    ADOPTION OF SELECTED TRANSPLANTED AMAN TECHNOLOGIES BY THE FARMERS

    The main purpose of the study was to determine the extent of adoption of selected T. Aman technologies and to explore its relationship with the selected characteristics of the farmers. The study was conducted in two villages of Pingna union under Sarishabari upazilla of Jamalpur district. Data were collected from randomly selected 130 T. Aman growers during 12'h August to 18'" October, 2006. Findings revealed that overwhelming majority (80 %) of the farmers were found to have medium to high adoption while only 20 % farmers belonged to low adoption of selected T. Aman technologies. Data also revealed that among eight selected characteristics, education, farm size, annual family income, organizational participation and extension media contact were found to have positive significant relationships with their adoption of selected T. Aman technologies. Other variables namely age, commercialization and cosmopolitness had no signiticant relationship with their adoption of selected T. Aman technologies.

    Design and analysis of four elements E, H and combined E-H shaped microstrip patch array antenna for wireless applications

    In this paper, different shaped patch antenna and their array configurations have been designed and simulated by using advanced designed system (ADS) in order to improve the overall performance of microstrip patch antenna (MP A). FR4 dielectric material is used as substrate which has a dielectric constant of 4.4 and height of the dielectric substrate is 1 mm and loss tangent, tan δ is 0. Antennas are fed through 50 Ω microstrip feed line. Each array consists of corresponding four single elements. Different antenna performance parameters like return loss, bandwidth, directivity, gain & radiation efficiency were analyzed for all the proposed antennas.

    DIAGNOSIS AND PRESCRIPTION FOR MANAGEMENT OF BACTERIAL WILT OF POTATO

    The experiments were carried out during 2009 to 20]3 on diagnosis and prescriptions for management of bacterial wilt of potato. The studies were undertaken in 250 growers from five locations viz. Mymensingh Sadar. Kushtia Sadar, Kumarkhali, Chandina and Sher-e-Bangia Nagar. The highest and lowest incidence (20.8'*) and (l2.6o/~) of bacterial wilt of potato was recorded at Marichar Char and Kushtia Sadar. Rulstonia solanaceanun produced bacterial wilt of potato disease. The prescription given by Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic (PDDC) was effective ill the farmcrs field against the disease. From this studv it may be prescripred that the Cupravit-50 WP [Copper-oxchloride (CuOCl,li @ 7 gll sprayed 4 times around root zone at 15 days interval with first time application of 50 gm mixed terti lizer (Ash: KCl=20: I) per plant for the management of bacterial wilt of potato. It was also revealed that the practices reduced the disease incidence by 80.79% over control. The yield increased by 84.57% and benefit cost ratio (BCR) was 4.62.

    EFFECT OF FUNGICIDES, BOTANICALS AND NUTRIENTS ON PURPLE BLOTCH OF ONION

    A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the nine treatments using botanicals, nutrients and fungicides against purple blotch of onion caused by Alternaria porri. Both fungicides and botanicals were used as seed bulb treatments and foliar spray while the three nutrients B, Sand Zn were applied to the soil of unit plots under all treatments as basal dose except control. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design CRCBD) comprising three replications. The highest reduction of disease severity of purple blotch of onion was obtained by the application of Rovral 50 WP @ 0.2% in combination of nutrients followed by Ridomil Gold MZ-72 @ 0.2% with nutrients and gave the maximum height of umbel stalk, number of onion seed stalk", number of umbel plot", umbel diameter, 1000 seed weight and seed-yield, The highest onion seed yield 650 kg ha" was recorded from the application of Rovral 50 WP @ 0.2% combination with nutrients followed by 590 kg ha-I from Ridomil Gold MZ-72 @ 0.2% adding with nutrients. Neem leaf extract gave the better performance than Allamanda leaf extract in reducing the disease incidence, severity and increasing seed yield and improving yield contributing characters of onion. The most effective fungicide was Rovral 50 WP followed . by Ridomil Gold MZ-72 and Dithane M-45 gave 61.11, 48.15 and 42.65% reduction in disease severity and 58.64,43.90 and 39.83% increase in seed yield, respectively. At least eight sprays with seven days interval are required to achieve satisfactory results.

