    ANALYSIS OF NUTRIENT CONTENTS IN CONVENTIONAL AND NONCONVENTIONAL FEED INGREDIENTS AND ITS EFFECTS ON CARP POLYCULTURE PRODUCTION

    A study on proximate composition of conventional and non-conventional fish feed ingredients was carried out involving two separate experiments. First experiment was conducted from April 2010 to September 2010 at the Protein and Enzyme Research Laboratory, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Rajshahi University, Rajshahi with a view to determine nutrient (protein, lipid and carbohydrate) content of some feed ingredients i.e. Rice bran, wheat bran, mustard oil cake, Azolla, grass (Cynodon dactylon) and leaf of banana (Musa acuminate) among the feed samples, protein, lipid and carbohydrate content significantly varied from 6.18±0.13 (banana leaf) to 30.53±0.40% (oil cake), 3.06±0.09 (banana leaf) to 13.33±0.10% (oil cake) and 32.95±0.29 (oil cake) to 66.12±0.47% (wheat bran), respectively. Second experiment was conducted during the period from April 20 II to September 20 II at Alampur village of SOOarUpazila under Kushtia district, Bangladesh with a view to evaluate the fish production and economics under different conventional and non-conventional feed based carp polyculture systems. There were three replications for each treatment. In this experiment, treatment To(Semi-intensive ponds fed with feeds like rice bran, wheat bran and oi1cake as control) varied more significantly (P<0.05) for the mean values of total yield but in terms of total cost, total return, net benefit, net profit margin and eBR treatment T, (Azolla fed pond) was best. Therefore, the findings indicate that weeds (non-conventional feed items) are moderately nutritive and low cost effective diets for fish production.

    COMPARATIVE STUDY OF HEMATOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL PROFILES OF REPEAT BREEDING ZEBU COWS

    The study was undertaken to know the hematological and biochemical profiles of repeat breeding zebu cows. Blood samples from cows with repeat breeding syndrome were collected for hematological, biochemical and humoral immune response analysis. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) was higher and hemoglobin (Hb) percentage was lower in repeat breeding cows than the normal cyclic cows. The packed cell volume (Pf.V) was lower in repeat breeding cows than in normal cyclic cows. Total erythrocyte count (TEC) is not signiticantly different whereas total leukocyte counts (TLC) significantly higher in repeat breeding cows. The bilirubin concentration was no! significantly higher (P< 0.01) in repeat breeding cows compared to the control groups of cows. The mean serum IgG was lower in repeat breeding cow than control groups of cows.

    COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF LOCALLY AVAILABLE BRICKS & SAND IN EASTERN REGION OF CHITTAGONG

    Bricks & sand are used in various types of construction work such as partition wall, reservoir, road & building. Problems frequently occur due to the use of low-quality bricks & sands. Bricks & sand that do not fulfil the quality standards make structures weak & faulty. Different field and laboratory tests are needed for quality control of these engineering materials. This study covers the experimental investigation sand and brick samples collected from ten different local areas of Chittagong district. These materials were tested through field and laboratory tests to assess their engineering properties in order to compare with standard limiting values. Unit weight, Fineness modulus, Salinity, Water Absorption Capacity, Specific gravity and Chloride tests were conducted for sand. Whereas Field Test, Size & Shape, Salinity, Chloride, Unit Weight, Water Absorption and Crushing Strength tests were performed for Bricks in the laboratory of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology. The properties of brick and sand samples are observed to vary for different sources. However, the test data may provide necessary information to ensure quality of construction works in this region.

    EFFECT OF NITROGEN AND BORON ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO (Lycopersicon esculentum MILL.)

    A field experiment was conducted at the research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during -, November 2006 to March 2007 to study the effects of nitrogen and boron on growth and yield of tomato. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (ReBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 3.96 m2 (2.2 m x 1.8 m). There were 12 treatments combinations in the experiment comprising 4 levels ofN (0,60,120 and 180 kg/ha designated as Nn, Nso, NI20 and NIMlhrespectively) and 3 levels ofB (0, 0.4 and 0.6 kg/ha designated as Bn, Bo,. and Bn,iI,respectively), The individual and combined effects of nitrogen (N) and boron (B) on growth, yield of tomato were studied. With increasing the levels of N, all the yield contributing characters and yield of tomato increased up to the 120 kg N/ha. Application of N @ 120 kg/ha gave the highest plant height (122.46 em), flower clusters per plant (9.67), flowers per cluster (10.44), fruits per cluster (5,76), fruits per plant (52.44);fruit weight per plant (1.60 kg), fruit weight per plot (19.14 kg) and fruit yield (48.33 t/ha). Application of B @ 0,6 kg/ha also gave the highest values of all these parameters. In interaction, N @ 120 kg/ha along with B @ 0,6 kg/ha produced the highest plant height (142,2 em), flower clusters per plant (12.67), flowers per cluster (11,67), fruits per cluster (6,33), fruits per plant (67.33), fruit weight per plant (1.95 kg), fruit weight per plot (23,20 kg) and fruit yield (58.59 t/ha).

