper adopted the Theory of Reasoned Goal Pursuit (TRGP) to predict young consumers’ SPMB, which includes plastic con- sumption reduction and proper disposal of plastic waste. Data was collected by surveying 336 respondents from a developing country - Bangladesh. Partial least square-based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyze data. The result shows a significant impact of active procurement and approval goals on attitude and subjective norms, respectively, that lead to the formation of motivation. Furthermore, it was found that in- dividuals’ motivation significantly impacts their intention, eventually leading to pro-environmental behavior (i. e., SPMB). This research contributes by providing deeper insight into the underlying mechanism of how the active procurement goal (i.e., pro-environmental goals), active approval goal, and motivation interact with other factors to reshape individuals’ SPMB. In addition, this paper provides further evidence on the implication of TRGP in habitual type pro-environmental behavior context. Finally, this paper offers solid suggestions for practitioners to promote circular economy practices at the consumer level to fight against plastic pollution.Item Role of Habit in Household Waste Recycling Behavior: Evidence from an Emerging Country(IIETA, 2024-06-01) Islam, Md Tamzidul; Islam, Md Hasibul; Kamal, Md AsifThis paper explores the inter-relationship between cognitive and non-cognitive factors that form an individual’s household recycling behavior. Habit, a noncognitive factor, is combined as an additional construct with the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Data was collected from 467 eco-friendly consumers residing in economically emerging country- Bangladesh and analyzed using the partial least square-based structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Result showed significant direct impact of individual's habit and perceived behavioral control (PBC) on actual recycling behavior of household waste. When forming recycling intention, individual’s habit was found to be more dominant compared to the attitude, subjective norms and PBC. In addition, it was found that habit is significantly impacted by the PBC. However, the moderating role of habit towards the linkage of recycling intention to actual behavior was found insignificant. The paper provides significant contribution for the practitioners and policy makers to focus on forming individual habits to promote sustainable recycling behavior from an emerging country context.Item Sustaining e-waste recycling behavior among young consumers to implement circular economy: An extended model of Theory of Reasoned Goal Pursuit(Elsevier, 2025-01-17) Islam, Md Hasibul; Sabbir, Md. MahiuddinDespite extensive literature identifying various factors influencing consumers’ e-waste recycling behavior (EWRB), sustaining such behavior remains a challenge. This paper aims to explore how personal goals and motivation shape individuals’ EWRB. An extended model of the Theory of Reasoned Goal Pursuit (TRGP) was developed by integrating the Norm Activation Model (NAM) and Behavioral Reasoning Theory (BRT). Data was collected surveying young consumers in a developing country and analyzed using the structural equation modeling technique. The results show that motivation is the strongest immediate predictor of the intention to engage in EWRB, and it is significantly influenced by individuals’ active pro-environmental goal (APG) and active approval goal (AAG). The impact of APG on EWRB was found to be greater than that of AAG. Additionally, moral norm significantly influences APG, suggesting that it serves as a determinant of APG. The findings also indicate that when eco-awareness, sense of responsibility and moral norm collectively form APG, it exerts the more significant impact on EWRB. Furthermore, perceived risk was found to significantly moderate the relationship between intention and EWRB, widening the intention-behavior gap. This paper contributes by applying the TRGP in the context of EWRB and enhancing our understanding of how personal goals interact with other factors that influence EWRB. The paper also discusses the limitations of the TRGP and presents a novel extended TRGP model to address these limitations.
