    EFFECT OF MORINGA LEAF EXTRACT ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

    The experiment was carried out at Agroforestry Field Laboratory, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during the period from January 2021 to April 2021 to find out “Effect of Moringa leaf extract on growth and yield of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)”. The pot experiment consisted of six treatments viz., T0, T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 (control, 10 ml, 20ml, 30 ml, 40 ml, and 50 ml concentrations of Moringa leaf extract respectively). This experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. In the case of growth parameters, the highest plant height (62.00 cm) and the number of leaf plant-1 (52) were observed in T5 whereas the lowest result was observed from T0 treatment with plant height (38.50 cm) and the number of leaf plant-1 (27). In terms of yield contributing parameters with Moringa leaf extract, T5 showed the lowest days (39 days) to 1st flowering whereas the highest days to 1st flowering were achieved from T0 treatment at 50 days. The highest fruit number plant-1 (24), individual fruit weight (65 g), and fruit yield ha-1 (70.2 t) was found in the treatment T5 while the lowest number of fruits per plant (8), individual fruit weight (44.78 g), fruit yield ha-1 (31.5 t) was obtained from T0 treatment. Different concentrations of Moringa leaf extract with Tomato plant had a strong positive relation with around all parameters. To base on observed data points, predicted that 50 ml concentrations of Moringa leaf extract will supply the optimum Tomato yield ha-1(70.2 t). This study indicates that the Moringa leaf extract used significantly increased the growth and yield of tomato plants in all the trials with fresh leaves, regular branching, healthy fruits, and regular flowering.

    EFFECT OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS ON THE GROWTH, YIELD AND NUTRIENT UPTAKE OF BAR! TOMATO-2 (RATAN)

    The experiment was conducted at the Research Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural dd siA University, Dhaka- 1207. during November 2010 to March 2011 to evaluate the effect of nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) on the growth and yield of BAR] tomato-2 (Ratan). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatments used were: four levels of nitrogen as No : o kg N/ha, Nico: 100 kg N/ha, N 15 0: 150 kg N/ha and N200: 200 kg N/ha and four levels of phosphorous as P0: 0 kg P205/ha, P50: 50 kg P205/ha. P100: 100 kg P205/ha and P150: ISO kg P205 Tha with 16 treatment combinations. Yield and yield contributing characters. N. P and K concentration in plant and post harvest soil were recorded. Plant height at 60 days after transplanting, number of branches per plant. number of flowers per plant, number of fruits per plant and fruit weight per plant increased significantly with increasing N level up to 150 kg /ha, whereas fruit yield increased significantly up to 200 kg N/ha. All these parameters also increased significantly with increasing the level of P application up to 150 kg /1ia. 1-lowever. the treatment combination N2 P350 showed the maximum plant height at harvest (93.62 em), number of flowers per plant (49.86),number of fruits per cluster(3.99), number of fruits per plant (38.30) and rate of fruits setting (76.82%). On the other hand, the treatment combination N200P1 00 produced (lie maximum fruit weight (2.5 kg/plant) and fruit yield (89.93 1./ha). N, P and K concentrations in straw and fruit were the highest in N200P150 treatment. The treatments had no significant effect on pH of post harvest soil. 1-lowever, increasing the N application up to 200 kg/ha increased soil total N and available K o significantly and P content up to N 150 treatment. Application of' P had no significant effect on total nitrogen but P1 50 produced the highest P and K content in soil. N 200P150 combination had the highest N (0. 119%) and P (44.77 ppm) concentration in plant.

    EFFECT OF POTASSIUM AND INDOLE ACETIC ACID ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO

    An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from October 2014 to April 2015to study the effect of potassium and indole acetic acid on growth and yield of tomato. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design 0 = Control, K 1 = 110 kg/ha K 2 O, K = 140 kg/ha K 2 Oand K 3 = 170 kg/ha K O respectively andFactor B 0 = Control, I 1 2 = 25 ppm, I = 50 ppm IAA and.In case ofpotassium, K 2 2 produced the highest yield produced the lowest yield 2 0 treatment produced the highest yield 0 produced the lowest yield produced the highest yield 0 I produced the lowest yield 2 I 2 treatment combination. So, 140 kg/ha K 2 0 O with 50 ppm IAA was found suitable for growth and yield of tomato.