    EFFECT OF SEED TREATMENT WITH SOME BOTANICALS ON SEEDLING GROWTH AND SEVERITY OF BIPOLARIS LEAF BLIGHT (Bipolaris sorokiniana) OF WHEAT

    An experiment was conducted to find out the effect of 13 botanicals on seedling growth and severity of Bipolaris leaf blight (Bipolaris sorokinianov of wheat in a net house of Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during November 2006 to March 2007. It was found that seed treatment with Allium cepa, A. sativum, Curcuma longa, Aegle marmelos, Lawsonia alba. Allamanda cathanica extracts caused considerable increase in germination and seedling growth. Pre-sowing treatment of seeds with all of the plant extracts caused significant reduction in disease severity over control. The severity index values under control were 1.55.2.00.3.22.4.55,4.66 and 4.66, respectively at flag leaf. booting, panicle initiation, !lowering, milk and hard dough stages of wheat plants. Seed treatment with the materials reduced disease severity within the range of 0.33-1.22,0.99-1.77. 1.11-2.00. 1.22-2.22. 1.66- 3.00 and 200-3.83. respectively for the above mentioned growth stronges of the crop.

    EFFECT OF SOWING DATE AND NITROGEN ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF FRENCH BEAN (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

    The experiment was conducted to investigate The effect or Sowing date and nitrogen on the growth and Yield or French bean (OARI Zhar Shecm-I) at the farm of Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University. Dhaka. 111C experiment included two factors: A: Sowing date (TI -15 November, Tz -30 November. T, -IS December and T. -30 December) and Factor 0: Nitrogen level (N. - 0 kg N/ha, NI -45 kg N/ha. N1- 90 kg N/ha and Nj -135 kg Nllm). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCI3() with three repltcations. The results of this study revealed that treatment TI gave the highest yield of the green pod (15.6 t/ha) among the other treatments. Nitrogen fertilizer also showed significant variation among the truncate and '1 produced the highest green pod yield (15.7 rha). Thus. th" ,Iudy demonstrated that TI ! gave the highest green pod yield of French bean (17.9 (1113)as well as the highest net return (TK. I. 70.023/b:l) and benefit-cost ratio (2.7) among the other treatment combinations.

    Frequency Domain Linear Prediction-Based Robust Text-Dependent Speaker Identification

    Speaker identification is a biometric technique of determining an unknown speaker's identity among a number of speakers using distinguish latent information of uttered speech. Crime investigation, security control, telephone banking and trading, and information reservation are some applications of this technique. Frequency Domain Linear Prediction (FDLP) is a time-frequency-based feature has been derived using 2-D autoregressive model. This feature was constructed from sub-bands short frame energies estimation. FDLP has been used in this study to propose a robust text-dependent speaker identification technique. The clean features were used to obtain speaker behavioural model. Support vector machine has been used to train the proposed method. This presented study was tested in both clean and noisy conditions to validate the method extensively. The proposed method got significant improved performance over all traditional methods performances in noisy conditions. The obtained performance was indicated; the proposed method was very robust to noises and showed consistent performance irrespective to noises.

    GFCC-Based Robust Gender Detection

    Gender classification technique is a part of the signal processing comprises with feature extraction and behavioural gender modelling. Fundamental frequency and pitch are mostly used as feature for gender detection due to their unique characteristics in voice source. In this study, Gammatone Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (GFCC)-based robust gender classification method has been presented. This study was accomplished using speech samples from a text-dependent data set. The prototype gender behavioural modelling was done using Gaussian mixture model (GMM) to obtain better performance and only clean signal was used to train the model. The performance of the proposed method was tested under both clean and contaminated conditions. The clean signal was contaminated using nine different noises at a range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) from 0 dB to 10 dB. The obtained performance showed the proposed method was very robust against noise and the average performance at 0 dB SNR was almost 100% for female and 92% for male irrespective to noises. So, it could be said the proposed method performance was almost noise invariant.

    Major Problems and Challenges of Egg Production and Marketing in Bangladesh

    Currently poultry sector is one of the most promising sectors for Bangladesh. This sector can provide various opportunities to increase our national GDP. Ma jor concerns of the study were focusing on the entire problems of the poultry sector. Data were collected from 19 reputed layer farms owner and 48 egg trad ers located in two Upazila at Mymensingh district. In this study, some problems were considering such as major marketing problems were economic problems, lack of information system, improper supply of medicine and vaccines, lack of adequate and suitable transportation system and price instability. The study also evaluates some specific measures to minimize the existing problems in the poul try sector and they are as government interfere in capital, providing right infor mation of layer farming system, provision of adequate supply of medicine and veterinary services, development of transportation system, price stability by market monitoring. Combined with helpful government policies like extension of subsidies to layer farm owners will help Bangladesh to play a significant role in layer products trade besides meeting the ever increasing domestic demand. Results suggested that to increase layer production and develop the layer indus try, the government as well as other private integrators can take initiatives to es tablish an effective and well organized layer farming system in Bangladesh. The study also provides useful information to the researchers for further research in this area. © Society of Agriculture, Food and Environment (SAFE) Introduction The poultry sector continues to grow and industrialize in many parts of the world. An increasing population, greater purchasing power and urbanization have been strong drivers of growth. The poultry sub-sector is an important avenue in fostering agricultural growth and reduce malnutrition for the people in Bangladesh (Silva and Rankin, 2014). It is an inte gral part of farming system in Bangladesh and has created di rect, indirect employment opportunity including support ser vices for about 6 million people (Ansarey, 2012). This sub sector has proved as an attractive economic activity, thereby, indicating its` importance for the entire economy. The sector accounts for 14% of the total value of livestock output and is growing rapidly (Raihan and Mahmud, 2008).     Marketing System and Efficiency of Egg in Selected Areas of Mymensingh District in Bangladesh

