    A GIS-BASED ANALYSIS ON “EMERGENCY DISASTER RESPONSE” -A CASE STUDY ON CHITTAGONG CITY CORPORATION

    Chittagong city is located on the south-eastern coast of Bangladesh and called the “commercial” capital of the country. It is vulnerable to natural disasters such as earthquake, flood etc. And for the compact urban populations, geographical location, and infrastructure, it creates an even higher risk. People and their property are often affected. If there is an emergency response plan, it will help people to take shelter in a secure place such as hospitals. Geographic information system (GIS) is used to identify probable areas of high, moderate and low risk in case of an earthquake occurs. High risk areas involve regions that are vulnerable to slope failure, close to the locations of transformers. It is mapped out the regions within Chittagong that are at high risk of slope failure, electrical surges and measure the best possible (least cost) routes for the city dwellers to reach the assumed safe destinations such as hospitals. Thus, the outcome of the research can be used for further research and analysis to make an android application of emergency disaster response.

    ASSESSMENT OF NUTRIENT STATUS OF THE FOREST SOILS AS COMPARED TO CULTIVATED SOILS OF THE SUNDERBANS OF BANGLADESH

    An investigation was carried out to determine the nutrient status of soils of the Sundarbans of Koyra Upazila under Khulna district. Forest soils of the Sundarbans receive seawater at a regular interval. but the cultivated land inside the embankment never receives seawater. To investigate the impact of seawater on nutrient status of the forest soils as compared to cultivated soils inside the embankment, soil samples from the above two areas were collected at two different depths, surface (0-15 ern) and sub- surface (15-30 cm). The chemical analyses included soil p+I, Ee, organic matter, N. P. S. K. Ca. Mg. Na, B. Zn, Cu. Fe and Mn content in soils. The soils of the mangrove forest of Koyra Upazila were saline. but the cultivated soils adjacent to the Sundarbans (inside the embankment) were acidic to saline. EC values were higher in mangrove forest soils than cultivated land and both the pH and EC were higher in surface soils. The organic matter. N, P and S contents were higher in surface soils than that of sub-surface soils. The status of Ca, Mg and K were higher in sub-surface soils than that of surface soils. The levels of N, Ca, Mg. Na, B, Cu and Mn were higher in forest soils than that of cultivated soils. But the concentrations of Fe, P, Sand Zn were higher in cultivated soils than that afforest soils. The level of S in cultivated land was 401.4 mg kg". The low pH (5.3 to 7.3) and higher amount of S04-S indicated that the soils of cultivated land were acid-sulphate. The concentrations of micronutrients were comparatively higher in surface soils than that of sub-surface soils.

    EFFICACY OF HERBICIDES PANIDA 33 EC (PENDIMETHALIN) AND NEON 70 WG (METRIBUZIN) IN POTATO FIELDS

    A field experiment was conducted at On-farm research station, Rangpur, BAR I during rabi season of 2005-06 and 2006-07 to find out the optimum rate of herbicides and time of application against weeds in potato fields. Herbicides Panida 33 EC (pendimethalin) and Neon 70 WG (metribuzin) were evaluated through post planting pre-emergence and post emergence (9 days after planting) spraying with different rates on weed management in potato fields. Post planting post emergence spraying of Panida 33 ECC and Neon 70 WP controlled all broad leaf weeds. Among the different rates of herbicides Panida 33 EC @ 10 up to 3.0 liter and Neon 70 WG @ 750 up to 1000g ha showed similar results in controlling broad leaf weeds particularly of Chenopodium album (Bathua), Amaranthus viridis (Shaknotey), Alternanthern philoxeroides (Maloncho). Lindernia anagallis (Panigas), Gnaphulium affine (Bonocopy), Om/is europea (Amrul) and Glil/IIS lotoides (Carpet agacha). Yield of potato tubers in the year 2005-06 was significantly increased up to 51 and 49 % over control by spraying Panida 33 EC @ 3.0 liter and Neon 70 WG @ 1000 g ha", respectively at 9 DAP. Similar result was also observed by spraying Panida 33 EC @ 1.0 liter and Neon 70 WG @ 750 g ha'. In the year 2005-06. the highest tuber yield (21.24 t ha") was recorded from weed free plot which was statistically similar with post emergence Panida 33 EC @ I I ha (19.00 t ha") and post emergence neon 70 WG @ 750 g ha (20.16 t ha'). Similar trend was also observed in next year. Post planting post emergence (9 DAP) spraying of Panida 33 EC @ 1.0 I ha and Neon 70 EC @ 750 g ha in potato fields are most effective in controlling broad leaf weeds like Chenopodium album, Amaranthus viridis, Alternanthera philoxeroides. Gnaphalum affine. Oxalis europca and Glinus lotoides.

