Item INTEGRATED USE OF FERTILIZERS AND MANURE IN T.AMAN RICE(Department of Soil Science, 2006-12) ISLAM, SHAHIDULThe study was performed at Shcr-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) Farm on integrated use of fertilizers and manure in T. Aman rice (Var. BRRI dhan 33) during July to Nov. 2007. A Field experiment was conducted in combination with inorganic fertilizers and manure. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with eight treatments and four replications. The treatments were To (control), TL( K45S20 (Recommended dose), T 2 (50% NPKS + St ha 'CD), T3(70% NPKS + 3 t ha4 CD ). T 4 (50% NPKS + 4 t hi' PM ), T 5(70% NPKS + 2.4 t hi' PM ), T 6(50% NPKS + 10 1 hi' DH) and T7(70% NPKS + 6 It ha4 Dl-!). The result demonstrated that N 1 P 15 the yield contributing characters, grain and straw yields were significantly influenced by the added fertilizers and manure. Application of 50% of NPKS fertilizers plus 10 1 ha' dhaincha produced the highest grain yield (5085 kg hi') which was identical to that obtained with 70% of NPKS with 6 t ha4 dhaincha. In case of straw yield, the treatment 1'7 (70% NPKS + 6 t hi' DH) produced the highest yield (5470 kg hi') and the second highest straw yield (5250 kg hi') was obtained from i'6 (50% NPKS + 10 hi' DH) treatment. The grain yield increases over control and ranges between 15 to 76%. The treatments T 6 and T 7 resulted in higher nutrient use efficiency along with higher N. P. K and S uptake by the T. Aman rice. The application of inorganic fertilizer with manure influenced the nutrient concentration in rice grain and straw. The higher grain N, P, K and S concentrations were observed in the treatments where poultiy manure and dhaincha were applied in combination with N P K fertilizers. Grain yield of T. Aman rice was positively correlated with number of effective tiller, plant height, panicle length, filled grains panicle' and straw yield. The combined use of fertilizer and manure resulted in considerable improvement in soil fertility. The combined application of fertilizer and manure increased the % OC, total N, available P and available S in post harvest soils. The overall findings of this study indicate that the integrated use of fertilizer and manure should be encouraged to address the deteriorating soil fertility and increased crop yield of T. Aman rice.Item MITIGATION OF LATE PLANTING-INDUCED COLD STRESS IN TOMATO WITH GIBBERELLIC ACID AND CALCIUM(Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, 2014-12) ISLAM, SHAHIDULThe experiment was conducted in the farm of Sher-e-l3angla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from 15 November 2013 to 15 April 2014 to find out the role of exogenous application of gibberellic acid (GA3) and calcium (Ca2 ) on the improvement of morpho-physiology and fruit yield of tomato placed to late transplanting-induced cold injury. In this study, variety BAR!Tomato 15 was used as a planting material and the treatments consisted of three different times of transplanting, T, First transplanting time (10 December2013), T, = Second transplanting time (20 December2013), I; = Third transplanting time (30 December2013); and six different combination of gibberellic acid and calcium viz. Mo = 0 ppm (IA; and 0mM Ct, Mi = 20 ppm GA3 and 0 mM Ct. Mi = 0 ppm GA3 and 5 mM Ca2 , M;= 20 ppm GA3 and 5mM Ca2', M4= 0 ppm GA3 and 10mM Ca2? and Mc = 20 ppm GA; and 10mM Ca2'. The experiment was laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The total treatment combinations were 18 (3x6). Most of the results of this experiment showed differences to the treatments. The first transplanting time significantly influenced to increased morpho-physiological characters: plant height, number of leaves plant", number of branches plant' and SPAD value of leaf; yield contributing characters: number of flowers plant', number of fruits plant', fruit length, fruit diameter and yield plot4 and ha` compared to late or third transplanting time-induced cold stress. The maximum yield (80.46 t ha") was obtained from Ii whereas the lowest yield was found (58.53 t ha") from T3 transplanting and suggesting that early transplanting time improves fruit yield through promoting the morpho-physiological features of tomato. In this study it was found that different combination of GM and Ca2 mitigated the adverse effects of late transplanting-induced cold stress in tomato. Exogenous foliar application of 20 ppm gibberellic acid (GA3) along with 5 mM calcium (Ca2') improved the morphological characters of tomato except number of branch plant". The yield contributing characters and fruit yield showed statistically significant increased with 20 ppm gibberellic acid (GM) along with 5 mM calcium (Ca2 ). The highest yield 83.99 t ha" yield were found with the 20 ppm gibberellic acid (GA;) along with 5 mM calcium (Ca2D but the lowest 59.92 t ha" yield were recorded from control. These results indicated that combined application of GA; along with Ca2' has positive impact on fruit yield. The interaction between date of transplanting and sole or combined application of GA3 and Ca2 influenced all the morpho-physiological and yield contributing characters and yield of tomato. The highest yield (93.54 t ha") of tomato was obtained with the first transplanting time along with 20 ppm GA3 with 5 mM Ca2 (TiM3) treatment combination, whereas