Item A study of slow-release N-carrters on rice(Journal of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, 1987) Rashid, M. H.; Islam, A.; Ahmed, I. U.; Islam, M. S.; Mandal, R.A field experiment was carried out to monitor the relative efficiency of urea, urea formaldehyde (UF), sulphur coated urea (SCU) and isobutylidene diurea (IBDU) each at the rate of 40, 80 and 120 kg N/ha on growth, yield and chemical composition of rice grown during aman season. Application of nitrogen caused a significant increase in number of tillers, height and yields of straw and grain irrespective of the sources. Among the chemical composition (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) of straw and grain only N content was significantly improved. All these components increased with nitrogen rate. The effectiveness of the N-carriers in increasing the parameters followed the order: SCU> Urea> IB DU > UF. Percent recovery of added nitrogen generally decreased with increasing amount of nitrogen. SCU was found to be superior to conventional urea whereas IBDU and UF were inferior due to slow release of nitrogen. Anaerobic incubation of urea, UF, SCU and IBDU for 4 weeks caused a significant release of NH4-N from 59.9 to 78.2%. An initial rapid production of NH4-N was followed by a gradual release with time. More than 75% urea and SCU decomposed to NH4-N within 2 and 4 weeks respectively. UF was more resistant to decomposition as compared to SCU and IBDU. However, the trend of degradation was similar for all the compounds. Accumulation of a small quantity of NO3-N disappeared rapidly within 2 weeks time.Item Abundance of aeromonas spp. in various components of pond ecoysystems in Dhaka, Bangladesh(1992) Islam, M. S.; Alam, M.J.; Tzipori, S.Item ANTIDIABETIC EFFECT OF ALOE VERA IN ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETIC RAT(Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), 2022-12) Islam, M. S.; Sarkar, S. K.; Hossain, M. M.; Masum, M. A.; Rahman, T.Oral anti-diabetic agents have a number of serious adverse effects, thus, managing diabetes without any side effects is still a challenge. Therefore, the search for many effective and safer hypoglycemic agents has continued to be an important area of investigation. Besides, drug classically used for the treatment of diabetes (insulin, sulphonylureas, biguanides and thazolidinediones), several species of plants have been described in the scientific and popular literatures having a hypoglycemic activity. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of Aloe vera on blood glucose level in rats in diabetic condition. In this study a total of 150 rats (50 normal rats and 100 alloxan induced diabetic rats) were used for five trials. The rats were divided into three groups for each trial, each containing 10 individuals as follows: Group A is the control, Group B as diabetic control and Group C were diabetic rat received Aloe vera. Then alloxan injection was injected at a dose rate of 100 mg/kg body weight through intra-peritoneal route to each rat to induce diabetes in groups B and C. Aqueous extract of Aloe vera were fed by gavage at a dose of 300 mg/kg body weight daily for 21 days in group C. On the 10th day blood glucose level and the body weights were measured for the first time to ensure diabetic induction. Then all the rats of this group were kept for more 21 days for the treatment of diabetic condition. During experimental period, day 0, 7, 14 and 21 blood samples were collected from all groups and determined their blood sugar level using diabetic kit. After 3 weeks of treatment the blood glucose level significantly (P<0.001) reduced in the group C compared to B from 260± 11.53 mg/dl to 91.21 ± 3.67 mg/dl. On the other hand, the average body weight was increased significantly (P<0.001) from 260 gm to 279.88 gm in the group C compared to that of B. From our findings, it is concluded that Aloe vera can be used as anti-diabetogenic agent in food.Item APPRAISAL OF SUIT ABILITY OF SHEEP CARCASS IN A COMMERCIAL SLAUGHTER HOUSE(2011) Hossain, M. M.; Rahman, M. A.; Talukder, A. K.; Islam, M. S.The study identified the common causes of organs and whole carcass condemnation of slaughtered sheep in a commercial abattoir in Bangladesh. A total number of 8046 sheep were slaughtered during the period from July 2007 to June 2008. Animals were undertaken into three ante-mortem inspections from arrival to slaughter. The first inspection was done immediately after unloading of animal, second during resting of the animals and the last inspection was performed before slaughtering of the animals. A total number of 703 organs from carcasses were condemned due to several reasons. The liver (42%) and lungs (39.1) were the most condemned organs in