    EFFECT OF SEED TREATMENT WITH SOME BOTANICALS ON SEEDLING GROWTH AND SEVERITY OF BIPOLARIS LEAF BLIGHT (Bipolaris sorokiniana) OF WHEAT

    An experiment was conducted to find out the effect of 13 botanicals on seedling growth and severity of Bipolaris leaf blight (Bipolaris sorokinianov of wheat in a net house of Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during November 2006 to March 2007. It was found that seed treatment with Allium cepa, A. sativum, Curcuma longa, Aegle marmelos, Lawsonia alba. Allamanda cathanica extracts caused considerable increase in germination and seedling growth. Pre-sowing treatment of seeds with all of the plant extracts caused significant reduction in disease severity over control. The severity index values under control were 1.55.2.00.3.22.4.55,4.66 and 4.66, respectively at flag leaf. booting, panicle initiation, !lowering, milk and hard dough stages of wheat plants. Seed treatment with the materials reduced disease severity within the range of 0.33-1.22,0.99-1.77. 1.11-2.00. 1.22-2.22. 1.66- 3.00 and 200-3.83. respectively for the above mentioned growth stronges of the crop.

    EFFECT OF SOME SELECTED ECO-FRIENDLY TREATMENTS ON LEAF BLIGHT (Bipolaris sorokiniana) SEVERITY AND GRAIN YIELD OF WHEAT

    An Experiment was conducted during 2006-2007 to study the effect of some eco-friendly treatments on severity of leaf bight (Bipolnris sorokinianm, number and weight of grain per spike and grain health of wheat. Seeds of wheat variety Kanchan were collected from a farmer of Bansal district. Apparently healthy seeds were sorted out from the seed lot. Both unsorted and apparently healthy seeds were treated with hot water at 50°C for 5 minutes, brine solution (2% wlv NaCI) for 15 minutes, sun drying for 14 hours and polythene solarization for 14 hours. Unsorted and apparently healthy seeds were planted and 0.05% boron solution was applied as foliar spray at tillering stage. Two checks were maintained, unsorted and apparently healthy seeds, and planted without any treatment. At all stages of data collection. the highest severity of leaf blight on flag leaf and penultimate leaf were recorded under control. where unsorted and untreated seeds were planted followed by the treatment where apparently healthy seeds were planted without any treatment. Other treatments caused significant reduction in leaf blight severity and percentage of diseased seeds as compared to control. The treatments gave significant increase in number and weight of grain per spike and percentage of healthy grain. Considering the above parameters, pre-sowing treatment of apparently healthy seeds with hot water, brine or sundrying were noted as effective ceo-friendly methods to reduce leaf blight severity and to increase grain yield and healthy seeds of wheat.

    EFFECTIVENESS OF INFORMATION SOURCES AS PERCEIVED BY THE SUB-ASSISTANT AGRICULTURE OFFICERS

    The specific objective of the study was to determine the effectiveness of information sources as perceived by the Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officers (SAAOs). Attempts were also made to determine eight selected characteristics of the SAAOs and their relationship with effectiveness of information sources. Ten in formation sources were considered in this study for measuring effectiveness. Data were collected from a sample of 100 SAAOs of the five Upazilas of Chapainawabgonj district. Pearson's correlation co-efficient was used to determine the relationships between the dependent and independent variables. It was revealed from the study that majority (90 percent) of the respondents' opined that these information sources were moderate to highly effective compared to only 10 percent of the respondents' opined these sources were less effective. In respect of relationship between dependent and independent variables it was revealed that except age and annual family income of the respondents all other characteristics such as service length, training received, organizational participation. job facilities. attitude towards rice production technologies and use of communication media were found to be significant.

    EFFECTIVENESS OF SOME INSECTICIDES ON INFEST ATION AND YIELD AGAINST BRINJAL SHOOT AND FRUIT BORER

    An experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University, Bangladesh during December 2005 to May 2006 to evaluate one organophosphate. one carbamate and two synthetic pyrethroid insecticides for their effectiveness to control brinjal shoot and fruit borer (Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee). The study comprising five treatments including a control and laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (ReBD). Among the treatments, T, (marshal 20EC applied at 28 days after transplanting and applied at 7 days interval) performed best in terms of reduction of shoot and fruit infestation, on the other hand it increased fruit yield. It gave 65.18% reduction in shoot infestation and 95.38% reduction in fruit infestation over control with the highest yield of24.55 t/ha.