the lowest yield (49.79 t ha") was recorded from LM0, third transplanting date and 0 ppm GA3 and 0 mM Ca2 treatment combination. In addition the treatments combination T3M3 influenced to produce the highest yield 69.09 t ha" out of all the treatment under late transplanting and suggested that 20 ppm GA3 along with 5 mM Ca' successfully mitigate the detrimental effect of cold stress in variety BAR!tomato IS.Item MITIGATION OF SALT-INDUCED DAMAGES IN WHEAT BY EXOGENOUS APPLICATION WITH ASCORBIC ACID, SILICON AND GIBBERELLIN(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2019) ISLAM, SHAHIDULConsidering the salinity issue three studies were conducted to find out the effect of salt stress on morph-physiological and biochemical changes of wheat (BARI Gom26) as well as mitigation of the adverse effect through exogenous application of Ascorbic Acid (AsA), Silicon (Si) and Gibberellic Acid (GA3). The performances of secondary seeds were also evaluated. The studies were conducted at the net house and plant physiology laboratory of Agronomy department, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. In field experiment, four levels of salt stress (0, 50, 80, 120 mM NaCl) were applied on growing media of wheat seedling at 20 days after sowing and grown up to harvest where in laboratory experiment salinity were applied 3 days after sowing grown upto 10 days. In both experiments AsA (2 mM ascorbic acid), Si (200 µM SiO 2 ), GA3 (100 µM gibberallic acid) were applied as foliar spraying (several times with interval) in another set of respective salt stress treatments. In field study salt stress decreased plant growth, biomass, water status and yield attributes by altering ionic balance, hampering osmotic status and reducing chlorophyll (chl) content. In the laboratory experiment, salt stress increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and lipid peroxidation which contributes to alteration of osmotic status and chl content as well as growth and biomass of the plant. However, foliar application of AsA, Si and GA3 on salt affected plant decreased ROS generation, lipid peroxidation and proline production; increased water status and chlorophyll pigments which contribute in improved growth and yield of wheat seedling in contrast to respective stress. Moreover, the findings of the third experiment confirmed that AsA, Si and GA3 enhanced the performance of secondary seeds originated from the first experiment. Considering the results of all experiments GA3 performed better than the AsA and Si in mitigating salt stress.Item REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCES AND DISEASES OF DIFFERENT CROSS BRED COWS AT CENTRAL CATTLE BREEDING AND DAIRY FARM OF BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION & MANAGEMENT, 2020) ISLAM, SHAHIDULThis study was conducted on reproductive performances and diseases status of different cross bred cows of dairy cattle at Cental Cattle Breeding and Dairy Farm Savar, Dhaka to know about existing reproductive performances and diseases occurrence. In this farm, the existing genotypes of cattle were Local (L), Sahiwal (SL), Friesian (F), Australian Friesian Sahiwal (AFS), Local×Friesian (L×F), Sahiwal×Friesian (SL×F), Friesian 62.5% (LF 1 ×F), Friesian 75% (LF 2 ×F). The highest age at puberty was (1392.47±15.49) days found in Friesian. The lowest age at puberty was found (1052.14±9.53) days in F75% cow. The highest gestation length was (285.86 ± 3.92) days and it was for Local milch cow and lowest gestation length was (278.21 ±3.90) days and it was for F75% cow. Maximum number of service per conception was found in case of Friesian (3.412 ± 0.59) and minimum in local (1.49±0.24). Maximum birth weight was found in case of Friesian (37.35 ± 1.15) kg; minimum in Local (16.51±0.96) kg. Highest milk yield was found in case of Friesian (14± 6.64) L/day and lowest in Local (2.1 ± 0.56) L/day. The highest lactation length was observed in Holstein Friesian milch cow (412.13 ± 6.13 days) & lowest was found in Local (196.15±10.17 days). The highest calving interval was found in Holstein-Friesian x Sahiwal (607.04 ± 8.72) days and lowest in Local (479.78±6.24) days. The highest Postpartum heat period was found in case of LF (298.75 ± 5.80) days and lowest in case of Local (102.41±5.75) days milch cow. The maximum average sperm concentration of frozen semen was obtained from SL and the mean value was 1786.2 million/ml. The minimum average sperm concentration of frozen semen was obtained from F62.5% and the mean value was 1246.2 million/ml. The maximum average pH of frozen semen was obtained from F75% and the mean value was 6.3. The maximum average motility of frozen semen was obtained from SL and the mean value was 66.8%. However, the minimum average motility of frozen semen was obtained from L and the mean value was 65%. Nine major reproduction related diseases and disorders were diagnosed among (n=150) registered sick cows. The highest proportion of cows was diagnosed as retained placenta (24.67%; n=37). Reproductive performances of Holstein Friesian were superior to other dairy crossbreds. Friesian75% breed ranked second and performances of other genotypes were nearly similar. The highest occurrence of retained placenta and anoestrus is very alarming which needs further research to decrease the occurrence of such disorders of cows in population.
