It has also sparked fears of an impending economic crisis and recession. Social distancing, self-isolation and travel restrictions have lead to a reduced workforce across all economic sectors and caused many jobs to be lost. Schools have closed down, and the need for commodities and manufactured products has decreased. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in over 4.3 million confirmed cases and over 290,000 deaths globally. Rabiul; Monir, Minhaj Uddin; Islam, ,KamrulDespite the numerous exemplary efforts taking place to develop sustainable systems of power generation globally, coal will remain an essential and significant part of Bangladesh’s energy generation. The Government of Bangladesh needs to provide a more reliable and transparent power market for citizens to meet Bangladesh’s rising energy demand. Consequently, various coal-based mega projects were undertaken by the Bangladesh government to ensure an affordable and reliable power supply. Half of the targeted electricity was designated to be produced from imported coal. Hence, the development strategy or the reformation of policy in the energy sector may contribute to the current shortcomings in policy approach including inadequate energy infrastructure, regulation and co-ordination issues. This review focuses on the increasing demand for coal, supply issues, socio-environmental requirements and significant coal import to encourage realistic advancement of the energy sector in Bangladesh. Moreover, forecasting the requirement of coal for mega power projects from 2021 to 2041 was highlighted. The water resource supply for coal-based power plants and approaches for reducing CO2 and other emissions were also addressed. Finally, initiatives for fulfilling Sustainable Development Goals in the Bangladesh energy sector were also discussed in this review.Item A study on estimation of methane gas emission from beef cattle of Bangladesh(Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. Khulshi, Chattagram-4225, 2022-09) Islam, AminulPopulation is increasing day by day in Bangladesh. So people are very much engaged in farming now a days. As farming is increasing, so the effect of greenhouse gas also increasing, which is a great threat to our environment. The agricultural sector emits large quantities of greenhouse gas. Which is responsible for global warming (Jahan and Azad 2013). Some of the major greenhouse gas are methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide etc. In our study, we have discussed about the methane emission from beef cattle in Bangladesh. We followed intergovernmental panel of climate change (IPCC) guideline in our whole study (Das et al., 2020). We used Tier 1 and Tier 2 methods for the calculation of methane emission from beef cattle of Bangladesh. In tier 1 method we calculated the methane emission by using emission factor provided by IPCC 2006 and 2019. According to IPCC 2019, we also calculated the methane emission using tier 2 method which is based on dry matter intake. Finally we have compared our calculated value. After calculation, in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 total emission of methane from beef cattle based on Tier-1 (IPCC-2006) is 9990.00Gg, 10777.75Gg, 9996.75Gg and 10111.50Gg respectively. Again based on IPCC-2019 emission of methane is 17020.00Gg, 17169.50Gg, 17031.50Gg and 17227.00Gg respectively. Using Tier 2 method (IPCC-2019) methane emission from beef cattle in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 is 16087.60Gg, 16228.91Gg, 16098.47Gg and 16283.26Gg respectively.Item A study on promoting and positioning The Super Star Brand (fan, lights, accessories) through their retailers(BRAC University, 2017-05) Islam, Aminul; Mamoon, MahreenThis whole report focuses how SSG’s marketing efforts is being done to position the brand in the consumers mind. Over all this report represents the whole marketing activities in a miniature form. It also includes the company’s marketing positions hierarchical chart. In addition this report also includes a quantitative research and recommendations for further improving the brand position to convert shallow customers to entrenched customers. The company is spending good amount of money for creating high exposures which is reflected in my research report. At the end of the report I have concluded so many recommendations for the company, overall findings, research objective and my job responsibilities as an intern and data analysis method. They not only see an image, but can judge the importance of different parts of a visual area. They can easily differentiate a running car from its background, can tell the color of different objects in an image and can focus attention to some important parts of a visible scene. The value of this visual power of human is easily understood if one thinks about these. Achieving this wonderful human quality using machine is one of the most precious goals of today’s scientific researches. With the continuous advancement of imaging technologies, more and more visual data are being collected all over the world. But, a major portion of these data are left unprocessed. Image processing is used to process these types of visual data. For all image processing techniques, the initial goal is to find some target region for extracting information from the image. Saliency detection is the technique of computationally finding important regions of an image. It is usually done using the contrast information present in an image. Seam map is the combination of cumulative summation of energy values from different directions. In this thesis, a combined method is proposed which uses seam importance map along with boundary aware color importance map. Color importance map is the weighted average of different color channels of Lab color space. Some intermediate combinations which are closer to the proposed optimized version but differ in the optimization technique are also presented in this thesis. Several