    EFFECT OF SALT INDUSTRIES BYPRODUCT AS A LIQUID FERTILIZER ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF LETTUCE IN SOILLESS CULTURE

    An experiment was conducted at the Central Laboratory in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka; during September 2014 to March 2015 to identify the effect of salt industries byproduct on growth and yield of lettuce in soilless culture. Three nutrient solutions were considered as treatments, viz. T – ½ Rahman and Inden (2012) + 0 ml of salt industries byproduct (SIB), T 2 1 – ½ Rahman and Inden (2012) + 0.5 ml of SIB, T – ½ Rahman and Inden (2012) + 0.75 ml of SIB. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design (CRD). Salt industries byproduct showed significant variation in most of the parameters. The highest plant height (19.53 cm) was recorded from T 1 3 while the lowest plant height (15.61 cm) was found in T 3 . Number of leaves per plant was maximum (10.61) from T whereas minimum (8.80) was recorded T 3 . Higher leaf breadth (11.36 cm) was recorded from T 1 which was statistically similar to T 2 and lower (9.56 cm) was from T , higher leaf length (17.61 cm) was found in T 1 and lower (13.90 cm) was in T 3. 3 Maximum fresh weight of lettuce (48.81g/plant) was recorded from T 1 which was statistically similar to T and minimum (27.94 g/plant) was in T 1 2 . In case of ascorbic acid content, the maximum amount of ascorbic acid content (157.61 mg/100g fresh weight) was recorded from T and the minimum (127.41 mg/100g fresh weight of lettuce) was in T 1 3 . In case of β-carotene content, the maximum amount of β-carotene content (3207 µg/100g fresh weight of lettuce) was recorded from T and the minimum (3100 µg/100g fresh weight) was in T 1. 3 Similar trend was also found in other growth analytical parameters (viz. leaf area, leaf area ratio, leaf mass ratio, root weight ratio, net assimilation ratio and relative growth rate), which was the best from T but LA, RGR and NAR were statistically similar to that of T 2 1 . Meanwhile all the physiological parameters were lowest in T (½ Rahman and Inden (2012) + 0.5 ml of SIB) can be used to get higher amount of ascorbic acid and β-carotene content with moderate yield

    EMERGING STATUS OF ANAPLASMOSIS IN CATTLE IN SIRAJGANJ DISTRICT WITH THERAPEUTIC EVALUATION OF TRADITIONAL TREATMENTS

    The present study was carried out to detect the prevalence of anaplasmosis in cattle at Rayganj and Ullahpara upazila in Sirajganj district of Bangladesh and to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of traditional drugs like Oxetetracycline (Renamycine® ), Imidocarb diproprionate (Babenil® ) and Diminazine aceturate (Berenil® ) against anaplasmosis in cattle. The study was conducted from July 2016 to December 2016. During six months of study period a total of 150 blood samples were collected from clinically ill and suspected cattle, among which 28 samples were positive for anaplasmosis by Geimsa stained blood smear method. It was observed that the overall prevalence of anaplasmosis in cattle was 18.67%, where 16.25% was Geimsa stained blood smear at Rayganj and 21.43% at Ullapara upazila respectively and the variation was not statistically significant (p>0.05). In respect of age the prevalence of anaplasmosis was significantly (p< 0.05) higher (31.7%) in 2-3 years of age group cattle than above 3 years (16.67%) and 6 months to 2 years age (10.20%) group. On the basis of sex, it was observed that the variation in prevalence in male (15.94%) and female (20.99%) was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Breed-wise prevalence was higher in crossbred cattle (19.5%) than local cattle (17.8%), was not statistically significant (p>0.05). It was observed that among three drugs used in this study, the best effectiveness of drugs was seen by Oxytetracycline (Renamycine LA® ) @ 10 mg/kg body weight followed by Imidocarb dipropionate (Babenil® ) @ 3.5 mg/kg body weight moderately and less by Diminazine aceturate (Berenil® ) @ 3.5 mg/kg body weight. From the study it was evident that cattle were infected with the organisms and caused a heavy economic loss which recommended to take necessary preventive measurements.