    EFFECTS OF IRRIGATION WATER AND SOIL ADDED ARSENIC ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF CROPS IN RICE-RICE CROPPING PATTERN

    A field Experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm during January 2004 to December 2005 in order to examine the adverse effect of As in rice. Boro-T, Aman-Boro-T. Aman rice crops were grown in sequence. There were five treatments consisting of 0, I, 2 ppm As added with irrigation water, 10 and 20 ppm As added to soil. Arsenic treatments were applied in Boro crops. The As contamination of soil either through irrigation water or directly to soil significantly affected the yield and yield components of Boro and T. Aman rice. Application of As added to the Boro rice had significant residual effects on the T. Aman rice. The irrigation water and soil added As depressed the plant height, number of tillers, filled grains panicle", 1000-grain weight, straw and grain yields of Boro and T. Aman rice. The grain yield reduction over the cropping seasons and treatments varied from 8.2 to 80% as compared to control treatment.

    EFFICACY OF FIVE FUNGICIDES, THREE PLANT EXTRACTS AND A BIOAGENT IN CONTROLLING DIE BACK OF CITRUS CAUSED BY COLLETOTRICHUM GLOEOSPORIOIDES

    An investigation was undertaken to find out the effect of five fungicides, three plant extracts and a bioagent on the incidence and severity of dieback of citrus caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Five fungicides namely Dithane M45 (0.3%), Ridomil MZ-72 (0.2%), Bavistin 50 WP (0.1 %), Champion 77 WP (0.25%) and Bordeaux mixture (I %), three plant extracts viz. Bishkatali (Polygonum hydropiper) leaf extract, Garlic (Allium sativum) clove extract and Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract and one bioagent (Trichoderma harzianum T,,) were tested as foliar spray for six times to control the disease. The highest reduction of dieback severity (PDI) was obtained with Dithane M45 (73.46%), which was followed by Neem extract (67.34%), Bordeaux mixture (59.19%) and Trichoderma harzianum T2l (57.67%).

    EPIDEMIOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF GASTROINTESTINAL PARASITES OF LIVESTOCK POPULATION AT MIRZAPUR UPAZILA IN TANGAIL BANGLADESH

    The objective of this study was to investigate the nutritional statu, of livestock and correlate it with the prevalence of gastroirucstinal parasites (GP) at Mirzapurupnzila in Tangail district. A total 150 questionnaires were prepared to assess the nutritional status of livestock in this study. Total 170 beef caulc. 63 dairy cow. II Goal/sheep and 23 chicken history and fecal samples were collected and evaluated, About 160'0 animals were reared in traditional rearing system and 24,}. animals were reared in intensive rearing system. Among the population 12% caule, 10% dairy cow. 8% goat/sheep and 6% chicken where found diseased condition. Only 18% cattle. 22% dairy cow. 14% goat/sheep & 10% chicken were vaccinated. 50% cattle. 50% dairy cow. 14% goat/sheep were de-wormed routinely. Dairy cow was supplied the highest amount of green grass (9.7 kg/day), Only 76% fanners followed the method of processing nee straw to feed their animals. Overall prevalence of GP infestation was 76%. Prevalence of Paramphistomum spp. infestation was found to be the highest (24%) followed by Fasciola spp, 16%. Trichostrongylus spp. 4~o. Eimeria spp. I 4%. Isospora spp. R%. Trichuris spp. 4·'0. Strongyloides spp, 6° o. The findings of this study provide an epidemiological forecast showing the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in cattle. which can be helpful for the clinician in the diagnosis of such infections. The study revealed that nutritional status. health conditions and gastrointestinal parasites result variations in the productivity of animals.