standard benchmark datasets including the famous MSRA 10k and ECSSD datasets are used to evaluate performance of the suggested method. The proposed saliency model has been compared with several state of the art methods for each dataset. The qualitative and quantitative results from those omparisons make things easier to understand. Besides that, comparison with those state of the art techniques and precision recall curves and F-beta values found from the experiments on several datasets prove the superiority of the proposed method. This robust saliency model can improve almost all types of vision related applications including object detection, robotics, medical image analysis, content aware image resizing etc. In this research, the proposed architecture of saliency detection technique has been applied into a simple implementation of pedestrian detection. Its application has significantly improved the result of pedestrian detection in terms of performance and accuracy.Item AI-generated academic assesment portal with performance tracking(BRAC University, 2025-06) Dipu, MD. Asif; Abedin, Jawaril MunshadArtificial intelligence revolutionized numerous digital education operations yet the assessment of academic performance continues to prove especially difficult to overcome. Unfortunately, static question banks and rigid answer matching systems, currently used in making the assessment, can’t provide personalized learning experiences. These systems have difficulty acknowledging proper semantic responses and frequently misidentify them. This paper describes an academic assessment portal developed by AI technology which combines performance tracking features to solve existing evaluation problems. The system uses the multilingual mT5 model to automate the production of questions that match different domains and contextual requirements. The Bangla Transformer system dedicated to evaluation answers detects properly paraphrased responses that improve testing precision. Student performance directs the platform to automatically adjust questions until each student experiences a suitable learning challenge for their current level. The AI system evaluates student responses by analyzing context which enables it to improve both accuracy and fairness of the assessment process. Students obtain performance-related data about their areas of expertise through performance tracking while automated question generation frees educators to teach without additional paperwork. The platform delivers both robustness and user-friendly interface through the use of Flask, React.js. Initial test results indicate that self-assessment performance tracking platforms outperform other methods, showing an accuracy improvement of 40%-50% due to personalized tracking, adaptive learning, and data-driven feedback mechanisms.Item Antibiotic-contaminated wastewater treatment and remediation by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs)(Scopus, 2024-05-24) Mahmud, Foysal; Banhi, Tabassum Sunjida; Roy, Hridoy; Dihan, Musfekur Rahman; Islam, Md. RabiulAntibiotics are extensively used in health sectors, animal husbandry, and agriculture, which raises serious concerns nowadays due to their presence in surface water, groundwater, soil, sediment, and plants. Antibiotics in water can cause the accumulation and spread of antibiotic-resistant genes that have a serious impact on the environment. Moreover, due to the refractory and persistent nature of antibiotics, conventional wastewater treatment technologies including physio-chemical and biological treatments are inefficient for antibiotic wastewater treatment. In recent times, Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes (EAOPs) have been reported to be effective in the treatment of antibiotic-contaminated wastewater. These specialized techniques produce very reactive and oxidizing intermediate •OH radicals which readily degrade the antibiotics. In this article three most important EAOPs, Electro Oxidation (EO), Photo Electro Catalytic Oxidation (PEC), and Electro Fenton (EF) are reviewed along with their classification, performance in different antibiotics, influencing factors e.g., anode-cathode materials, pH, current density, initial concentration, temperature, and supporting electrolytes. These processes offer eco friendly, sustainable, cost-effective methods for treating antibiotics. Moreover, the feasibility of EAOPs in industrial wastewater treatment has not been properly established due to toxic intermediates, high cost, incapable to handle a large volume of wastewater, its performance only at ideal conditions, degrade only a few antibiotics, and mass transfer limitations. Consequently, combining membrane separation and conventional biological treatments as pre- or post-treatments of EAOPs can effectively address toxicity reduction and the handling of large volumes of wastewater. In addition, the energy consumption in a single EO process is higher than the combined processes. To constructively write this review, data have been collected from renowned publishers e.g., ScienceDirect, Springer, Willey, American Chemical Society Publications, etc. The possibilities, challenges, and future outlooks for the scale-up and commercialization of existing lab-based EAOPs have been discussed for the sustainable use of EAOPs in treating toxic and bio persistent antibiotic compounds from wastewater. Furthermore, the research gaps mentioned in this paper can encourage future researchers to utilize the merits of EAOPs and combined processes for achieving high degradation efficiency of antibiotics at low cost and establishing it commercially.Item Application of image processing in traffic control system & license plate detection(BRAC University, 2017-08) Islam, Aminul; Ahmed, Nafiz; Hasnain, Toaha; Tabassum, Iffat; Das, AvijitA license plate detect system is one type of intelligent transportation system. It is a type of technology in which the software enables computer system