    ESTIMATION OF BIOMASS CARBON STOCK AT THREE PLANTATION SITES IN SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

    Urban forests play an important role in mitigating hazards evolved due to climate change through sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide. The study was conducted at three plantation systems in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Campus , 169.37 ± 34 Mgha -1 and 206.19 ± 42 Mgha -1 , respectively. When three plantation systems considered as whole, the mean biomass carbon, basal area, stem density, mean DBH were 174.24 ± 21 Mgha -1 , 34.16 ± 3.51 m , 1096.87 ± 121.10, 19.83 ± 1.63 cm, respectively. This study reveals that the urban institutional forest is rich in terms of plant species and carbon stocks and similar work should be extended to other urban green space in order to know the overall carbon stocks in Dhaka City.

    INFLUENCE OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF LETTUCE (Lactuca saliva L.)

    An exJ)crillicnt was conducted at the Farm of Slier-c- Baugla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during November 2007 to February 2008 to study the growth and yield of lettuce as influenced by nitrogen and phosphorus. The experiment consist of two factors; viz, four levels of nitrogen (N 0 0 kg N/ha, N 1 =l 10 kg N/ha, N 2 = 160 kg N/ha, N 3 -210 kg N/ha) and four levels of phosphorus (P 0 =0 kg P/ha, 1 11 -75 kg P/ha, P2 —100 kg P/ha, P 3 -125 kg P/ha).The experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Block Design (ItCI3D) with three replications. In case nitrogen N 3 perfonned maxituwn plant height, number of leaves, leaf yield per plant (393.28 g), yield per hcctare (39.39 (Jha) and minimum was recorded from control. In case of phosphorus tallest plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf yield per plant (385.35 g), yield per hectare (38.57 i/ha) was recorded from P 3 and minimum was recorded from control. Among different treatment combinations N 2P3 contributed the highest (38.09 1/ha) yield. The highest (2.24) benefit cost ratio was obtained from the treatment combination of N2 P1 and the lowest benefit cost ratio(I.46) was recorded from control. So. 160 kg N/ha with 125 kg P/ha of fertilizer was the best combination for lettuce production.

    INFLUENCE OF PLANT SPACING AND WEED MANAGEMENT METHODS ON THE YIELD OF WHITE JUTE (Corchorus capsularis)

    A field experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka during April to August, 2009 with a view to find out the influence of plant spacing and weed management methods on the yield of white jute (var.CVL- 1). The experiment consisted of four weed control methods viz, two times hand weeding with one raking, herbicide Whip Super 9 EC (FenoxapropP-ethyl: C 13H16C1N05 ) application at 15 DAS, two times hand weeding at 20+40 DAS and three times hand weeding at 15+30+45 DAS and Ibur plant spacing viz., 20 cm x 10 cm, 25 cm x 10 cm. 30 cm x 10 cm (20, 25 and 30 cm row to row with plants spaced at 10 cm intervals in the row) and broadcasting. The dominant grass weeds were Cynodon dactylon (43%), Echinochloa colonam (29%) and Eleusine india (22%). Results showed that plant spacing differed significantly and 25 cm x 10 cm spacing gave the highest (3.12 t ha") fibre yield which was statistically similar with 20 cm x 10 cm. Two times weeding and one raking gave the highest (3.12 t hi') fibre yield which was statistically similar with herbicide application (2.97 t ha"). Interaction effect showed highest fiber yield (4.02 t ha") was obtained from 20 cm x 10 cm spacing with herbicide application. Whip Super 9 EC @ 615 ml ha" effectively controlled the grass weeds providing higher fibre yield and net 7.13 taka return per taka invested whereas 6.51, 5.18 and 5.34 taka from two times hand weeding with one raking, two times hand weeding and three times hand weeding, respectively.