sheep. Fascioliasis was the leading cause of liver condemnation in sheep (86.8%). Pneumonia was the main cause of lung condemnations at the rate of 54.5% in sheep. Hydatidiosis caused both liver (6.4%) and lungs (40%) condemnation in sheep. Abscess was also responsible for organ condemnation affecting liver (6.8%), lungs (5.5%) and kidney (30.8%) in sheep. The major cause of muscles condemnation of sheep were due to cystocercosis (75.0%) and grass seed poisoning especially sorghum poisoning (25.0%).Grass seed poisoning was the only cause that was responsible for three sheep carcass whole condemnation. M. S.; Rahman, G. K. M. M.; Haque, M. M.Due to low organic mailer content the agricultural soils of Bangladesh has poor physical and chemical condition. Moreover, the continuous use of phosphorus (P) fertilizers build-up of excessive P in many cultivated soils has created an interest in the combined use of organic and inorganic P fertilizer. Hence, a field experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Farm, Gazipur, Bangladesh during the Aman season of July 2008 to January 2009 to investigate the effects of combined application of inorganic phosphorus (Pi) and organic phosphorus (1),,)on the changes of physical and chemical properties of soil after T. Aman cultivation. The eight treatments were To, Control/ no fertilizers; T" recommended dose offertilizers; Tz, 50% P through TSP and 50% P through cowdung; T), 75% P through TSP and 25% P through cowdung; T" 50% P through TSP and 50% P through poultry manure; Ts, 75% P through TSP and 25% P through poultry manure; To, 50% P through TSP and 50% P through household wastes; T1, 75% P through TSP and 25% P through household wastes. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated thrice. The physical and chemical properties of the soils were influenced directly by the above mentioned treatments. The physical properties of soil such as particle density and bulk density at different soil depth and plough pan decreased in response to addition of organic matters whereas no significant changes were found in response to inorganic P. The rate of improvement of chemical properties such as organic carbon (OC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), total nitrogen, available Phosphorus (P), exchangeable potassium (K), available sulphur(S), exchangeable calcium (Ca), exchangeable magnesium (Mg) and exchangeable sodium (Na) was higher with inorganic plus organic amendment than to inorganic alone. In addition, soil pH decreased in all treatments. Based on the above results it is suggested that the combined use of inorganic and organic P significantly improve physical and chemical properties of post harvest T. Problems frequently occur due to the use of low-quality bricks & sands. Bricks & sand that do not fulfil the quality standards make structures weak & faulty. Different field and laboratory tests are needed for quality control of these engineering materials. This study covers the experimental investigation sand and brick samples collected from ten different local areas of Chittagong district. These materials were tested through field and laboratory tests to assess their engineering properties in order to compare with standard limiting values. Unit weight, Fineness modulus, Salinity, Water Absorption Capacity, Specific gravity and Chloride tests were conducted for sand. Whereas Field Test, Size & Shape, Salinity, Chloride, Unit Weight, Water Absorption and Crushing Strength tests were performed for Bricks in the laboratory of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology. The properties of brick and sand samples are observed to vary for different sources. However, the test data may provide necessary information to ensure quality of construction works in this region.Item Constraints Faced by Rural Women in Changing Livelihoods in Bangladesh: A Study on the Impact of Microcredit through PDBF(Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension Economics & Sociology, 2024-10) Islam, M. M.The main purpose of the study is to determine the extent of the constraints faced by the women beneficiaries of Palli Daridro Bimochon Foundation (PDBF) on their socio-economic development and to explore the relationship between the socio-economic characteristics of the beneficiaries and their constraints. A total of 3436 women beneficiaries of three upazilas under 55 districts of PDBF constituted the population of the study. A face-to-face interview survey was conducted to collect data from the randomly selected 346 respondents. Among the 13 selected problem items, ‘high rate of interest’ was ranked first (70.81%), ‘more savings have to be deposited while taking the loan’ was ranked second (68.69%) and third (68.40%) was ‘various income