    (Hindawi, 2014-05-22) Islam, M. M.; Faruque, M.R.I.; Islam, M.T.
A band-removal property employing microwave frequencies using complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs) is applied to design a compact UWB antenna wishing for the rejection of some frequency band, which is meanwhile exercised by the existing wireless applications. The reported antenna comprises optimization of a circular radiating patch, in which slotted complementary SRRs are implanted. It is printed on low dielectric FR4 substrate material fed by a partial ground plane and a microstrip line. Validated results exhibit that the reported antenna shows a wide bandwidth covering from 3.45 to more than 12 GHz, with a compact dimension of 22 × 26 mm2, and VSWR < 2, observing band elimination of 5.5 GHz WLAN band. A compact disc-shaped printed antenna using parasitic element on ground plane for super wideband applications
    (ACES, 2016-08) Islam, M. M.; Faruque, M.R.I.; Islam, M.T.
A microstrip line-fed monopole antenna is proposed and investigated using a structure of parasitic element for super-wideband applications. The parasitic element consists of 4 rectangular embedded slots on the ground plane. This parasitic element on the ground plane leads the UWB frequency band into the SWB frequency band. This proposed monopole antenna is fed by a microstrip line and is printed on low dielectric FR4 material of 1.6 mm thickness. All the simulations are performed using commercially available, finite element method (FEM) based Ansoft high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) software and CST Microwave Studio. Measured results exhibit that the proposed disc-shaped antenna shows a wide bandwidth which covers from 2.90 GHz to more than 20 GHz, with a compact dimension of 25 mm × 33 mm for VSWR <2, observing an extended ultra-wideband frequency. A good combination is noticed between simulation and measurement. This proposed SWB antenna delivers impedance bandwidth covering the L, C, X, Ku bands and points out sharply surface current flow and nearly omnidirectional radiation patterns, which is appropriate for UWB or SWB applications.