    The poultry sector continues to grow and industrialize in many parts of the world. The study was undertaken to analyze the marketing system of commer cially produced eggs, estimate cost and margin of egg traders in some selected areas of Mymensingh district in Bangladesh in 2018. Sixty (60) respondents were selected as total sample size where 19 were layer farm owner and 48 were egg traders. Two Upazila of Mymensingh district (Mymensingh Sadar and Trishal) were selected based on the production concentration and marketing. Two villages from each Upazila were selected for survey and data were collect ed from the traders for the study. Five different channels were identified accord ing to present egg marketing system. The average gross return of bepari, whole saler and retailer for 100 eggs are found Tk. 26.67, Tk. 31.82 and Tk. 37.14, respectively. The average cost of bepari, wholesaler and retailer for 100 eggs were found Tk.11.41, Tk.13.54 and Tk.15.78, respectively. The net margin of 100 eggs were calculated and found Tk.15.26, Tk. 18.28 and Tk. 21.37 respec tively for bepari, wholesaler and retailer. The producer share was higher i.e. 86.56% and price spread was lower (Tk. 85.84) in channel IV. In case of effi ciency channel IV was more efficient than other channels. Results suggested that, development of this enterprise is helpful in employment generation and poverty alleviation. The outcomes of this study may contribute to accurate and reliable data and other necessary information from the field level and future egg marketing system of various regions in Bangladesh.

    POTENTIALITY OF SEED TREATMENT WITH SOME PLANT EXTRACT TO CONTROL BIPOLARIS LEAF BLIGHT (Bipolaris sorokiniana) AND INCREASING YIELD OF WHEAT

    A study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of plant extracts to control Bipolaris leaf blight (Bipolaris sorokiniana) and increasing grain yield of wheat. Water extracts of neem (Azadirachta indica). 'allamanda'(Allamallda cathartica), 'mehedi'(Lawsonia alba) leaves, 'bishkatali' (Polygonum hydropiper) shoot, 'garlic'(Allium sativum) clove, onion (Allium cepa) bulb, black cumin (Nigella sativa) seed, and ginger (Zingiber officinalis) rhizome were prepared at a concentration of I :2. Wheat seeds were treated with individual plant extracts. Seeds were also treated with Vitavax-200 for comparison. It was found that all the plant extracts except mehedi increased seed germination on blotter. A remarkable reduction in incidence of seed borne Bipolaris sorokiniana was achieved with the botanicals. The disease severity was the lowest under Vitavax-200, followed by bishkatali and garlic extract. The highest disease severity was recorded under control. The increasd grain yield over control was achieved with extracts of onion, garlic, black cumin, ginger, bishkatali and neem. The efficacy of plant extracts to decrease disease severity and to increase zrain vield was more or less similar to that of Vitavax -200.

    Selection and Pathways to Next Generation Innovations of Speed Over Ground (SOG) Measurement Technologies to Overcome Harsh Conditions and Technological Limitations: A Review

    Determining speed over ground (SOG) with high precision is a critical challenge for marine and aerial vehicles due to various harsh conditions and technological limitations. Here, we review and evaluate current SOG measurement technologies, such as water speed sensor, air speed sensor, global navigation satellite system (GNSS), underwater acoustic positioning system (UAPS), Doppler velocity log (DVL), Doppler navigation system (DNS), simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), conventional inertial navigation system (INS), and their performance amidst harsh condition and technological limitations. It reveals the vulnerabilities, and noting their limitations when faced with stressors and technological challenges, thus highlighting the urgent need for resilient and innovative SOG measurement solutions. A substantial focus is placed on emerging sensor technologies, including cold atom inertial sensor (CAIS), micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems (MOEMS) inertial sensor, and particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) inertial sensor. Each of them presents a new frontier in navigational sciences, offering the potential for improved precision and robustness against harsh conditions that traditionally hamper SOG measurement accuracy. However, they still suffer from technological limitations like integration error over time. The Galilean projectile model-based SOG Sensor is spotlighted for its potential to provide a contactless, environment-independent SOG measurement, which is less prone to both harsh conditions and technological limitations like integration error over time. As such, this article outlines a pathway toward selecting the best SOG sensor based on harsh conditions and technological limitations for particular applications, as well as future research direction that could significantly enhance the reliability and accuracy of SOG measurements, ensuring safer and efficient navigation