generating activities and social development training are inadequate’ The findings revealed a significant relationship between training exposures, decision-making ability, savings deposit, income-generating activities, communication & network, and constraints faced by PDBF beneficiaries. Therefore, the PDBF authorities should consider significant factors in reducing the constraints faced by rural women to change their livelihoods.Item DIAGNOSIS AND PRESCRIPTION FOR MANAGEMENT OF BACTERIAL WILT OF POTATO(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2018-07) Islam, M. S.; Khan, R. M. I.; Fatema, K.; Alam, M. Z.; Islam, M. R.The experiments were carried out during 2009 to 20]3 on diagnosis and prescriptions for management of bacterial wilt of potato. The studies were undertaken in 250 growers from five locations viz. Mymensingh Sadar. Kushtia Sadar, Kumarkhali, Chandina and Sher-e-Bangia Nagar. The highest and lowest incidence (20.8'*) and (l2.6o/~) of bacterial wilt of potato was recorded at Marichar Char and Kushtia Sadar. Rulstonia solanaceanun produced bacterial wilt of potato disease. The prescription given by Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic (PDDC) was effective ill the farmcrs field against the disease. From this studv it may be prescripred that the Cupravit-50 WP [Copper-oxchloride (CuOCl,li @ 7 gll sprayed 4 times around root zone at 15 days interval with first time application of 50 gm mixed terti lizer (Ash: KCl=20: I) per plant for the management of bacterial wilt of potato. It was also revealed that the practices reduced the disease incidence by 80.79% over control. The yield increased by 84.57% and benefit cost ratio (BCR) was 4.62.Item EF.FECT OF SALINITY ON MINERAL CONTENT IN DIFFERENT PLANT PARTS OF RICE GENOTYPES(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2008-07) Razzaquc, M. K.The effect of salinity on mineral content in stem, leaf sheath, leaf blade and grain of rice genotypes differing in salt tolerant (The genotypes PVSBI9, PVSB9. PNR519. PNR381. Iratom24 and Pokkali representing salt tolerant and NS 15 representing salt-sensitive) were studied in an experiment conducted in two factors Completely Randomized Design. The susceptible genotype NS 15 showed higher concentration of Na', Cl, Ca" and Mg ' and lower amount of K' in stem, leaf sheath and leaf blade of rice compared to tolerant ones. The concentration of Na', Ca". Mg" and Cl followed an increasing pattern in different plant parts of all the selected rice genotypes due to increasing salinity levels except Cal+ and Mgl' in grain, where these two ions decreased with increasing salinity levels. But the concentration of K' showed decreasing pattern in stem, leaf sheath, leaf blade and grain with increasing salinity levels. In different plant parts, the Na+ and cr content increased very sharply and K' decreased very rapidly in susceptible genotype as compared to other genotypes. The highest amount of Na+ and K' were obtained in stem followed by leaf sheath, leaf blade and grain at different salinity levels. M.A field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of combined use of organic and inorganic phosphorus (P) sources on yield contributing characters, yield and nutrient use et1iciency of T. Aman rice. Eight treatments including a control, a recommended doses of inorganic fertilizers and six other treatments which were combinations of inorganic and organic fertilizers where 50 % and 75 % of recommended doses of P were provided by using triple super phosphate (TSP) and the remaining 50 % and 25 % of P were amended by using either cowdung (CD), poultry manure (PM) or household waste (HW). The nutrient P as per treatments and nitrogen (N), potassium (K) and zinc (Zn) as per recommended dose were applied. Combined application of inorganic and organic sources of P significantly increased the yield and yield contributing characters ofT. Aman. The effect of PM was prominent than that of CD and HW. The treatment T. receiving 50 % P through TSP and 50 % P through PM produced the highest grain yield of T. Aman rice (4.34 tlha) and also showed the highest % recovery efficiencies (RE), agronomic et1iciencies (AE) kg/kg, physiological efficiencies(PE) kg/kg and internal efficiencies (IE) kg/kg of nitrogen(N) but failed to increase the physiological efficiencies(PE) kg/kg and internal efficiencies (IE) kg/kg of phosphorus(P).Thus, the present study indicated that the use of both organic and inorganic source of P is an effective way to enhance the yield and increase the nutrient use et1iciency (NUE) for T. Aman rice.Item EXPRESSION PATTERNS OF AN ABIOTIC STRESS-INDUCIBLE ETHYLENE RESPONSIVE FACTOR-4 GENE, LeERF4, IN TOMATO(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2011) Islam, M. S.; Siddikee, M. A.; Knarr, A. A.; Wang, M. H.A