    (IOS Press, 2016) Islam, M. M.; Islam, M. T.; Faruque, M. R. I.; Misran, N.; Samsuzzaman, M.; Hossain, M. I.; Alam, T.
In this paper, a disc-shaped monopole antenna has been investigated for super-wideband applications with a structure of parasitic element. The proposed SWB antenna consists of disc-shaped patch and a partial ground plane with a structure of parasitic element. The parasitic element consists of 4 rectangular embedded slots on the ground plane. This parasitic element on the ground plane leads the UWB frequency band into the SWB frequency band. This proposed SWB antenna is fed by a microstrip line and is printed on low dielectric FR4 material of 1.6 mm thickness. All the simulations are performed using commercially available, finite element method (FEM) based Ansoft high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) software and CST Microwave Studio. Measured results exhibit that the proposed disc-shaped antenna shows a wide bandwidth which covers from 2.90 GHz to more than 20 GHz, with a compact dimension of 25 mm × 33 mm for VSWR < 2, observing a SWB frequency. A good combination is noticed between simulation and measurement. The simple construction, sharply, surface current flow, much impedance bandwidth, nearly omnidirectional radiation patterns, stable peak gain (3.20-6.22 dBi) and a considerable bandwidth dimension ratio (≥ 2062. 22) are a good deal sounder than the existing super wideband antennas which make it appropriate for many wireless communication systems such as L, C, X, UWB, Ku, and SWB bands. (Wiley, 2015-03-27) Islam, M. M.; Islam, M. T.; Samsuzzaman, M.; Faruque, M.R.I.
In this article, a negative index metamaterial antenna ispresented for ultrawideband (UWB) microwave imaging applications.Four left-handed (LH) metamaterial (MTM unit cells are located alongone axis of the antenna as the radiating element. Each left-handed meta-material unit cell assembles a modified split-ring resonator with acapacitance-loaded strip to obtain a design architecture that at a timeshows both negative permittivity and negative permeability, whichassures the stable negative refractive index to raise the antenna per-formance for microwave imaging. The antenna structure of dimension16 3 21 3 1.6 mm3is printed on low dielectric FR4 material with aslotted ground plane and a microstrip feed. Measured reflection coeffi-cient illustrates that this antenna attains 114.5% bandwidth covering thefrequency band of 3.4–12.5 GHz for a voltage standing wave ratio lessthan 2 with a maximum gain 5.16 dBi at 10.15 GHz. There is a stable harmony between simulation and measured results and improved nearlyomnidirectional radiation characteristics within the operational fre-quency band. The stable surface current distribution, negative refractiveindex characteristic, considerable gain, and radiation property havemade this proposed negative index metamaterial antenna distinguishablefor UWB microwave imaging applications. A new metasurface based on meta‐atom cluster for terahertz applications
    (Wiley, 2017-05-27) Islam, M. M.; Faruque, M. R. I.; Islam, M. T.
In the manuscript, a new metasurface is presented for terahertz applications based on meta‐atom cluster. The metasurface having magnetic and electric resonances shows left‐handed metamaterial characteristics in the terahertz frequency. The meta atom cluster consists of split‐ring resonators based on conducting wire strip (a single loop) printed on RT5880LZ substrate material. The permeability and the permittivity are picked out from the complex scattering parameters. The calculation of the unloaded Q‐factor is executed for the meta‐atom cluster based metasurface in the terahertz frequency. The test of the metasurface has been performed using different dielectric samples loaded. Effective change has been realized in the transmission. This metasurface is novel in case of terahertz band due to left‐handed characteristics. This metasurface is appropriate for high‐performance filters and sensors due to high Q‐factors. (IOS Press, 2015) Samsuzzaman, M.; Islam, M. T.; Nahar, M. K.; Mandeep, J.S.; Mansor, F.; Islam, M. M.
A circular polarized highly directional S band patch antenna for small satellite applications has been proposed in this invention. The proposed antenna comprises of a square ground plane and two circular radiating patches with annular circular slot fed by a coaxial probe. The circular slot in the radiating patch is responsible for creating resonance at the S band. The prototype is can be easily integrated with a small satellite due to the simplicity of the design. The modification of the circular shape patch by cutting circular shape slots help to excite the resonance at the desired frequency. The simulation and the experimental results have a good agreement. The proposed antenna has achieved an impedance bandwidth of 55 MHz (2.380 GHz-2.435 GHz) and axial ratio (AR) < 3 dB is about 35 MHz (2.410 MHz-2.445 MHz) in the operating band. The prototype has achieved a gain of 8.13 dBi at centre frequency of 2.42 GHz. The directional radiation pattern, circular polarization (CP), and high gain characteristics make the proposed antenna suitable for small satellite applications. EFFECT OF POSTHARVEST TREATMENTS ON SHELF LIFE EXTENSION OF GUAVA
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2014-01) Islam, K. N.; Robbani, M.; Ali, M.; Bose, S. K.; Islam, M. M.
The experiment was conducted to develop an appropriate storage method and shelf life of two guava varieties, namely Swarupkathi and Kazi Piara under different postharvest treatments. Six postharvest treatments viz., control, hot water, neem extract, brown wrapping paper, perforated white polythene bag and non-perforated white polythene bag were assigned to the guava fruits. The two factors experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. Among the physico-chemical parameters such as reducing and non-reducing sugar contents increased significantly, whereas titratable acidity and vitamin C contents decreased during storage in all treated and untreated fruits. Between two varieties, the shelf life of Kazi Piara (9.89 days) was higher than that of Swarupkathi (7.94 days). The postharvest treatments showed highly significant variation in the shelf life of guava. The shelf life extended up to 13.00 days by using non-perforated white polythene bag. The fruits stored in nonperforated white polythene bag having longer shelf life resulted slow change in its chemical components. The shelf life of variety Kazi Piara could be extended up to 13.00 days by using non-perforated white polythene bag.

EFFECT OF SOWING METHODS AND TIME ON COTTON YIELD IN SALINE AREA OF BANGLADESH
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-07) Akhteruzzaman, M.; Miah, M. A. E.; Islam, M. M.
The experiment was conducted in a fanner's field at Tala Upzilla of Shatkhera district during the season of 2009·201 0 to evaluate cotton yield in saline soil under two sowing methods and time. The experiment was arranged in Factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four treatments such as, Direct Seed Sowing in December (DSSD); Polybag Seed Sowing in December (PSSD); Direct Seed Sowing in February (DSSF); Poly bag Seed Sowing in February (PSSF) with three replications. Significant variation among the treatments were observed for plant shoot elongation rate, no. of vegetative branches per plant, single boll weight, days to first flowering and days to first boll splitting. Significant differences among the treatments were not seen for no. of primary fruiting branches per plant, no. of effective boll per plant and for seed cotton yield. Better plant establishment was exhibited in PSSD and PSSF where poly bag-seedlings were transplanted. DSSF and PSSF showed higher seed cotton yield (2.17 - 2.25 tlha) with earliness due to higher rate of initial plant shoot development up to 71 days after sowing (DAS) and with lowest values of vegetative branches per plant, days to first flowering and days to first boll splitting. Here the time of sowing was mainly responsible to make the result significant.