to read automatically the license number plate of vehicle from digital pictures. Reading automatically the number plate means converting the pixel information of digital image into the ASCII text of the number plate. The main objective is to use same operations repeatedly in such a way that the number plate of vehicle can be identified accurately. As the problem of urban traffic congestion spreads, there is a pressing need for the introduction of advanced and to the technology equipment improve state of the control traffic nowadays and traffic problem increasing because the growing of are vehicles and we also have limited resource providing by current infrastructure. The simplest way to solve it is traffic monitoring system. Another way is to use electronic sensors in order to detect vehicles, and produce signal that cycles. We propose a system for controlling the traffic light by image processing. The system will detect vehicles through images instead of using electronic sensors embedded in the pavement. A camera will be installed alongside the traffic light. The framework emphasizes a user-centered design (UCD) approach that takes into account the unique needs and preferences of patients, nonpatient users, and healthcare professionals (HCPs). Based on the results of these studies, we analyzed and refined the RA designs and proposed a UCD-based conceptual framework for designing effective and user-friendly healthcare RAs. The paper aims to provide an initial resource for researchers, designers, and developers interested in developing RAs for healthcare contexts by thinking of UCD techniques.Item Development of artificially engineered nanoparticles by surface modification and their biomedical applications(©University of Dhaka, 2024-11-18) Islam, AminulThe effectiveness of cobalt-substituted magnesium ferrite Mg1-xCoxFe2O4 (MCFO) (0 x 1 with x = 0.1) and polymer nanohybrids for biomedical applications, particularly as the contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging/angiography and thermotherapeutic applications for malignant lesion, was investigated by synthesizing these nanoparticles using the chemical co-precipitation method. Nanomaterials employed as effective media for successful applications in the disciplines mentioned above are determined by the engineering parameter, which works as the figure-of merit: the relaxivities (r1 and r2) for MRI and specific loss power (SLP). Particle size, shape, distribution, and coating agent affect magnetization and anisotropy, which impacts the parameters of relaxivities and specific loss power. It is intriguing to note that the anisotropy and particle volume substantially control the relaxivities and specific loss powers, which Néel and Brownian relaxation govern. Relaxivities and specific loss of power can be either beneficial or detrimental by hysteresis loss. When the ratio of the MRI negative relaxivity values (r2) to the positive reference value (r1) is high, the contrast agent has a negative effect, and vice versa when the ratio is low. The values of r1 and r2 are highly sensitive to the nanoparticle's magnetic and structural characteristics. Again, SLP is highly dependent on magnetic anisotropy, and limited anisotropy will always increase the value of SLP, leading to better hyperthermia performance. Spin flip at radio rf magnetic fields and Neel relaxation are impeded under higher anisotropy conditions. Again, Brownian relaxation is frustrated by the large particle size. Anisotropy and structural characteristics were investigated in Co-substituted Magnesium ferrite with an atom fraction increase of x = 0.1. MRI/MRA contrast agents were studied using particles VIII of all compositions in their as-prepared state. Particle size dependence SLP and temperature rise for hyperthermia and/or laser ablation were studied by varying the size of the particles through controlled annealing at 200°C, 400°C, 600°C, and 800°C, and then encapsulating the particles in chitosan. This study aims to learn the structure-property relationship and their effect on magnetic nanoparticle-mediated MRI and thermotherapy using MCFO and chitosan/dextran/polyethylene glycol (PEG) nanohybrid.Item Doctor Appointment System: Medicate(Daffodil International University, 2019-05) Islam, Aminul; Mia, Razib; Hasan, Md. This will help common people to get instant support without wasting time and effort even they will get this service from home and abroad. By using this system people can easily get to know about the timing of doctor’s counselling period and make their meeting whenever they want. Proper categorized list will make people more comfort to browse their expected doctors.Item Effectiveness of alternative dispute resolution on the recovery of non-performing loans under Artha Rin Adalat: A study on nationalized commercial banks in Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2019-10-02) Islam, AminulBangladesh is a densely populated country, and many people are living under the poverty line. To get them out of poverty to prosperity, people frequently take loans from different financial institutions including nationalized commercial banks. As people are poor, sometimes they cannot repay their loans in due time. As such, they have considered as loan defaulter. Finally, financial institutions or Nationalized Commercial Banks (NCBs) have to file suits to recover their loans. However, because of the absence of any specific law, the process of recovery was tedious and time-consuming for financial institutions. Therefore, a law titled Artha Rin Adalat Ain, 1990 enacted for accelerated recovery of such nonperforming loans. Nevertheless, this law did not meet with success, due to some loopholes including very low recovery lies in the very slow execution of the decree. Thereafter, a new law enacted in 2003 for this purpose. To accelerate the process of recovery, the Artha Rin Adalat Ain 2003 emphasized on the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to