    EVALUATION OF SOME WHEAT VARIETIES AGAINST LEAF BLIGHT (Bipolaris sorokinianai

    A net house experiment was carried out in the field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh to evaluate ten wheat varieties against leaf blight (Bipolaris sorokiniana). The wheat seeds of varieties Sonalika, Kanchan, Barkat, Shatabdi, Aghrani, Pavon-76, Akbar, Gourab, Sourav and Protiva were collected from Banngladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARl), Gazipur. At ear initiation stage, flowering stage, milking stage and hard dough stage minimum disease severity was recorded in the variety Shatabdi and maximum in the variety Sonalika. The highest number of grains/ear (36.95) and number of healthy grains/ear (36.43) were recorded in the variety Shatabdi The highest 1000-seed weight (43.1Og) were recorded in the variety Gourab and lowest in the variety Protiva. The highest grain yield/pot (5.97g) was recorded in the variety Gourab and lowest yield/pot (4.40g) in the variety Pavon-76. The highest straw yield /pot (14.13g) was recorded in the variety Barkat and lowest (9.IOg) in the variety Shatabdi.

    OPTIMUM FLYASH TO INCREASE THE STRENGTH OF SUBGRADE

    Stabilization of problematic soils with fly ash not only improves engineering properties of soil but also provides a solution to challenges of fly ash disposal. Approximately 52,000 tons of fly ash produced annually at Boropukuria coal-based power plant in Bangladesh require a huge disposal area and create environmental problems. This paper reports the results of laboratory investigation carried out on expansive soil collected from Rajendrapur area stabilized with fly ash in varying percentages. Here, 4% cement is used as an activator. The effect of cement with varying fly ash contents are correlated with soaked California bearing ratio (CBR) value, swelling index and Atterberg limits of stabilized soil. The study finds that soaked CBR value of the soil improves from 1.73% to 26.07% after adding 6% of fly ash for 14 days of curing. With increasing of more fly ash content, strength decreases. So optimum value of fly ash content is 6% for which highest strength is obtained. Moreover, swelling index of the collected soil with 4-days soaking condition is found to be decreased by 47% when 6% fly ash is added. The outcome of this study will guide road engineers of Bangladesh to use fly ash as a stabilizing agent to improve the properties of subgrade

    POTENTIALITY OF SEED TREATMENT WITH SOME PLANT EXTRACT TO CONTROL BIPOLARIS LEAF BLIGHT (Bipolaris sorokiniana) AND INCREASING YIELD OF WHEAT

    A study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of plant extracts to control Bipolaris leaf blight (Bipolaris sorokiniana) and increasing grain yield of wheat. Water extracts of neem (Azadirachta indica). 'allamanda'(Allamallda cathartica), 'mehedi'(Lawsonia alba) leaves, 'bishkatali' (Polygonum hydropiper) shoot, 'garlic'(Allium sativum) clove, onion (Allium cepa) bulb, black cumin (Nigella sativa) seed, and ginger (Zingiber officinalis) rhizome were prepared at a concentration of I :2. Wheat seeds were treated with individual plant extracts. Seeds were also treated with Vitavax-200 for comparison. It was found that all the plant extracts except mehedi increased seed germination on blotter. A remarkable reduction in incidence of seed borne Bipolaris sorokiniana was achieved with the botanicals. The disease severity was the lowest under Vitavax-200, followed by bishkatali and garlic extract. The highest disease severity was recorded under control. The increasd grain yield over control was achieved with extracts of onion, garlic, black cumin, ginger, bishkatali and neem. The efficacy of plant extracts to decrease disease severity and to increase zrain vield was more or less similar to that of Vitavax -200.

    Prevalence and risk factors associated with clinical cases of pet animals in Dhaka city, Bangladesh