    MANAGEMENT OF OKRA YELLOW MOSAIC VIRUS (OYMV) THROUGH CONTROLLING INSECT VECTOR WITH IMIDACLOPRID AND LIGHT REFLECTING MULCH

    A field experiment was conducted at the central farm of Sher-e- Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, during March to July, 2017. The aim of the study was to investigate the varietal performance of two popular okra varieties namely BARI Dherosh-1 and Green finger against Okra yellow mosaic virus (OYMV) by controlling the insect vectors with Imidacloprid and light reflecting silver color mulch. Two experiments were carried out in two blocks layouted with RCBD and four treatments viz. T 0 (control/no spray), T 1 (only mulching), T 2 (1 spray+ mulching) and T (3 times spray) with three replications. The mulch was used at 15 DAS and insecticide was sprayed at 30 DAS and continued with 15 days interval. At 95 DAS, the lowest disease incidence (%) was estimated in T (one spray+ mulching) that were 34.72 % and 19.65 % in BARI Dherosh-1 and Green finger respectively. The highest disease incidence (%) was estimated in T 0 2 (untreated/control) that was 73.71 % in BARI Dherosh-1 and 51.11 % in Green finger. In case of morphological parameters; the highest number of leaves, flowers and fruits per plant was recorded in T (one spray+ mulching) and that was 46.33, 9.33, 7.00 in BARI Dherosh-1 and 48.00, 12.33, 10.67 in Green finger respectively up to last harvesting. Yield and yield contributing characters were significantly varied among the treatments. The highest yield per plant and plot was obtained in T (one spray+ mulching) treatment in case of both varieties (0.15 kg/plant, 2.86 kg/plot in BARI Dherosh-1 and 0.24 kg/plant, 4.37 kg/plot in Green finger). The highest plant height was also found in T 2 (one spray+ mulching) in both varieties (128.62 cm and 130.33 cm respectively). It was also observed that when percent disease incidence increased, the yield of okra was also decreased. However, considering the economic conditions/cost-benefit ratio T 2 2 (one spray+ mulching) gave the best results in terms of controlling the insect vector whitefly.

    PROBLEMS FACED BY THE BEAN FARMERS OF PABNA DISTRICT

    The purpose of the study was to ascertain the problems faced by the farmers in bean production and to explore the relationships between the problems faced by the bean farmers and their selected characteristics. The study was conducted in four villages of two unions under Atghoria upazilla of Pabna district. Data for this study were collected from 106 bean farmers by using an interview schedule during 15 dec, 2017 to 15 jan, 2018. The interview survey revealed that highest proportion (71.70 percent) of the farmers had medium problem faced in bean production, while 16.04 percent had high and 12.26 percent had low problem faced. Among various problems faced by the farmers non-availability of quality pesticides was the highest followed by nonavailability of quality fertilizers. Lack of irrigation was the least important problem. Correlation analysis indicated that education, training exposure, organizational participation, extension media contact and farmers’ knowledge had significant negative relationship with their problem faced. Age had significant positive relationship with their problem faced. The characteristics, namely family members, farm size, annual family income, bean cultivation area, and credit received by the farmers had no significant relationship with their problem faced.