settle disputes on non-performing loans as a mandatory procedure to resolve these disputes. ADR is the unique feature added in this new law. The issue of recovery of non-performing loans is not only crucial but also remains complex for the financial sector of Bangladesh. The legal process is costly, time consuming, complex, and sometimes corrupted. Therefore, Artha Rin Adalat Ain, 2003 has included ADR system for recovering non-performing loans from borrowers so that good relation can maintain among the borrowers and NCBs, and the latter can maintain their viability with lower operating costs. The level of non-performing loans negatively relates to bank efficiency and causes a hindrance to economic stability and growth of economics. Although trials in Artha Rin courts are contributing positively towards the recovery of NPLs, in this era of globalization, world business communities are eager to use ADR for the quick settlement of international business and trade disputes. The business community has now recognized that ADR is the acceptable mode of dispute resolution. It is felt that ADR is less costly, less adversarial and therefore more conducive to the preservation of business relationships, which is of vital importance in the business community. The use of ADR has grown tremendously in the international business in recent years. The growth has facilitated by several factors including tremendous expansion of international commerce, and increased globalization. However, in our present legal system, increasing expenses of litigation, delay in disposal of cases and huge backlogs have virtually shaken the confidence of the people in the judiciary. In this backdrop, we cannot but ponder about the device like ADR, which is potentially useful for reducing the backlogs and delay in courts. Since ADR is much cheaper and speedier than the existing formal legal system, it can greatly mitigate the suffering of poor litigants. To fulfil the objective of this research, Artha Rin Courts of Dhaka District, as well as NCBs of Dhaka Districts, have been considered. While supporting the arguments of this thesis, opinions of 30 Bankers, 40 borrowers, 20 mediators, as well as 20 experts‘ judges have taken through questionnaire survey. After data analysis, I found that Artha Rin ADR has not improved NPL resolution and recovery significantly as the enforcement of the law is not properly executed for recovery the bank loans. Furthermore, bankers are not empowered or delegated with required authority (e.g. waiver a part of interests etc.), to make a successful ADR with their borrowers. Thus, banker‘s power during ADR sessions should be provided and may be recognized through Artha Rin Adalat Ain, 2003. In addition, strong security for loans should be ensured for the success of ADR under Artha Rin Adalat Ain, 2003. Pertinently, increasing awareness of the benefits of ADR in comparison with the trial, training to judges, mediators and lawyers, the appointment of Panel mediators, and enhancing Judges‘ authority and power in conducing Artha Rin ADR could increase the effectiveness of the ADR under Artha Rin Adalat Ain, 2003. Therefore, introduction of settlement conference and/or Med-arb is suggested in this thesis. This research will be helpful for the recovery the NPLs and will accelerate the financial condition of the banking sectors of Bangladesh. Furthermore, findings of this thesis will be beneficial for the policy makers to amend Artha Rin Adalat Ain, 2003 or to enact or enforce new laws for the development of the financial sectors of Bangladesh. RabiulA significant progress has been made to increase electricity generation capacity in the country over the last decade. The electricity supply for growing demand is the foremost challenge of the government, as the country move towards the vision of middle-income status by 2021 and high-income by 2041. The energy security is the concern due the running out of gas supply soon. Despite significant progress on energy in recent years, the goal of access to electricity for all would not be attainable without implementation of a consistent national energy policy. Well-coordinated national energy policy is required to achieve sustainable development goals of the country. Priorities for action and regulatory framework of energy need to identify to overcome energy crisis. Long-term energy planning and private financing policy are also crucial to extend the pace of progress in the energy sector. This review provides insights into the energy policies at different sectors, notably coal fired electricity in Bangladesh. The results revealed that the effective and efficient CO2 emission could be reduced from power generating sector by introducing advanced fuel technologies and management system. Besides, higher thermal and mechanical efficiency can be obtained by initiating the combined power cycle systems in energy sector. The achievement in energy sector as well as challenges facing in ensuring sustainable energy is highlighted. The key challenges in the existing legal framework and substantial progress improving energy efficiency are also discussed in this review.Item Escaping the Middle-Income Trap: A Study on a Developing Economy(The World Bank Publications, 2023-11-23) Islam, Md. Sharif; Ahsan, ArifMiddle-Income Trap (MIT) is a phenomenon wherein a nation finds itself unable to progress from a middle-income status to a high-income economy. Despite Bangladesh’s rapid economic growth as a developing economy following its transition to the lower-middle-income category, the country faces various economic challenges that may impede its advancement to higher-income tiers. Consequently, this study delves into whether Bangladesh can successfully navigate its way out of the lower-middle-income and upper-middle-income traps. To assess this, the study initially employed a time threshold method known as the “Number of Years Method.” It determined that Bangladesh is poised to break