full length cDNA encoding Lycopersicum esculentum ethylene responsive factor-4 (designated as LeERF4) was isolated and investigated the expression pattern of LeERF4 in tomato plant under different abiotic stresses from the tomato plant. Phylogenetic analysis based on the deduced amino acid sequence of the LeERF4 cDNA from tomato revealed a high sequence similarity to other ethylene responsive genes. Southern blot analysis showed that LeERF4 is a duplicate copy gene in the tomato genome. The organ specific expression profiling indicated that LeERF4 was expressed in all tested organs. The highest expression was found in young leaves and flowers compared to other tested organs. Northern blot analysis revealed that various environmental stresses such as salt, drought, coldness, ethylene and MY induced significant expression of LeERF4 but not expressed by the treatment of ABA. These results suggested that the LcERF4 plays an important role in tomato responses to abiotic stress and may be useful in improving plant tolerance to abiotic stressItem FARMERS' CHARACTERISTICS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PARTICIPATION IN LIVESTOCK AND POULTRY DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES OF BAUEC(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2008-07) Atam, M. F.The study was undertaken to assess the intluence of the farmers' characteristics on their participation in livestock and poultry development activities of BAUEC. Random sampling method was used to collect the data through personal interview method from 120 farmers of nine villages of Mymensingh district. Significant positive relationship was found between age, family size, farm size, annual income, attitude towards BAUEC and agricultural knowledge of the respondents and their participation in livestock and poultry development programme. About two fifth (40.80%) of the respondents had low participation, 28.30% had medium and 30.900;., had high participation in livestock and poultry development activities of BAUEC.Item GENOTYPE-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION AND STABILITY ANALYSIS OF CHILLI (Capsicum frutescens L.)(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2014-07) Islam, M. R.An investigation was performed for assessment of genotype-environment interaction and stability of the 10 promising genotypes of Chilli on plant height, root length, individual fruit weight, fresh weight of shoot, oven dry weight of shoot and fruit yield per plant with ten promising chilli (Capsicum frutescens L.) genotypes. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications and four environments. The combined analysis of variance showed that the mean sum of square due to Genotype (G), Environment (E) and G x E interaction were significant for all the characters studied here suggesting presence of significant variation among the genotypes and environments. The additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) biplot for yield clearly indicated that Env-3 (Urea + TSP + MOP + Boric Acid) and Env-4 (only Cow dung) were poor and Env-I (Urea + TSP + MOP + Gypsum+ ZnO) and Env-2 (Urea + TSP + MOP + Cow dung) were found to be rich and favourable due to high inputs for chilli production. Where, Env-2 (Urea + TSP + MOP + Cow dung) was found highly favourable for chilli production. The stable genotypes found were BD-2059 and Bogura Jatt, exhibited moderate mean yield and could be adopted for general cultivation. Kalo Dhawna morich, Bogurar Lomba Morich and Bullet exhibited comparatively higher mean yield but were unstable across the environments and can be recommended to cultivate in rich environments.Item INFLUENCE OF PLANT POPULATION AND WEED MANAGEMENT PERIODS ON CROP-WEED COMPETITION OF GROUNDNUT(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2011) Islam, M. S.; Akhter, M. M.; Haque, M. M.; Islam, M. S.; Saneokaoka, H.Population density and weed competition in crops constitute the main limiting factors for groundnut crop yields in Bangladesh. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during April to August, 2008 to investigate the optimum population density and the most appropriate weeding period of groundnut. Two plant population viz. i) 200,000 (D,) and ii) 400,000 plants ha·1 (D2) and seven weed competition periods viz. i) No weed competition (Well), ii) weed competition for the first 25 DAS and thereafter weed tree (we I), iii) weed competition for the first 40 DAS and thereafter weed free (We2), iv) weed competition for the tirst 55 DAS and thereafter weed tree (We), v) weed competition tor the first 70 DAS and thereafter weed tree (WC4), vi) weed competition for the first 85 DAS and thereafter weed tree (Wes) and vii) weed competition up to harvesting (WC.) were studied. It was evident from the result that yield and yield contributing all characters except number of primary branches, total pods and mature pods, were increased at a plant density of 400000 plants ha·'. Weed competition period for the first 40 DAS and thereafter weed free up to crop harvest emerged out positive responses on yield and yield contributing characters.Item Lactic acid bacteria and their beneficial effects in fermented dairy products(Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), 2022-01) Rahman, A.; Akter, M.; Islam, M. S.; Rahman, A.; Biswas, L.; Asaduzzaman, M.The main focus of this review is the investigation of the roles of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in fermented food prepared from dairy sources. LAB has been used extensively in food fermentation across the globe as potential microorganisms. Around the world, several species of LAB are employed as starter cultures in several fermented dairy products. Fermentation of milk and milk products involves the LAB genera Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Leuconostoc, Pediococcus, and Lactococcus. LAB can be widely employed in developing novel fermented milk products, given the existing knowledge of its numerous health-promoting properties. LAB is widely known as a natural approach to the fermentation of food and enhancing a healthy life. In recent years, there has been a surge of interest in researching LAB to know more about their effects on starter culture or probiotic activity. From a microbiological viewpoint, the diversity of LAB involved in different fermented dairy products are extensive. LAB identified in fermented products could be assessed for their potential beneficial properties to enhance the quality of the product produced. So, the study's goals are to learn about the most recent studies on LAB, which is found in fermented dairy products, as well as their characteristics and health benefits.Item MANAGEMENT OF LATE BLIGHT OF TOMATO(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2009-01) Islam, M. S.Disease management model for late blight (Phytophthora infestans) of tomato (Rorna YF.) was developed to increase productivity. The experiment was conducted during the winter season of 2001-2002, in the field laboratory of the Department of Plant Pathology, BAU, Mymensingh, following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) comprising six replications with combination of treatments viz; T, (control: no management); T1 (sanitation: removal of disease parts from plants), T, (using fungicide, Ridomil MZ-68 @ 0.2%) and T. (combined use of sanitation with fungicide spray). Significant differences were observed among the treatments regarding disease incidence, severity and fruit yield. The highest disease incidence (88.34%) and severity (84.33%) were recorded at 90 days after treatment in control (T,). The combined effect of sanitation with spraying fungicide (T.) reduced late blight disease incidence and severity by 96.22% and 90.65%, respectively over control. The highest fruit yield 80.66 t/ha was obtained by T. compared with the lowest (41.80 t/ha) in control (T,). The combined application of sanitation with fungicide spray increased 93.01 % fruit yield over control. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) resulted the lowest (8.15) in T, treatment and the highest (23.87) in T, treatment. A small amount of arsenic remains in living organisms, but its exposure at elevated concentrations is hazardous and thus creates a toxic effect. Evidence has shown that the level of arsenic in Bangladeshi foodstuffs is higher than the permissible limits set by the World Health Organization and other regulatory bodies in Bangladesh. Previously published reports show that the transport and abundance of arsenic create potential threats to the fresh and processed products of Bangladesh. However, monitoring and assessment of arsenic toxicity in the exposure sources are lacking. Although severe contamination of arsenic in the environmental matrices and numerous foodstuffs has been summarized, a perilous appraisal concerning trophic transfer and arsenic exposure through environmental matrices in Bangladesh has not yet been accomplished. This review critically discussed arsenic pollution, exposure toxicity, unexploited research gaps and prevailing legislation for pollution control. This study also highlighted the potential transfer of arsenic within the food webs, and sustainable strategies for arsenic pollution control to enhance food safety as a vital issue in Bangladesh. Furthermore, the current review urgently recommends formulating a conceptual policy framework to combat arsenic contamination in Bangladesh’s environment.
