Item DETERMINATION OF THE POTENTIALITY OF DIFFERENT SESAME (Sesamum indicum L.)GENOTYPES(Bangladesh Journal of Agriculture, 2024-07) Islam, M. N.; Sultana, S.; Harun-Ur-Rashid, M.; Rahim, M. A.A field experiment was carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka during the Kharif season of 2022 to examine the genetic variability, correlation, and path analysis based on 12 characters of 43 sesame genotypes. Analysis of variance exhibited significant differences among the genotypes for most of the characters except the number of capsules per plant. The phenotypic variance and phenotype coefficient of variation were relatively higher than the respective genotypic variance and genotypic coefficient of variation for all the characters. High broad sense heritability together with high genetic advance in percent of mean was observed for number of secondary branches per plant (90.1%), 1000-seed weight (99.3%), and seed yield per plant (97.9%) while moderate heritability for days to 50% flowering (59.8%). The correlation coefficient analysis revealed that seed yield per plant had a significant positive correlation with plant height, days to 50% flowering, days to 80% maturity, number of primary branches per plant, number of capsules per plant, number of seeds per capsule, height of the first capsule, and 1000-seed weight. It appears from path coefficient analysis that plant height (0.856), days to 80% maturity (0.227), number of primary branches per plant (0.467), number of secondary branches per plant (0.441), capsule length (0.258), and number of seeds per capsule (0.213) had a positive direct effect on the yield per plant whereas, internode length (-0.799) followed by number of capsules per plant (-0.370), and days to 50% flowering (-0.198) had a negative direct effect. Based on mean performance, heritability, and interrelationship, the genotypes G6, G12, and G36 for seed yield per plant, and the genotypes G26, G27, and G37 for early maturity could be selected for further varietal improvement of sesame.Item Effect of automobile exhausts on nutritional status of soil and plant(Bangladesh J. N.; Das, M.Item EFFECT OF VERMICOMPOST AND NPK FERTILIZERS ON THE POTASSIUM AND SULPHUR CONTENTS IN WHEAT AND THE POST HARVEST SOIL(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2008-01) Bhuiyan, M. S.A field experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm, Dhaka 1207 during the Rabi season of2004-2005 to study the effect ofvermicompost and NPK on potassium and sulphur content of wheat and in the post harvest soil. The treatments consisted of 4 levels of vermicomposts viz. V. (0 t ha"), VI (I t ha"), V, (2 t ha·I),V3 (3 t ha"), and 4 levels of chemical fertilizers viz. F,,= (0-0-0 kg NPK ha'), F1= low (40-30-20 kg NPK ha'), F, = medium (80-60-40 kg NPK ha'), F3= high (120-80-60 kg NPK ha") as N-P,O,K20 with 16 treatments combinations. The results demonstrated that with increasing the doses of vermicomposts and chemical fertilizers, K and S content were increased in wheat straw at three stages and in the post harvest soil significantly. The highest doses of verrnicompost and chemical fertilizers enhanced potssium and sulphur content at the maximum tillering stage.Item EXPLICATING THE SALINITY TOLERANCE OF COWPEA (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) GENOTYPES AT SEED(Bangladesh Journal of Agriculture, 2024-07-18) Rahim, M. A.; Hossain, A.; Ara, A. M; Islam, M. N.; Huda, K. M. K.Cowpea is an important food and fodder legume in the arid and semi-arid tropics of the world. Soil salinity adversely affects seed germination, which ultimately reduces crop production. The present study was carried out to screen the cowpea germplasm and identify the salinity tolerant genotypes at the germination stage. Initially, an experiment with five salinity levels (0, 50, 100, 200, and 250 mM of NaCl) was conducted, and the results showed that 200 mM of NaCl concentration could be a sensible salinity stress to assess the salinity tolerance of cowpea genotypes. A total of 29 cowpea genotypes were evaluated under a 200 mM NaCl concentration. Four salinity tolerance indices such as absolute decrease (AD), inhibition index (II), relative