free from the lower-middle-income and upper-middle-income traps by 2029 and 2041, provided the nation can sustain a per capita Gross National Income (GNI) growth rate of 9.69%. To further evaluate the sustainability of this income growth, the study utilized three quantitative approaches: Catch-up Growth, Growth Report, and Growth Acceleration. Interestingly, these methods yielded contrasting results. The insights generated by this study hold significance for economists and policymakers in Bangladesh and other developing economies facing similar challenges. Developing countries are the most affected by this hazardous and toxic medical waste due to poor management systems. In recent years, Bangladesh has experienced increasing medical waste generation with estimated growth of 3 % per year. The existing healthcare waste management in Bangladesh is far behind the sustainable waste management concept. To achieve an effective waste management structure, Bangladesh has to implement life cycle assessment (LCA) and circular economy (CE) concepts in this area. However, inadequate data and insufficient research in this field are the primary barriers to the establishment of an efficient medical waste management systen in Bangladesh. This study is introduced as a guidebook containing a comprehensive overview of the medical waste generation scenario, management techniques, Covid-19 impact from treatment to testing and vaccination, and the circular economy concept for sustainable waste management in Bangladesh. The estimated generation of medical waste in Bangladesh without considering the surge due to Covid-19 and other unusual medical emergencies would be approximately 50,000 tons (1.25 kg/bed/day) in 2025, out of which 12,435 tons were predicted to be hazardous waste. However, our calculation estimated that a total of 82,553, 168.4, and 2300 tons of medical waste was generated only from handling of Covid patients, test kits, and vaccination from March 2021 to May 2022. Applicability of existing guidelines, and legislation to handle the current situation and feasibility of LCA on medical waste management system to minimize environmental impact were scrutinized. Incineration with energy recovery and microwave sterilization were found to be the best treatment techniques with minimal environmental impact. A circular economy model with the concept of waste minimizaton, and value recovery was proposed for sustainable medical waste management. This study suggests proper training on healthcare waste management, proposing strict regulations, structured research allocation, and implementation of public-private partnerships to reduce, and control medical waste generation for creating a sustainable medical waste management system in Bangladesh.Item Improper vendor management strategies and risk augmentation of WorldFish Bangladesh(BRAC University, 2020-04) Islam, Aminul; Chowdhury, Hasan MaksudMeasuring risks and eliminating them as much as possible is very important for any kind of organization to be successful. Risks arising from improper vendor management strategies can be a major threat for a company’s existence. Insufficient number of approved vendors and improper vendor management criteria are two improper vendor management strategies which increases the risk of a company in various aspects. Through the results of this report, it is evident that a company’s risk augmentation from the procurement and vendor management department depends on insufficient number of vendors and improper vendor management criteria. Moreover, the evident has been found through the report is that, these two improper vendors management strategies are being followed by the WorldFish Bangladesh. Furthermore, apart from these two problems it has been found that, some other improper vendor management strategies such as- unaware of vendor’s capabilities, doing business with unapproved vendors without a formal contract, working with inflexible vendors; are also being followed by the WorldFish Bangladesh. We still cannot go out without worrying about getting infected by this deadly virus. Although offices and other work places have started to open, they have to maintain a health protocol set by WHO (World Health Organization). The main reason for this outbreak is the irresponsibility of the people and the authorities regarding maintaining the health protocols. As people do not maintain the health protocols properly, the safety in a work environment is breached and the virus starts to spread. After extended period of lockdown, the world is again returning to its old state by gradually opening the educational institutions and offices. So, to maintain the health protocol with notable integrity, the development of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based Automated Entry System with COVID-19 Symptom Detection is an attempt to reduce COVID-19's spread through making aware people of their conditions. This is accomplished by first developing an RFID-based entry and log data base, then employing a machine learning model to recognize face masks so that the device can detect unauthorized intruder and distinguish between mask and non-mask users. After that the non contact temperature sensor and an oximeter sensor will take physical data to cross check with COVID-19 symptoms. The report discussed about the purpose of the specific server using on ISP, hardware requirementfor the server, choosing software and installation process of the software, stepto step server configuration process and simple troubleshootingof the server.Linux is one of the most great examples of free and open-source software collaboration. The main aim behind this internship work was to establish and develop our skill with upgraded information technology focusing Linuxbased server systems. To address this purpose intensive training and hands on experience on various real -time Linux-based server systemsare mentioned above, has been gained in the internship period.