    RESPONSE OF CHICKPEA (Cicer arietinum L.) TO INTEGRATED NITROGEN AND IRRIGATION MANAGEMENT

    An experiment was conducted at Shcr-c-Bangla Agricultural University farm. Dhaka to study the response of chickpea (Cicer arietinurn 14 cv. BARI chhola-5 to integrated nitrogen and irrigation management during the period from November 2006 to March 2007. 'l'hc trial comprised often treatments as T1 = no fenilizr and no irrigation (control), 12 = 20 kg N hi' as basal without irrigation. 13 = 20 kg N ha' as basal with one irrigation at flower initiation stage. T4 = 30 kg N hi' as basal without irrigation , T5 = 30 kg N hi' as basal with one irrigation at flower initiation stage. T (, = 40 kg N hi' as basal without irrigation, T 7 = 40 kg N hi' as basal with one irrigation at flower initiation stage, T = 10 kg N hi' as basal and 10 kg N hi' as split with one irrigation at flower initiation stage, 1 9 = 15 kg N hi' as basal and 15 kg N ha1 as split with one irrigation at flower initiation stage and ho = 20 kg N ha 1 as basal and 20 kg N ha 1 as split with one irrigation at flower initiation stage. N fertilization with irrigation management generally increased yield and yield components on chickpea. An application of 20 kg N ha 4 as basal and 20 kg N hi' as split application with one irrigation at flower initiation stage (55 DAS) of chickpea tended to produce better performance and gave higher yield. Plants grown without nitrogen fertilizer and irrigation (control) gave the lowest yield.

    STUDY ON PREVALANCE AND THERAPEUTIC MANAGEMENT OF ECTO PARASITES IN CATTLE AT KAUNIAUPAZILAIN RANGPUR DISTRICT

    The study was conducted to investigate the overall prevalence of ecto-parasites in cattle in relation with age, sex, breed and seasonal variation and the therapeutic effects of commercial drugs against tick, lice and mite. A total of 790 clinical cases were registered for the clinical diagnosis and therapeutic purposes at kaunia upazila veterinary hospital in rangpur district of Bangladesh for a period of one year from July, 2016 to June, 2017. Diagnosis was made on owner’s statement, general examination and clinical signs and response to treatment. The overall prevalence of ecto-parasites were 25.6% of which the highest prevalence was lice 12.78% tick 7.59% and mites 5.18% respectively. On the basis of age >3 years the highest prevalence of tick 9.1% and lice 15.86% was seen in above 3 years age group and mite 6.67% in 2 years to 3 years old. According to sex the highest prevalence of tick 8.5%, lice 14% and mite 5.5% was found in male then female tick 6.67%, lice 11.54% and mite 4.8%, animals and breed-wise 8.81% tick, 17.86% lice and 6.43% mite was recorded in indigenous cattle. In respect of season, the prevalence of tick 11.67%, lice 17.5% and mite 8.33% infestation were significantly (P<0.05) higher in summer season then rainy tick 4.91%, lice 9.06% and mite 3.34% and winter tick 6.67%, lice 12.28% and mite 4.21%. Statistical results of the study also showed that the parameters breed wise prevalence by lice had significant (P<0.05) effect but age, sex had no significant (P>0.05) effects on prevalence of tick, lice and mite infestation. Animals treated with different ecto-parasitic drugs showed significant (P<0.05) effects on their date of recovery. Subcutaneous injection of combined ivermectin and clorsulon (Amectin plus®) showed quick result of recovery than single ivermectin (Vermic®) S/C injection and Ivermectin pour-on therapy against tick, mite and lice.

    SURVEY ON RICE BLAST AND MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF MAGNAPORTHE ORYZAE ON DIFFERENT CULTURE MEDIA

    ABSTRACT Rice appears to be the most important food crop, accounting for a quarter of all calories consumed Rice blast is one of the most common significant obstacles to rice cultivation in any rice growing region of the world. Field survey on rice blast (Magnaporthe oryzae) was conducted in 30 field sites of Sonatola upazila belong to Bogura District during boro season 20192020. Blast incidence and severity ranged from 0-81.8% and 0-65% respectively. The highest blast severity was recorded in Basmoti rice field of Pakulla village under Pakulla Union. Twenty (20) isolates of Magnaporthe oryzae was identified and morphologically characterized on Water Agar (WA), Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), Potato Sucrose agar (PSA) and Oat Meal Agar (OMA). Radial mycelia growth rate of all isolates ranged from 5.5 to 22.5, 7.5 to 77.2, 5.5 to 61.5 and 7.5 to 72.5 in Water Agar (WA), Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), Potato Sucrose agar (PSA) and Oat Meal Agar (OMA) respectively. Most of the isolates were blackish white in color, rough cottony surface structured and irregular shaped. Mycelial growth of Magnaporthe oryzae isolates significantly varied on different culture media.