    ESTIMATE OF HETEROSIS IN BITTER GOURD

    Heterotic performance of biller gourd hybrids was studied in a set of 5 x 5 diallel cross excluding reciprocals. Analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences for all the characters suggesting the presence of genetic variability among the studied materials. The degree of heterosis was higher for days to first male flower opening, days to first female flower opening, nodes to first female flower. days to first harvest, fruit length, seeds per fruit, branches per vine, fruits per plant and while relatively lower for remaining traits. The hybrids 1', x P, 1', x 1', and 1', x 1', performed earlier compared to mid and better parents. Hybrids PI x P" P, x P" 1', x P, manifested the higher heterosis over mid parent and better parent for fruits per plant while 1', x 1'" PI x 1', for fruit weight. The highest significant positive mid parent heterosis for yield per plant was obtained from the cross 1'2 x 1', (1130 I percent) followed by 1', x P, (78.65 percent), P, x P, (59.30 percent) and PI x P, (50.59 percent) while the highest positive better parent heterosis was obtained for yield per plant in P, x 1', (9425 percent) followed by P, x 1', (4920 percent).

    GENETIC VARIABILITY, CHARACTER ASSOCIATION AND PATH ANALYSIS OF YIELD COMPONENTS IN POTATO

    Thirty one genotypes of potato were evaluated in order to find out genetic variability. character association and path analysis of tuber yield and its component characters. All the genotypes showed highly significant variation for all the characters studied. High genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) as well as phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was observed for individual tuber weight/plant (ITW). tuber weight loss percentage at 150 days after harvest due 10 respiration (TWL). tuber weight/plant (TW). tuber number/plant (TN) and plant height at 50. 70 and 90 days after planting (PH50, PH70 and PH90 OAP). Heritability estimates were found high for PH, TW, TN, ITW and TWL. TW was found to be positively and significantly associated at genotypic as well as phenotypic levels with PH (50, 70 and 90 OAP), TN, ITW and TWL and also strong positive significant association among themselves. Path coefficient analysis revealed that PH (50 and 70 OAP), number of stems/plant (NS), ITW and TWL have direct positive influence on TW.

    PARAMETERS OF CONDEMNATION OF ORGANS AND CARCASSES IN SLAUGHTERED CATTLE AND GOATS OF COMMERCIAL ABATTOIR IN BANGLADESH

    This study identified the common causes of condemnation of slaughtered cattle and goat in a commercial abattoir in Bangladesh. A total of 8,604 cattle and 27,699 goats were slaughtered for the period of July 2007 to June 2008. All the procedures of standard abattoir were followed to get hygienic meat. Ante-mortem examination and postmortem inspection was done with due attention. In cattle liver and lungs are first list organs for condemnation and incidence of affection is 78% in liver and 19.3% in lungs. Fascioliasis is the leading cause of liver condemnation in cattle (75.5%). Hydatidosis affection found both in liver and lungs but the incidence rate is higher in lungs. Abscess is also a disease responsible for organ condemnation particularly in liver (1.4%), lungs (6.1%) and kidneys (I. I%). In goats, a total of 7,278 organs were condemned due to several diseases or conditions namely fascioliasis, hydatidosis, cysticercosis, abscess, pnemonia and tumor. Among them 5,55 I cases were liver (76.3%) and 1,296 cases were lungs (17.8%). Fascioliasis is the leading cause of liver condemnation in goat (94.8%) where pneumonia is for lungs condemnation (69.5%) in goat. However hydatidosis cause both liver (4.6%) and lungs (23.2%) damage at the point of condemnation. Liver, lungs and kidneys abscess are responsible for organ condemnation. Cysticercosis (16.3%), gluteal abscess (15.6%) and grass seed poisoning (6.4%) are also the causal factors of condemnation. The results suggested that the highest incidence of organ condemnation is found in liver and lungs caused by fascioliasis and pnemonia in cattle and goats respectively and grass seed poisoning is the single cause for whole carcass condemnation in goat. The results of the present study concluded that liver and lungs are organs of various affections and mandatory to condemn.