    This study aimed to determine the prevalence of most common clinical cases of dog, cat and rabbit reported at MM Hossain’s Pet Clinic, Dhaka, Bangladesh. One thousand and two hundred (n=1200) clinical cases were recorded during the period from March 2020 to July 2022. Among them, dog, cat, and rabbit covered 21%, 65.5% and 12.5% cases, respectively. Parasitic disease was the highest prevalent case (25%) in dogs followed by gastritis (11.51%), wound (10.71%), dermatitis (7.54%), conjunctivitis (6.75%), and kennel cough (5.16%) (p<0.001). Likewise, parasitic disease followed by wound, viral disease, and diarrhea were the more prevalent clinical cases in cats (23.31%, 18.05%, 6.77%, and 5.64%, respectively) (p<0.001). In case of rabbit, traumatic injuries and fracture was the highest reported case (16.67%) followed by parasitic infestation, diarrhea, and dermatitis (13.33%, 13.33%, and 12.00%, respectively) (p<0.001). Clinical cases were more prevalent in male dogs than female dogs (56.75% vs 43.25%) (p<0.05), and dogs more than 6 months of age had more reported clinical cases compared to 1-6 months of aged dogs (65.08% vs 34.92%) (p<0.05). Local breed of cats showed higher prevalence of clinical cases than that of cross breed (66.54% vs 33.46%), male cats had higher prevalence compared to female cats (59.40% vs 40.60%), and cats at the age of 1-6 months represented higher prevalence than those more than 6 months of age (62.16% vs 37.84%) (p<0.05). Male rabbits represented as higher reported clinical cases than female rabbits (72.67% vs 27.33%) (p<0.05). Overall, Parasitic infection/infestation was the prominent reported clinical cases in pet dogs, cats, and rabbits. Proper prevention and therapeutic management should be carrying out to reduce the prevalence of parasitic diseases of pets.

    PROBLEM CONFRONTATION IN MUSHROOM CULTIVATION OF THE CULTIVATORS

    The purpose of the study was to determine the problems confrontation of the cultivators in mushroom cultivation and to explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of the cultivators and their problem confrontation in mushroom cultivation. Cultivators 16 problems in mushroom cultivation were considered for the study. The study was conducted in Savar upazila under Dhaka district. Data were collected from randomly selected 100 cultivators by using an interview schedule. Scale score was used to determine cultivators problem in mushroom cultivation while a Problem confrontation Index (PCI) was used to make comparison among the 16 selected problems. Pearson's product Moment Correlation was used for statistical test. Majority (65 %) of the cultivators were found confronted medium problem, while 24 percent of the cultivators confronted low problem and II percent confronted high problem in mushroom cultivation. Among the selected characteristics of the cultivators education, land possession, mushroom cultivation area, annul family income, organizational participation, cosmopoliteness, extension contact, training exposure in mushroom cultivation and mushroom cultivation knowledge showed significant negative relationship with their problem confrontation and other two variables namely family size and experiences in mushroom cultivation had no significant relationship with problem confrontation in mushroom cultivation. On the basis of Problem Confrontation Index (PCI) boundness of the cultivators to supply commodities to middle man in low price ranked first followed by high price of spawn, complexity to get credit for mushroom cultivation, low demand in the local market, high rate of interest for credit. Lack of knowledge on proper doges of pesticide for pest control of mushroom ranked last.

    PRODUCTION STRATEGY AND ITS EFFECT ON SPOTTED DEER AT NATIONAL ZOO IN BANGLADESH

    The production and reproduction profile, feeds and feeding and herd management of spotted deer studied in captive condition at Bangladesh National Zoo in this experiment. For these purposes, fifteen (15) deer’s from each group i.e. adult male (Stag or buck), adult female (Doe), juvenile and infant were used during January 15 to December 15 th 2018 for a period of eleven months. Available feeds that were supplied to the spotted deer such as maize fodder, Jambu grass and Gourd Spinach (Kolmi grass), cabbages, cucumber, gourd, pumpkin, grain, wheat bran and soybean meal. Amount of CP and metabolic energy was 13.63% and 14.38 MJ ME per day respectively. From the study it was observed that average males and females’ birth weights were 2.97 and 2.73 kg, adult males and females weights 78.08 and 60.97 kg, males and females weaning weights were 19.05 and 18.49 kg respectively. It was also observed that average weaning age was 5.19 months, length of estrous was 17. 40 days, age at first fawning was 14.48 months and gestation lengths were 232.69 days respectively. It is concluded that recommended rations need to be fed with proper management systems to keep balanced nutritive conditions along with productive and reproductive well-being of the spotted deer at Bangladesh National Zoo.