Feasibility Of Producing Lightweight Concrete Using Indigenous Materials Without Autoclaving
    (R&D Wing, MIST, 2011-02) Shamsuddoha, M.; Islam, M. M.; M. A., Noor
This research shows the feasibility and sequential approach for producing lightweight concrete without autoclaving using indigenous ingredients and appropriate technology of Bangladesh. Ingredients were mixed chronologically using trial-and-error method to reduce unit weight. Specific volume principle was utilized to observe the effect of inclusion of cement, water, sand, lime and aluminium in the mixture to achieve the goal. Molds were used to accommodate volumetric expansion of mixture. Both 50 mm and 150 mm cubic specimens were prepared for tests. Density and compressive strength were determined for specimens. Absorption capacity and thermal conductivity were also determined to get the product performance. From the results, it was seen that density and compressive decreased with increased water-cement ratio. Volumetric expansion was high for higher volume surface ratio. Finally, lightweight concrete with density, compressive strength and thermal conductivity within range of 700-1000 kg/m3, 0.5-2.0 MPa and 0.2-0.5 W/m-k respectively was produced.

    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2009-07) Yahiya, A. S. M.; Bhuiyan, M. S. R.; Islam, M. M.; Al-Mamun, M.; Rahman, M. M.
Forty two white jute genotypes were analyzed through principal component analysis. principal coordinate analysis, canonical variate analysis and non-hierarchical clustering to identify suitable parents having distant relationship for hybridization programme. The genotypes were grouped into six different clusters. Cluster V had the maximum of eleven genotypes while cluster II had the minimum of three genotypes. The highest inter-genotypic distance was found between G36 and G39 and the lowest distance between G4 and G23.The highest inter-cluster distance was observed between clusters I and II, and the lowest inter-cluster distance was observed between clusters I and VI. The highest intra-cluster distance was found in cluster I and the lowest in cluster II. Cluster with large distances were considered more diverged than those with small distances. Genotypes of cluster II had the highest mean values for base diameter, middle diameter, top diameter, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight and that of cluster V had the highest mean values for technical height. leaf angle, leaf length and petiole length. Yield and yield contributing characters such as technical height, base diameter. dry fibre weight and dry stick weight contributed more towards genetic divergence considering diversity pattern. Based on inter cluster distances and desirable characters the genotypes G36 and G33 from cluster I: G28 and G35 from cluster II: G7. G39 and G41 from cluster IV; G3 from cluster VI have been selected for hybridization programme.

GENETIC VARIABILITY, CHARACTER ASSOCIATION AND PATH ANALYSIS OF WHITE JUTE (Corchorus capsularis L.)
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Al-Mamun, M.; Hossain, M. S.; Khatun, R.; Yahiya, A. S. M.; Islam, M. M.
ute (Corchorus capsularis L.) is an important fibre crop of manifold utility. Its fibre yield and quality is dependent on component characters which are quantitatively inherited and considerably influenced by environment. In crop plants, most economical characters are controlled by many genes. Physiological and linkage relationship have been frequently observed in genes governing various quantitative characters (Dhillon and Gupta, 1975). Hence, knowledge on the phenotypic and genotypic correlations between important characters is considered useful in planning an efficient breeding programme. Besides, correlations between important and unimportant characters may reveal that some of the latter are useful as indication of one or more of the important characters (Johnson et al., 1955 a). Thus, advancement through a breeding programme depends upon the extent of genetic variability in the population and the extent to which the desirable traits are heritable. In this context, correlation and path-coefficient analysis assume special importance as they not only measure mutual association but also estimate the direct and indirect contributions of perspective traits. This investigation was, therefore, undertaken to measure the genetic variability, nature of association among different plant traits and the potential applicability of path analysis techniques in breeding white jute.

GENETIC VARIABILITY, CORRELATION AND PATH ANALYSIS IN TOSSA JUTE (Corchorus olitorius L.) GERMPLASM
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2008-07) Islam, M. M.; Ali, N. M.; Bhuiyan, M.. S. R.; Rahman, M. M.; Yahiya, A. S. M.
Genetic variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis for yield and yield attributing traits in 41 indigenous genotypes and three commercially cultivated varieties of tossa jute were studied at the Central .lute Agricultural Experiment Station, Manikganj of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (B.1RI) during April to September 2007. Considering genetic parameters, high genotypic coefficient of variation and high heritability coupled with high genetic advance over mean were recorded for the characters- number of nodes per plant, green weight with leaves per plant, green weight without leaves per plant, stick weight per plant and fibre weight per plant suggesting better opportunity for selecting high valued genotypes based on these characters. Fibre yield per plant was significantly and positively correlated with green weight without leaves per plant and stick weight per plant at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Path coefficient analysis indicated maximum direct contribution of stick weight per plant towards fibre yield followed by internode length, green weight without leaves per plant, plant height and green weight with leaves per plant.