    RESPONSE OF TRANSPLANTED AMAN RICE VARIETIES, SEEDLING RATE AND WATER REGIMES

    A pot experiment was carried out in the experimental site of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture. Mymensingh from June to November. 2002 with a view to study the growth and yield performances of two modem varieties of transplant aman rice as affected by number of seedlings hiW' and water regimes. Variety. number of seedlings nnr', water regimes and their interactions exerted significant influence on almost all the crop characters. At all the growth stages. the maximum values of total tillers hill". leaf. stem. root. shoot. and total dry matter hill', leaf area index were found in BINA dhan 4x4 seedlings hill" x intermittent irrigation. whereas the minimum values of those parameters were in BRRI dhan 39x 2 seedlings hill" x 2527 ern continuous stagnant water. The highest total dry matter (88.09 g) and grain yield pot' (31.25 g) were achieved in the treatment combination of BINA dhan 4 with 4 seedlings hiW' and intermittent irrigation.

    VARIABILITY AND INTERRELATIONSHIP OF YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS IN MAIZE

    Genetic variability. con-elation and path coefficient analyses were carried out for grain yield and its component characters in maize. Comparatively higher genotypic coefficient of variability was found for plant height. number of tassel branches and IOOO-kernelweight. Plant height, tassel length and shelling percentage showed high heritability coupled with high genetic gain. Grain yield was significantly and positively associated with days to maturity, number of tassel branches and kernel weight. Path coefficient analysis revealed the highest contribution of car diameter and length to grain yield and these were followed by tassel length and days to silking.

    VARIETAL PERFORMANCE OF TRANSPLANT AMAN RICE AS INFLUENCED BY NUMBER OF SEEDLINGS HILL-] UNDER SUBMERGENCE CONDITION

    The research work was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali during the Aman season (July to December, 2016) for optimizing number of seedlings hil l ' of rice varieties grown under submerged condition. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Three levels of seedling numbers viz. 2 seedlings hin-',4 seedlings hillland 6 seedlings hill-' with three varieties viz, BRRI dhan41 ,BRRI dhan53 and BRRI dhan54 were considered in the study. The number of seedlings hilr' did not significantly influence all the parameters. The highest grain yield (5.54 t ha"), straw yield (5.30 t ha-I), total tillers hil l' , (9.06), effective tillers (8.98) and 1000 grain weight (23.29g)were obtained at 4 seedlings hilr'. The lowest grain yield (5.43 t ha'), 1000 grain weight (23.15g), total tillers (8.36), effective tillers (8.33) and plant height (132.11 em) were obtained from 2 seedlings hil"'. Variety showed significant differences for plant height, total tillers hin-', effective tillers hill", grains panicle", sterile spikelets panicle" and 1000- grain weight. BRRI dhan54 showed with the highest grain yield (5.75 t ha'), straw yield (5.301 ha'), grains panicle' (150m, plant height (151.33cm) and higher harvest index (52.00%). BRRJ dhan41 produced lower grain yield (5.32 t ha-I), grains panicle" (131.5), total tillers (7.50), effective tillers (7.58) and sterile spikelets panicle' ' (40.3 I ). The interaction of variety and number of seedlings hilr'had significant effect on plant height, total tillers hilr', number of grain panicle", number of sterile spikelets panicle" and 1000 grain weight. BRRJ dhan54 with 4 seedlings hill" gave highest yield (6.06t ha'). straw yield (5.45t ha-'),1000 grain weight (23.34g), total tillers (10.50) and effective tillers (10.33).