    SIMULATION OF A MODEL FOR DIAGNOSIS AND PRESCRIPTION FOR CUCUMBER MOSAIC DISEASE

    The Experiments were carried out during the period of 2009 to 2013 on the epidemiological status an :--,__ -=,",./ .., prescriptions used for the management of cucumber mosaic disease with a view to simulate a diagnosis and prescription model. The survey area covered five upazillas viz. Mymensingh sadar, Kushtia sadar, Kumarkhali, Chandina and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar under four districts viz, Mymensingh, Kushtia, Comilla and Dhaka where altogether 250 farmers field were considered for observation. The highest disease incidence of mosaic of cucumber (37, I%) was recorded at Kumarkhali, while the lowest were (33.9%) in Boira Keyotkhali, Gemini virus was detected as causal pathogen for cucumber mosaic disease. The model prescriptions issued by Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic (PDDC) found effective in the farmer's field against the Cucumber Mosaic disease in selected locations were subjected to re-evaluation under different experimentations at Plant Pathological field laboratory at BAU farm. Economically affordable management practices were re-tested in five locations of Bangladesh. Based on the re-investigation results, the model prescriptions were finally selected for the vegetable growers of the country. Model diagnosis and prescription have been proposed. These were Surni-Alpha @ I mlfl sprayed 4 times at 15 days intervals starting from first sign of the disease at 60 days after sowing for cucumber mosaic disease. The management practices were reduced of disease incidence (73.5%), disease severity (73.8%), yield increased (74.4%) over control and benefit cost ratio (BCR) was 3.40, respectively.

    STATUS OF INDISCRIMINATE USES OF ANTIBIOTICS IN LIVESTOCK AT NARAYANGANJ SADAR, NARAYANGANJ

    Antibiotic overuse, the prevalence of diseases, and the emergence of medication resistance are the main reasons why rash antibiotic use has attracted significant attention worldwide. By assessing the prescribers' patterns of prescribing antibiotics for patients, this cross-sectional survey-based study aims to represent a true picture of antibiotic use in Narayanganj Sadar, Narayanganj. It was conducted by making specific interviews with 60 farmers using a self-designed standard questionnaire. As a result of this study, we know that 38.3% of animals received antibiotic prescriptions, and that young animals (those age under 2 years old) received these prescriptions more frequently (53.8%). According to this study, the majority of antibiotics were used to treat microbial infections about 18 out of 23 animals (78.3%). Contrary to goat species, cattle species utilized antibiotics at a rate that is 6.69% greater. All prescriptions are for ceftriaxone (22%), marbofloxacin (18%), ceftiofur (4%), and ciprofloxacin (4%), in addition to amoxicillin (26%) and penicillin (26%). The13% of farmers had no idea how an antibiotic worked, how long it had lasted, or how to use it. About 69.5% of animals received prescriptions from non-registered veterinarians. It was obvious that farmers were not sufficiently aware of the usage of antibiotics, lacked adequate education and did not practice regarding drug usage policies in all situations. The spread of bacterial resistance to antibiotics and other health issues are caused by this illogical use. Therefore, community base awareness regarding the discriminate and indiscriminate use of antibiotics in livestock production.

    STUDIES ON SOME PHYSIOL(x;ICAL ASPECTS OF Phomopsis vexans CAUSING PHOMOPSIS BLIGHT AND FRUIT ROT OF EGGPLANT

    The effect of temperature. light, culture media and pH on the mycelial growth and sporulation behaviours of Phomopsis vexans, causal organism of Phomopsis blight and fruit rot of eggplant were studied in the laboratory. The pathogen grew best at 25°C, under 12112h cycle light and pH 5.5 levels of culture media. Number of spores per millilitre was also maximum at 25°C temperature, 12112h cycle light and at pH 5.5. Eggplant Fruit Extract Agar media gave the maximum growth and sporulation of P. vexans. Two types of conidia, u (alpha) and [l (beta) were detected in P. vexons. Five groups of isolates showed variation in growth and sporulation under different levels of temperature, light, culture media and pH. Alpha and beta conidia varied in size for live isolates groups. Existence of variation in isolates of P. vexans revealed the existence of the variability of P. vexons occurs in Bangladesh.