salt tolerance (RST), and salt tolerance index (STI) were calculated from germination percentage without stress (GC) and germination with 200 mM NaCl (GS). All the indices showed significant variation in responses to salinity stress among the cowpea genotypes. The results revealed that salinity stress significantly reduced the germinating percentage in cowpea. Total seven cowpea genotypes (G4, G9, G12, G15, G26, G27, and G32) were found to be salinity tolerant lines at the germination stage. The seven genotypes were clustered in the same group which had the higher RST (G4: 0.58, G9: 0.80, G12: 0.50, G15: 0.60, G26: 0.50, G27: 0.60, and G32: 0.80) and STI (G4: 0.58, G9: 0.80, G12: 0.50, G15: 0.60, G26: 0.50, G27: 0.60, and G32: 0.79) under salinity stress. However, this is a preliminary screening against salinity at the germination stage, and further research is required at the seedling vegetative and reproductive stages for validation.Item GENETIC CHARACTERIZATION OF SESAME VARIETIES THROUGH RAPD FINGERPRINTING TECHNIQUE IN BANGLADESH(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2013-01) Islam, M. N.; Molla, M. R.; Rahman, L.DNA fingerprinting helps to document plant genetic resources of a particular species through banding patterns and plays an important role in genetic conservation and breeding program. Four varieties of sesame had been fingerprinted by three decamers of randomely amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. A total of 21 PCR amplification products were found by using 3 decamer primers (OPA-09, OPC-OS and OPL-07) among which 14 bands were polymorphic. The size of the amplification products ranged from 347bp to 1224bp for OPA-09, 317hp to IS92bp for OPC-OS and 423bp to 1024bp for OPL- 07 primer. Within the individuals of a single variety no genetic variation was observed. UPGMA dendogram based on Nei's (1972) genetic distance indicated segregation of 4 varieties of sesame into two main clusters: T 6 with BARI Til-2 grouped in cluster I and BARI Til-3 with BINA Til I in cluster 2. Molecular characterization of the varieties will provide support for broadening the genetic basis of selective breeding programs.Item PERFORMANCE STUDY OF CROSSBRED DUCK (BEIJING X DESI WHITE DUCK) IN COMPARISON WITH THEIR PARENTS(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2008-07) Khatun, H.; Islam, M. N.; Hossain, M. M.; Faruque, S.The experiment was undertaken to compare the performance of crossbred duck (Beijing x desi white) F, with that of their parents (native Desi white (DW) and Beijing duck). Live weight of Beijing showed highly significant difference at 8 weeks of age compared to white duck but no statistical difference observed at 10 and 12 weeks of age. Dressing yield and breast muscle percent differed significantly at 8 and 12 weeks of age among the genotypes except at 10 week. Abdominal fat percent of F, (0.73) was significantly lower than Beijing (0.88) ducks. The maturity age was 161±9.75, 182± I0.01 and I 54±9.58 days for DW, Beijing and F, ducks, respectively. The average body weight (g) at maturity of Desi white, Beijing and white (F,) ducks were observed to be 1479±25.34, 2530.65±150.30 and 2250.24±35.18g, respectively. The average values for egg weight (g) of DW and F, duck at 40 weeks of age were 55.14 ± 4.50,64.15 ± 3.80, 60.35 ± 6.24, respectively and at 60 weeks of age were 56.27 ± 5.30, 68.00 ± 5.70, 60.34 ± 6.24, respectively. Crossbred ducks produced higher egg than desi and beijing ducks. The average shape index values obtained in DW. beijing and crossbred duck (Beijing x Desi white) were 76.37±. 86 76.20 ± I. 10 and 75.33± 1.17, respectively. The average Breaking Strength values obtained in DW, beijing and crossbred duck were 4.23±. 28, 3.22 ± 0.25 and 2.26 ± ..32, respectively. The average eggshell thickness (mm) values obtained in DW, beijing and crossbred duck were 0.43± I. 7,0.44 ± 4.15 and 0.44±5.17, respectively. The eggshell value was higher in crossbred duck than desi and beijing duck. Haugh unit was 77.49±4.5, 90.21 ± 7.60 and 80.86±6.7 for Desi duck and crossbred duck, respectively. Desi duck is more resistant than other ducks. Mortality rate was found higher in crossbred duck.
